1 St. John’s Episcopal Church – Canandaigua, New York THE EAGLE Volume 28, September/October 2015 Dear Friends: Having heard many wonderful things about St. Johns, and having had the privilege of meeting some of you over the years, I am looking forward to joining you beginning Monday, September 7, 2015, as part of my second year of supervised ministry field placement. For those of you whom I have not yet met, Father David has asked me to share a little about myself. Currently, I am a candidate in the ordination process in the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester and am in my senior year as a seminarian at Colgate Rochester Crozier Divinity School (CRCDS). A few weeks ago, I was delighted to learn that I was awarded the Jansje Dinkeloo Carey Scholarship - a scholarship that is granted based on academic perfor- mance and excellence in pastoral care. I am honored and humbled to be attending seminary my senior year on a full scholarship, especially one that is in recognition of performance in my first year of supervised ministry field placement at Christ Episcopal Church in Corning. Upon completion of my semi- nary course work in December, I will receive a Masters of Divinity from CRCDS and a diploma in Anglican Studies from Bexley-Seabury Federation. My background with regard to education and the church are long and varied. I am a graduate of Corning Community College and Mansfield University, and my professional career has been in Human Resource Management. I served for ten years in the Human Resources Department at Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, and for over six years as Executive Director of Human Resources at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls. I left Schuyler Hospital in January 2014 to attend seminary full-time. I am a 42-year resident of Addison, NY and a 23-year member of Church of the Redeemer Episcopal Church in Addison. At Redeemer, I have filled many roles, including warden, lay Eucharistic visitor and delegate to convention. Among other things, I am also a business owner. My spouse, Kevin Hillman, and I own and operate Frans Landing, a restaurant in Painted Post, NY. One of my favorite parts of owning the restaurant is the outreach program we have been able to establish through it. The program is called, ACT-N-DO,which stands for Addison Community Thanksgiving Dinner Outreach. On Thanksgiving Day - with the help of volunteers from local churches, schools, and business- es - we prepare and deliver Thanksgiving Dinner to the elderly, disabled and those in need. All food is prepared at the restaurant by local volunteers. Last year, we delivered over 435 free Thanksgiving meals throughout a 175-mile area and beyond. In 2013, our program expanded to include an outreach at Christmas. ACT-N-DOnow also provides toys and other items at Christmas time to children in need. In 2014, we served over 200 children. Kevins dream has always been to own a restaurant and mine has been to become an Episcopal priest. With Gods help and the help of each other, both of our dreams are coming true. LETTER FROM TROY PRESTON

(Continued from page one) Beginning in September, I will spend six weeks assisting with parish work at St. John’s under the supervision of Father David. My work with your parish will be about ten hours a week, and the balance of my week will be spent on class work in Rochester. I am truly looking forward to our time together worshiping and proclaiming God’s love for all of God’s children. I know it will be a rich, rewarding, and enjoyable experience. In Christ, Troy Preston

THE REVEREND BARBARA HUMPHREY

SEPTEMBER 7, 1929 - JULY 8, 2015

It was with great sadness that members of St. John’s said farewell to the Reverend Barbara Humphrey, retired priest associate with us for over twenty years. We offer loving condolences to her husband of 65 years, Paul Humphrey; children Margaret (Paul) Watkins of Wisconsin; Douglas (Tracy) Humphrey of Fairport; Catherine (Dan) White-Barber of Honeoye; nine grand-children; eight great-grandchildren; brother John (Sally) Myers of Delaware. She was prede-ceased by grandson Austin White. Among the devoted friends who will always miss her are those who faithfully attended her week-ly “Simple Presence” sessions of meditation.

THANK YOU, DENNIS!

At the 10:00 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist on Sunday, September 20, 2015, please join in the celebration of our Music Director Dennis Maxfield’s Twentieth Anniversary with us. Gifted and dedicated, Dennis not only maintains a high standard of choral performance but also on occa-sion shares with us his rich bass-baritone voice. Our celebration will continue after the service with a reception for Dennis and Jennifer (who has assisted the soprano section occasionally); their son Justin and daughter-in-law Karen and grandchildren William and Alyssa; daughter Kristen (who has also made soprano contributions) and her fiancé Robert Olson; and father-in-law Wilfred Squirrell.

