Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I know many of you join with me in mourning the death of Joseph V. Gangemi, Jr., one of our Parish Trustees, Lector, and Eucharistic Minister. Joe was someone you could always count on not only to offer sage advice but also to get things done in his unassuming but effective way. Chairman of our Parish Carnival for many years, he will be missed this year especially, although he had already made arrangements with others to carry on this important fundraiser, set for next month. Together let’s dedicate this year’s Carnival to Joe, which will offer with it some logistical challenges as additional parking needs for the expanded DelloRusso building granted by our mutual easement will confine the rides, booths and attractions to our side of the wall. (On the other hand, at least there will be some parking for the Carnival!) In addition, we are planning to vary our food varieties and locations, so all can sample the multiethnic delicacies of all our major parish nationalities. Anyone willing to donate a food item should speak with Lou Agnese, Daisy Enriquez, or Fernando Vargas, or leave a message at the rectory. Volunteer sign-up weekends for the various booths and ticket areas will be Aug. 29-30 and Sept. 12-13.

+++ Our annual instructional—formational series of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults will begin once again in October. This is offered for unbaptized adults or adults baptized in another Christian denomination who wish to enter the Catholic Church. It is also available for those baptized as Catholics who did not later receive Communion and/or Confirmation. Our group meets weekly on Sunday mornings. Sessions are offered in English and in Spanish. To inquire more about this, adults 18 and above are asked to be in touch with Deacon Jim for the English sessions and Fr. Jonathan for the Spanish sessions.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In the Old Testament, “wisdom” refers not simply to an intellectual attainment—the acquiring of knowledge—but to a life lived in accord with God’s will for human beings. The figure of “Lady Wisdom” depicts this sort of life as supremely attractive and supremely rewarding. Here, she offers a rich banquet to those who would answer her invitation. To share in the feast of Lady Wisdom is to learn how to live wisely. We find the same idea reflected in the Letter to the Ephesians, who are exhorted to live “not as foolish persons but as wise.” Echoes of Wisdom’s invitation to her feast might be heard in the command to “not get drunk on wine...but be filled with the Spirit.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus—God’s Word made flesh—assumes the role of Lady Wisdom, also calling all who would be wise to a feast. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” For Christians, the Eucharist is Wisdom’s feast, where we learn to forsake the foolishness of trying to live without God. We listen to God’s wisdom proclaimed in scripture, and then we receive as food the flesh and blood of God’s Word so that we might advance in the way of understanding. In thinking about the Eucharist as Wisdom’s feast, we must remember that wisdom is not the same thing as information. Today we have lots of information, but perhaps not so much wisdom. In the Eucharist we do not acquire new information about God, but we draw the reality of God within ourselves so that we might begin to live in a new way—that way of living that Jesus calls “eternal life.” “Jesus, you are the Word and Wisdom of God. May our sharing in the banquet of your love give us hearts that are open to you and lips that will proclaim your good news. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise…” Ephesians 5: 15

A wise person recognizes that all we have comes from God. A wise person thanks God every day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and He wants us to be partners with Him in His work here on earth.
