Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.

4

In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.

Psalm 24, Domini est terra BCP-613

(Anglican Chant sung by the Choir) Joseph Barnby 1 The earth is the LORD'S and all that is in it, *

the world and all who dwell therein. 2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas *

and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. 3 "Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? *

and who can stand in his holy place?" 4 "Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, *

who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud.

5 They shall receive a blessing from the LORD * and a just reward from the God of their salvation."

6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

8 "Who is this King of glory?" * "The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle."

9 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

10 "Who is he, this King of glory?" * "The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory."

Revelation 21:1-6a

I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

"See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away."

And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end."

The Gospel (please stand) John 11:32-44

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice,

6

"Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

Post Communion Prayer BCP-365 Prayer for the Election of a Rector BCP-818

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing BCP-366 Recessional Hymn “Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones” H-618 Lasst Uns Erfreuen The Dismissal BCP-366 Organ Postlude Allegro (Concerto in B-flat Major) Johann Gottfried Walther It has long been the custom at St. John’s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. Today’s altar flowers are given by Joanne and Larry Owen to the Glory of God and in memory of their Mothers and Fathers.

Announcements

Music in the Liturgy: Today is All Saints Day! All the music used in the liturgy, including the hymns reflects or amplifies the themes of the lessons and prayers appointed for this day. The Choir will chant the Psalm for the Day, Psalm 24 in an Anglican Chant setting by Joseph Barnby (1838-1896), English composer, conductor, and organist (St. Andrew’s, London). Among his many compositions are 246 hymn tunes. The Offering Anthem is the final movement of Requiem, Opus 48 by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), an important French Romantic composer, organist (Eglise de la

8

Madelaine), and head of the Paris Conservatory. The Communion Motet is a setting by Healey Willan of an English translation of the ancient Latin Hymn, “O Sacrum Convivium”. Willan was an important and influential Canadian Church musician (Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Toronto). The Organ Prelude is a brief, quiet “Song of Peace” by Jean Langlais (1907-1991), a blind French composer, organist and improviser. This work has been described as music in space rather than time. The Vocal Prelude is the “Litany for All Souls” by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), a prolific Austrian composer, among the greatest of his time. He wrote a large number of solo songs, this being one of his most enduring of a Religious nature. It is sung this morning by Dr, Gwen Norton, Mazzo-soprano. The text and translation are printed below. The Organ Postlude is the opening movement of an Orchestral Concerto transcribed for organ by Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748), a German Baroque music theorist, composer and organist whose orchestral transcriptions served as a model for those of J. S, Bach, who was Walther’s cousin.

Litany for the Feast of All Souls Ruh'n in Frieden alle Seelen, Rest in peace, all souls Die vollbracht ein banges Quälen, who have had done with anxious torment, Die vollendet süßen Traum, who have had done with sweet dreams Lebenssatt, geboren kaum, who, sated with life and hardly born, Aus der Welt hinüberschieden: have departed from this world: Alle Seelen ruhn in Frieden! all souls rest in peace! Alle Geister, die, voll Klarheit, All the souls, who, full of clarity, Wurden Märtyrer der Wahrheit, became martyrs to Truth, Kämpften für das Heiligtum, struggling for sacred faith Suchten nicht der Marter Ruhm: but seeking not the martyr's crown: Alle die von hinnen schieden, all who have parted from here, Alle Seelen ruhn in Frieden! all souls rest in peace! Auch die keinen Frieden kannten, And those who knew no peace Aber Mut und Stärke sandten but still had courage and strength to give Über leichenvolles Feld on fields strewn with corpses In die halbentschlaf'ne Welt: in a world half asleep: Alle die von hinnen schieden, all who have parted from here, Alle Seelen ruhn in Frieden! all souls rest in peace

All Saints Day Evensong! This afternoon! St. John’s choir will offer a very special candle-lit Evensong on All Saints Day. Please plan to attend and invite your friends and neighbors. (Please practice your subtle evangelism!) We’ve already had a little publicity in the South Jersey Times, and you may have noticed the banner on our church fence. See the posters around the church for more details. It promises to be very inspiring. Great things are happening at St. John’s. Come and see, and spread the word. Handbell Ringers: Coming up, the St. John’s Handbell ringers will play two identical concerts on Saturday, December 5, at 1:00 & 2:15 PM during St. John’s open house in conjunction with the Salem City Yuletide Tour. They will also play Preludes for the Sunday, December 6 Holy Eucharist, and for the 10:30 PM Christmas Eve Festival Eucharist. Special Music Funds: The choir will sing two Evensongs and several special services during the 2015-2016 season. These special services require additional singers and instrumentalists who are not part of the annual budget. Please consider giving to either the Special Music Fund which covers these additional expenses for Easter Brass, Spring Strings, Evensong singers, etc., and/or the Special Organ Fund, which covers major organ repairs above and beyond the annual budget. Thank you for your generosity and support. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We are served 63 people this week and ran out of food before 1:30. November 11/3 Open; 11/10 Trudy O’Hare; 11/17 Sue Harker; Volunteers 11/24 Bonnie and Rick Holmstrom. The sign-up sheet for November is posted on the office door…please volunteer. St. John’s will have a Trunk or Treat here on Oct 31, 2015, as an outreach for the neighborhood children from 4-6 p.m. Deacon Sally needs as many CARS as possible; secondly, anyone who cannot participate is asked to bring candy to the Parish House.

10

It’s time for Operation Shoebox. Shoeboxes will be available for pick up after church today for this annual project. They can be filled with toys and hygienic products and returned by Nov 15. It only takes $20 to fill a box. Also monetary donations will be accepted. See Laurie Bailey for more information. St. John’s is looking for a few good servers! We need acolytes and chalicists to assist during the 10:30 Eucharist. Please contact David Miller (609-202-7197) or St. John's office (935-1798) for more information. Yoga Classes are now on Monday and Thursday nights from 5-6 p.m. in the Library; except on the third Monday of each month when the time is 5:30-6:30. We are sad to report the passing of Jim Paras. Please keep his wife, Elva, and his family and friends in your prayers. And also the passing of Charlotte Sweeney Ferguson. Please pray for her family and friends. May their souls, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.