ONANDA

This year our Onanda picnic comes of age: twenty-one years! On Sunday, September 13, come and celebrate Holy Eucharist on the shore of Canandaigua Lake at 10:00 a.m. Included in the service will be the induction of two Rite-13 candidates: Phoebe Durham and Emily Griffin. In the meantime our talented outdoor chefs will be working on hamburgs and hot dogs to be en-joyed with all the wonderful salads, casseroles, and desserts that the rest of us bring! Also please bring your own lawn chairs and place settings. Admission is $5 per person with a maxi-mum of $15 per family. Start looking for the sign-up sheet right now!!

DIOCESAN CONVENTION 2015

The Diocese of Rochester will hold its annual convention on Friday evening, November 13, and on Saturday, November 14, at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

LOOKING AHEAD - NOVEMBER 2015

UTO INGATHERING - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2015

Those BLUE BOXES will have a little more time to accumulate our coins and prayers of Thanks-giving for our GOD in our daily lives. This will be in time for the Ingathering that will take place at our Diocesan Convention on November 14. Please remember to count your coins, turn into dollars, or write a check and place in the enve-lopes that are available at the back of the church, and will be in the bulletin that Sunday. If you are not a Blue Box user, but support the work of this Outreach Ministry, follow the directions for preparing a check. Checks should be made payable to St. John’s Episcopal Church, and UTO should be written on the ‘for’ line. NOTE: I will be out west on this special day at St. John’s, but I’ll be on duty that day. Hopeful-ly, there will soon be material available regarding the outstanding Ingathering that took place this past summer at the General Convention. I will see that when it is available it is shared with you. Elizabeth (Betty) Phillips, UTO Coordinator

HELLO!

WHO

HOW ARE YOU?

Carol and Harvey Simmons recently moved to Canan-daigua from Rush, NY where they lived for thirty-five years. They currently reside at 321 Ferris Hills at West Lake. They have two adult sons; William and grandson Daniel live in Florida and David and grandsons Carver and Sebastian live in California. Carol was born in New Jersey and moved as a youth with her mother, father, and younger brother to a small farm in Vermont. As a result of her father’s sudden death, the family moved to Granville, NY where she was valedictorian of her high school class. Harvey was born and raised in the small village of Scotia, NY with his three sisters, mother, and father. Harvey met Carol in Trinity Church in Potsdam, NY where they both attended college. Harvey at Clarkson College of Technology and Carol at SUNY Potsdam College. They were married in Trinity Church in Granville in 1958. They relocated to Monroe County which was their home base for the next fifty-six years. For the past thirty-five years they were members of St. John’s Church in Honeoye Falls, NY. Harvey worked for General Dynamics and Xerox until 1997. His work assignments called for temporary living in Mississippi, West Germany, and North Scituate, Mass. Carol was an ele-mentary school librarian in the Pittsford Central School System for twenty-five years until her retirement in 1995.

NAME TAGS

Permanent name tags can be ordered any time! If you are a newcomer or missed filling out an application, please pick up an order form (available at the back of the church) and submit it to the church office together with a payment of $5.50 per person for clip-on or $6.50 for magnetic tags. When you receive your new name tag, please be sure to wear it when-ever you attend a church service or other event. This is very helpful to the clergy as well as others who may not recognize you or know you or who may momentarily draw a blank about your name.

COUNTERS NEEDED!

Some of our counters have recently retired or plan to retire in the not-too-distant future, so we are recruiting! As you probably observed, the Sunday offering is usually counted immediately after church, although Monday morning is a satisfactory alternative. Counting is done by six teams of two, so each team counts once every six weeks in rotation. The information is recorded on formatted pages which are easily understood and are passed along to Melva Brady, our Financial Administrator. The money is locked up when the counters finish. If you would like to volunteer for this basic and essential responsibility, or if you would like fur-ther information, please call Pat Perkins at (585) 374-2976.

RED WAGON PANTRY

A ministry separate from Gleaners Community Kitchen, the Red Wagon Pantry is supported en-tirely by donations from individuals, churches, and occasionally grocery stores. Twice a month canned goods and dried foods are given away, no questions asked. So far in 2015 St. John’s has given away 736 bags of food. Current needs include the following items:

Small cans of mixed vegetables, peas, carrots, green beans small cans of soup, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, tuna fish, V-8 juice, tomato juice small jars of peanut butter, jelly, jam macaroni-and-cheese mix juice pouches cake mix and frosting mix small packets of cookies small boxes of cereal

Donations may be left in the church office or look for the red wagon at the back of the church .

Will the kind friend who shared her family silver with Pat Perkins at the Kershaw picnic please call Pat at 374-2976? The loan was greatly appreciated.
