Chamber Concerts 2016 — 2017Old Divinity School, St John’s College, Cambridge

Welcome to Kettle’s Yard’s 2016-2017 chamber series, housed in the historic setting of the Old Divinity School in St John’s College in the centre of Cambridge.

This year’s artist-in-residence is the award-winning violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen. Each of Tamsin’s four concerts conjures up distinctive and moving moments in history, from the contemplative world of J.S. Bach’s writing for solo violin to the emotionally-charged music of Messiaen and Shostakovich from the Second World War. Along the way, Tamsin gives us a snapshot of music across Europe in 1917, and folk-inspired Bohemia from before the First World War.

And the folk influences continue: quartets by Bartók and Dvorák sit alongside Haydn’s ‘Zingarese’ or Gypsy minuet (Tesla Quartet), while Ligeti and Bartók rub shoulders with wonderful music from Africa and beyond (Ligeti Quartet).

Further highlights include classics from the chamber music repertoire such as Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata (Boris Giltburg) and his ‘Archduke’ Trio (Busch Trio), and the ‘Dissonance’ Quartet by Mozart (Ruisi Quartet).

Getting hereThis series of concerts will be held at the Old Divinity School, St John’s College while Kettle’s Yard undergoes a major building project. The Old Divinity School is located directly opposite St John’s College. The entrance is off Trinity Street or All Saint’s Passage.
