PASTOR’S CORNER - Fr. Bernardin Mugabo

Masses for the Week of March 5 to 10

During Lent there will be an additional Mass at 5:30 p.m., Monday—Friday

Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 I, the L , am your God . . .You shall not have other gods besides me. — Exodus 20:2a, 3

LENTEN TIME IS A TIME OF RECONCILIATION: “if you forgive sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20: 19-23) These are the words of Jesus Christ himself talking about the importance of the Sacrament of reconciliation. The book of Sister Faustina Kowalska talked about the Divine Mercy we receive in the Sacrament of reconciliation. Dear parishioners, we Catholics are very blessed indeed to have this sacrament. What good news to hear that your sins are forgiven, your guilt is taken away, you can have a new beginning! The church asks us to go to confession at least once a year. The Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje made the reconciliation one of the 5 stones.( pray with the heart/ the rosary, The Eucharist, Holy Bible, Fasting, and monthly confession.), as you see Our heavenly Mother asks us to go to confession at least once a month. While the church asks us to confess our sins at least once a year, I believe that Mary knows what we need. Remember Jesus said; be holy as your heavenly Father is Holy. Since none of us knows the day nor the hour, we should do our best to be holy all the time by means of going to confession often. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5:7) Having our sins forgiven is not enough. We are to forgive all those who sinned against us. The Our Father also called the Prayer Jesus taught us says, “Forgive us our trespasses as we too forgive those who trespass against us.” To make it even more clear Jesus said, “Unless you forgive your neighbor from your heart, you will never be forgiven.” Dear parishioners, Jesus calls us to forgive and to ask forgiveness no matter how much we have done wrong or people have wronged us. In life, captivity often results in the freedom and uplifting of the soul. For example, Nelson Mandela in South Africa and Mahatma Gandhi in India, once set free, they became leaders and highly appreciated by their citizens. But most prisoners of sin are more pitiable than those in earthly prison because they are not aware that they are imprisoned by their depravity, and thus they do not even ask for freedom. The blindness of the soul, with its darkness, is more pitiable than anyone in a dark prison. We had a deanery meeting at Our Lady of Lourdes. Among the subjects we debated was the Lenten penance service. Here they are so that if for any reason you can’t be here, you may make it to another parish. ….continued next column….

Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. is Eucharistic Adoration: We can get so busy that we don’t take time to sit down and think a while, pray. Choosing a special time to visit the Chapel on Wednes-day or Friday is a perfect way to let go of all our busy nervousness and rest with Him without distractions.

[email protected]

SJE Senior Group will be meeting March 15. All seniors are invited (men & women). Call Lu at 729-1934 for more information. We hope to see you there!

YOUTH MINISTRY - Join us EVERY Sunday at 6 p.m. in St. Catherine Room next to St. James Hall. For more information, contact Maria Victoria Liranzo at [email protected] or (916) 529-5767.

REMINDER! Our weekly counters are asking if you could be more diligent about writing the amount of your donation on your envelopes. They would appreciate it!

SVdP - Last year’s “Kids for Cans” fundraiser did not yield as much canned food as in the past. Usually, this drive keeps the food locker supplied with canned foods for the year thus eliminating the need for donation requests of such items. But as we begin to run low on these goods, they will be added to our list of donation requests. Just so happens that in addition to this week’s need for spaghetti sauce, cereal, jelly, all in one canned meals (like ravioli, beef stew) we are asking for canned corn. Whatever you can do will help our efforts to feed the needy of our community. Thank you all for helping us with food donations and keeping us supplied with paper bags. We appreciate your kindness.

SJE School News - See’s Candies Fundraising – Students are selling See’s Candies for Easter. Order forms and envelopes are available in the narthex. Orders can be turned in at the office before Thursday, March 15th. Orders will be available for pick-up March 26-29th. School Stations of the Cross – The school will be attending Stations of the Cross every Wednesday during Lent. Parishioners are welcome to join us at 2 p.m. Student Sponsors – It costs more than $6,000 per year to educate a Catholic school student. Consider sponsoring a SJE student for a year, a month, a week or even a day. Your scholarship gift can be designated for a student in a specific grade and/or a activity of your choice. You can receive a general description of the student and updates on academic progress. Many also choose to name a scholarship gift in honor/memory of a loved one or a former teacher. This is a meaningful way to honor a special person over a period of time or as a permanent legacy. Contact the Principal, Christie Horton, at [email protected] or 916.481.8841 with any and all questions regarding becoming a Student Sponsor. Now Enrolling – Our school is accepting applications for PreSchool-8th for the 2018/19 school year. Schedule a tour! Email [email protected] .

Pope Francis’ March intention: “That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels.”

Remembering Fr. John M. Lagomarsino, SSC: “O loving God, we send your son home to you, home to a place of everlasting love, to join there with the angel choirs and blessed saints and to behold your glorious holy face. O loving God, have mercy and forgiveness upon your servant’s now departed soul and may your grace and love enfold him evermore so he may dwell in paradise at last. Receive his soul and let eternal light shine, eternal light forever on his soul, so he may be forever in your dwelling place and be at rest in peace until we meet him there.” BB Book # 682.
