FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! A classmate of mine is getting ready to take a sabbatical. At this point in my priesthood I do not feel inclined to take a three month hiatus (being away 6 weeks for hip surgery was hard enough – believe it or not, I really missed you). But if someday I do decide to take a sabbatical I have some things I’d really like to do before my time on this planet is up. Not that you care, but here’s my “bucket list” of things I’d like to accomplish before God calls me home. First up is to visit all 50 states – I’m still missing Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Delaware. Of those remaining states, I most want to see Alaska, as the book Into the Wild (also made into a movie) really impacted me. Another item on my list is to take the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Vladivostok. I love Russian literature (especially Dostoevsky and Solzhenitsyn) and would love to see Lake Baikal. Before going I’d have to at least learn how to read the Cyrillic alphabet. Speaking of foreign languages, my Spanish skills are slowly improving, which would make possible my goal of driving from Wisconsin to Tierra del Fuego, Chile. That would allow me to see much of Mexico, Central America, and the vastness of South America while travelling the Pan-American highway. At the end I’d find a needy community and donate my car before flying home. I actually have a friend who has this on his list so God-willing, we might pull this one off someday. Now it occurs to me that my Mom might be reading this article – don’t worry, Mom, I won’t tell you about these trips until after I return home safely! Another goal of mine is to climb to the top of a 14,000 foot peak. In 2009 I did some hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park and we climbed to the top of a 12,000 foot peak. That was tough but I absolutely loved it and now that I have a new hip, I would love to scale at least one of Colorado’s more than 50 “14ers” (their nickname for peaks exceeding 14,000 feet). I have my eyes on Longs Peak because it can be scaled in one day and does not require any technical skill. Given my age and limited exercise, the window is closing on this one and I don’t know if I’ll be fit enough in 10 years to pull it off (Father Burish thinks I’m not fit enough right now to get the top of Rib Mountain). For those of you still reading this far-fetched list of earthly goals, one other that might be the most feasible is to walk part of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. If you don’t know much about this pilgrimage route, I’d suggest watching the movie “The Way”. It’s a very good depiction of the what and why of the Camino, though there is the disappointing treatment of a person’s cremated remains (Catholic teaching requires that we bury our dead in a cemetery and not keep our loved ones with us in an urn). The traditional Camino pilgrimage is 500 miles in length and generally takes at least a month. However, one can still earn the official badge of completion by walking about 60 miles and it’s this prospect that I’m considering. There are some folks in the parish who would really like to organize this and I’m praying that God will show us when and how. In the meantime, you now know how I would spend my sabbatical if ever I felt led by the Holy Spirit to take one. If you didn’t think I was crazy before, maybe you’re convinced now! God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Praise for the Parish Pull! Please join me in thanking God for the perfect weather He provided that allowed us to host just over 3,000 eager pulling fans on Friday, July 10th. I'm so grateful for all the volunteers: you were heroic in your generous and joyful spirit of service! We simply could not have done it without each of you and I am certain that you have stored up some pretty impressive treasure in Heaven. For the 3rd year in a row we're indebted to the Knights of Columbus for their sponsorship - working with the Knights has been a true experience of fraternity. In case you're wondering, it looks like we cleared $35,000.00 of which we're happy to be sending $10,000.00 to support Columbus High School’s Chapel renovation. Our committee approved sending $25,000.00 to Tanzania to help Sister Sabina and her order continue building a new convent, which is now moving into the last phase. On a sad note, I was defeated by the young upstart Father Kuhn. After capturing the gold medal a year ago I had a tremendous advantage in the number of fans who were cheering for me: to be precise, I had around 3,000 fans while Father Kuhn had a measly 10 – yes, you guessed it, members of the previously mentioned Notorious Neillsville Knuckleheads. I’m sorry to my very devoted fans (and numerous – did I mention that I had a lot of fans?!). Thank God next year Father Kuhn will be moving on and I’ll be requesting a less-competitive priest; I am not the most gracious loser. In all seriousness now, may God bless you, people of St. John's, for pulling off something that was fun for many people! Christ the King/St. John’s welcomes Father Eric A-Dadson! Father Eric comes to us from Ghana (West Africa) and will be with us for a short stay as he makes proximate preparations to serve as a pastor in our diocese. Father was ordained a priest on July 22nd, 1990, meaning that he’ll be celebrating his silver anniversary while in our midst. Father Eric has a PhD in pastoral counseling from Fordham University (New York City) and has served in many capacities in his own diocese, including Vicar General. Please greet Father Eric and make him feel welcome as he transitions into parish life in Wisconsin! Church Etiquette: For the good of the order, please be conscientious about noise in church. As a priest, I have a pretty high threshhold for noise during Mass. The exception is during the homily. I'm asking parents to be particularly attentive to crying babies at that time, because that is a part of Mass that hearing well is essential to receiving the message. We can follow along during other parts of the Mass, but the homily is a time when we need a higher degree of silence. If your baby/toddler is fussing, please take him/her out or consider taking up residence in our cry room. Keep in mind that the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass is unofficially our “family” Mass, which means it’s a little more lively than other Masses. I’m grateful to God that we have such a young parish with so many heroic parents bringing their children to Mass. Please take this as a gentle reminder so that we can find a greater balance between youthful exuberance and silent contemplation!

SECULAR FRANCISCANS Have you ever felt a call for a deeper meaning in your life? Do you desire a closer relationship with Christ? Do you feel a need to simplify your life? We invite you to come and join us to share / learn / explore the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS). Who are Secular Fanciscans? We are Catholic men and women who seek to pattern our lives after Christ, striving to live the gospel way of life in the footsteps of St. Francis and Clare of Assisi. As individuals and as Christians, we believe we have all been called to strive together toward a vocation of sacrifice and communion with all people. This is our way of life. We are not a club or society. We are united in an international Order founded by St. Francis over 750 years ago. You are invited to learn more about whether you are called to the Secular Franciscan order by attending a chapter meeting on July 28th or August 25th at St. Anthony’s Spiritual Center in Marathon at 7:00pm. If you have questions, please contact Monte Willkom at 715-384-9205 or Richard Hoffman at 715-207-5409.
