Jesus understands our struggles through his own temptations in the desert. He did not know the end of the story; he only knew to overcome the delusions placed before him: possessions, power and prestige. Then, after his refusals, angels came in ministry to lighten the burdens of this encounter with the Evil One. It is the same with us. None of us gets to heaven with perfect scores in the battles with bad habits, lustful desires, screams of self over the needs of others. Life is hard and our temptations, real. But Lent promises hope of redemption and that, if we are victorious over these allurements, we will wear the crown of personal transformation. It is not easy to ignore when temptation rings our doorbell. But, with the grace flowing from the example of Jesus, we will neither answer the door nor invite temptation in to stay for dinner.
Sr. Bridget Haase, O.S.U. Living Faith, January, February, March 2017

“At that time Jesus was let by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.”

Pray the Liturgy of the Hours During Lent
Throughout the centuries, Christians have gathered at the be-ginning and the end of each day to pray the ancient words of the Psalms and to pray for the needs of the community and the world. Everyone is welcome to join their voices in this Prayer of the Church during Lent as we celebrate Morning Prayer on Sundays at 10:00am and Evening Prayer (Vespers) on Mondays at 5:30pm. Both liturgies will be held in the main
church in the Reservation Area.

Administration Commission: We will need to begin the process of locking and securing the Church at night. Need to discern new front doors with the University and members of the Parish. The new doors will need panic bars and match the existing exterior of the Church. We envision a committee to assist with this lengthy process This process will begin with reaching out to the University. Recommendations to Finance Council to release monies from building fund to assist with the new doors and the security of the Church. We also discussed how the building fund and possibly Omaha Gives annual appeal might improve the sound system with new speakers. Worship Commission: Discussed OMAHA GIVES project, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and Liturgical Ministry Day, 2017.
Community Life Commission: The commission has found a volunteer to help with RCIA hospitality. RCIA is still looking for a group of volunteers to assist and coor-dinate hospitality projects. Commission is looking into creating a calendar of parish events and responsibilities.
Faith Formation Commission: The Faith Formation Commission is preparing to reach out to each of the other four parish Commissions in order to gather information regarding ways parishioners can get involved and serve the parish through the various ministries offered at St. John's. Novena of Grace
A long standing Jesuit tradition in honor of St. Francis Xavier the great souled Missionary. The Novena is nine days March 4 to the 12. We will pray the Novena prayer within the Mass after the General Intercessions. The 12 noon daily Liturgy will be our Novena Mass . All are welcome to attend and partici-pate. The novena gives us an opportunity to pray for the Mis-sionary efforts of the Church during our Lenten season. The Novena is traditionally prayed from the 4th to the 12th of March, the last day commemorating when Francis and St.
Ignatius were declared saints in 1622.

New Hardbound Hymnals for St. John’s
The St. John’s pastoral staff, Liturgy Committee, and Finance Council are discerning moving back to a hardbound hymnal for our parish. They are considering sustainability and Laudato Si, as well as annual cost, when comparing our current disposable Breaking Bread missals to hardbound hymnals. A subcom-mittee of 17 people is considering sample hymnals from three major publishers (OCP, GIA, and WLP) for our community. Members of this subcommittee represent every musical ensemble, regular weekend Mass time, the Liturgy Committee, and the pastoral staff at St. John’s. We know you have questions! Before you ask… • All the sample hymnals fit into the pew pockets. • An annual St. John’s supplement would include our parish repertoire that is not in whichever hymnal is chosen. This would replace an estimated 4,050 seasonal worship guides per year, saving yet more paper. Song numbers would appear in the weekly newsletter. • Subscriptions to “Give Us This Day” would be available at a discount through the parish for those who wish to have the daily readings and antiphons for prayer. We have questions for you too! Please take a few minutes to give your input to the hymnal subcommittee as they discern a new resource for liturgical prayer in our community. Scan the QR code here, find it at the St. John's Parish Facebook page, or visit http://www.creighton.edu/ministry/campusministry/ws/musicministry/ to fill out the survey online. Paper copies of the survey are also available at the main entrance of the church. Please feel free to contact [email protected] with further questions.
Save the Date!! This month’s healing Mass is March 21 at 5:00 Liturgy. A light soup supper will be served directly after Mass for our healing to continue through our community gathering. All are welcome! No reservations are necessary!

Dear Saint John's Parish community: On behalf of the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice we
would like to thank you all for your donations to the Service and Justice Trip Program. This year the live and silent auction was extremely successful, and as a result, Creighton students will be able to receive the necessary financial aid needed to attend a trip during their fall and spring breaks. Your financial support and
constant prayers are so valuable to us. Once again thank you so much.
