Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last Monday, I was privileged to be part of a Mass of Institution of Acolyte for Jim Detura and his 34 classmates who are preparing to become permanent deacons a little over a year from now. As an instituted acolyte, Jim becomes an Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist, as differentiated from our many lay people who are considered Special or Extraordinary Ministers. While functionally it would appear the same, he is entitled to wear the white alb when he distributes the Eucharist, as a sign of his status and call to serve. Continue to pray for him and his family as he continues his formation.

+++ Thank you to all who have made and continue to make their pledges to the 2010 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As of March 1st, our pledge total has risen to $165,449.50, which is 72% of our stretch goal of $228,629.50. If you have not done so, please remember to return your completed pledge envelope either in the collection basket or bring it to the rectory office, or return it in the mail directly to the Archdiocese. I count on every family to participate in some way this year, to help us meet or exceed our stretch goal once again. Your support of this appeal is part of your sacrificial tithe. Together, let us continue to make a difference in our archdiocese and in our parish!

+++ Men of our parish are invited to our Archdiocesan Catholic Men’s Conference, entitled “Champions of Faith,” next Saturday, March 13th, at Seton Hall University. The conference is based on the principle: “As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Man Sharpens Another.” It will focus on bringing men together to form a brotherhood that goes beyond the conference, and helps you strengthen your faith, your family and an identity as a disciple of Jesus Christ. More than 2,000 men attended last year to hear some of the most dynamic Catholic speakers in the country share the truth of the Gospel and call all men to live out their faith with courage and holy boldness! Fathers are encouraged to bring their older teenage and young adult sons for a life changing experience for you both! The day runs from 8am to 5pm. For more information on the men’s conference, or to register, go to www.rcan.org/menscommission or call 973-497-4545. The women’s conference, entitled, “Hail the Cross Our Only Hope,” will be on Saturday, March 20th, also at Seton Hall. It will reflect on “Embracing the Cross with St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein).” Speakers include EWTN’s Colleen Carroll Campbell, who will address the topic, “The Feminine Genius: A Call to Love,” and Seton Hall University’s Dr. Dianne Traflet, who will discuss “The Way of the Cross with Edith Stein.” Mothers are encouraged to bring their older teenage and young adult daughters. The day begins at 9:30am and concludes at 4:30pm. To register online or to print and mail registration, go to www.rcan.org/womcom or call 973-497-4008 for more information.

+++ The Catholic Bishops of the United States are asking us to contact our legislators to encourage passage of comprehensive immigration reform in our country. Preprinted postcards are available at the doors of the church for you to sign, one for each senator and one for your representative, along with another card if you wish more information. The bishops are not asking for amnesty for the undocumented, but rather a systematic program of fines and penalties that would allow those who have committed no other crime to work toward legal permanent residency. The bishops’ position is based on the dignity of every human person as a child of God, the proper protection of our country and its borders, and asking Congress to seek ways to assist other countries to make conditions such that people would choose to stay in their own lands rather than emigrate from them to find a better quality of life for themselves and their families. If you place the completed cards in the boxes at the church doors, we will mail them for you, or you can take them home and mail them yourselves. The revised deadline is March 21st. Those who may have a different approach than the bishops propose are encouraged to express their opinions to their senators and representative, too, contacting them personally by letter, email, or telephone.
