St John’s College Newsletter No. 23 12 August 2013 Dear Parents, Students, Staff, Friends and Carers, Yesterday we celebrated the Feast Day of Mary McKillop, our first Australian saint. As a woman in the nineteenth century, she had very definite views on how to offer real help to the poor and marginalised in our society. This brought her into conflict with the authorities of the day and it was only many years later that she was vindicated. The challenge that she leaves us in the twenty first century is to stand up for what we know to be right even when the authorities and those around us don’t agree. Of course, we must first ensure that our views have substance and are well researched and not merely self-delusional. Our young adults sometimes miss this stage and rebel merely as a reaction to tradition. Our community benefits most when we learn from the past, both its successes and its failures, and keep the positive aspects while making improvements to or disposing of what is no longer of benefit. This week the entire school has been kept on tender hooks by Mr Nan who will finally reveal who won the athletics carnival at assembly this morning. We at Banksia are ready to receive our trophy but there is a large dose of hope rather than confidence in that. The carnival last Friday ran exceptionally well and was a great community day for our students and staff. This will be followed up next week on 16 th when we celebrate St John’s Day. Love Gone Wilde opens tonight at the Nambour Civic Centre. I would urge all members of our community to support the students in this event. The students have put in many hours to hone this heavily adapted piece into a very funny and professional play. The staff and students have done all aspects of the production themselves and deserve to be congratulated on their outstanding final product. At the time of writing I believe the two evening shows have very few seats left but the matinee is still available. On Wednesday night we welcomed the Year 8 students of 2015 to the College for the first time. These students are currently in year 6 and will have their first day at the same time as our first year 7s. The early enrolments are necessary for us to plan all the adjustments that will have to be made to incorporate the 20% growth that we will have in that one year. We hope to conclude these enrolments by the end of this term. Hence, I would ask for your help in informing any families that you know of this early closing date. Most independent schools on the Sunshine Coast are following the same pattern with year 7 for 2015 being enrolled in March 2014. Where in the World is Mr Gold? No winners last week. Apparently, the Iberian Peninsula clue was just too obscure for people. This week there is Gold to be found in the birth place of St Francis, a small but very famous town north west of Rome. As a hint, St Francis is associated with Catherine of Sienna so it is not Sienna! Have a great week and say hello at the Theatre. Dave Cuskelly Unbind and Set Free

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, Friends and Carers, Yesterday we celebrated the Feast Day of Mary McKillop, our first Australian saint. As a woman in the nineteenth century, she had very definite views on how to offer real help to the poor and marginalised in our society. This brought her into conflict with the authorities of the day and it was only many years later that she was vindicated. From the Library desk…

All year 8 students have been advised that if they would like to represent St John’s in the interschool competition this year, they need to apply by next Thursday 15th August. The competition is in a quiz format and all books are paid for by our school library, so there are no additional costs for parents. Unfortunately, a team can only consist of four students and students have been given details of the event and guidelines, as to how to apply in writing. Library staff are looking forward to their responses.

The following is a re-post of a competition our 16+ year old budding writers might like to consider entering….

Gateway to Your Career

& Your Future Please note that as the Senior Pathways page of the school newsletter contains a lot of information and attachments, it has been decided that it will be sent as a separate email to all Year 10, 11 and 12 students and families.

We hope that this does not cause any inconvenience.
