A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKThe first reading this Sunday is from the Book of Maccabees.  We rarely hear about this Jewish Book of the Old Testament, in fact, found in the Catholic Bible but not many Protestant Bibles.  It has to do with the Catholic emphasis on the resurrection of the dead and appropriateness of praying for the dead. About 175 years before Jesus was born, many Jews gave into the conquest of the Syrian king who desecrated the Temple and seduced their religious beliefs.  Terrible affliction was placed upon Israel.  Our reading, today, detailed the sufferings and deaths of a certain family who died for their faith instead of violating God’s law.  From them we hear of their acceptance of death assured that they will receive eternal life at the resurrection.  This belief reflects the tone of the entire Book of Maccabees where the faithful died awaiting God’s recompense at their resurrection.  This Book also advocated prayers for the dead.     The Book of Maccabees exemplifies the belief in eternal life long before Jesus was born.  That is the reason for the complicated scenario posed in today’s Gospel.  The Sadducees did not believe in resurrection while the Pharisees did believe in the hereafter.  Jesus is precise that there is a resurrection of the dead for those who lived for the Lord.  That is what we believe and why we pray for those who have died in hope that they be united to God in His mercy.  During our lives we approach the Lord seeking healing for the results of our sins.  When our lives on earth have ended we depend on the prayers of those still living to continue to ask God to heal the results of sin in our lives. This is the month of All Souls.  We honor our dead by praying for them.  Separated by time and space, remarkably we can assist them in their final journey to heaven by lifting them up by the power of prayer.  They need us.

Eternal Rest grant unto them , O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

We salute all veterans this weekend.  We thank them for their service to our Country and pray that they be blessed.  Their sacrifices allow us, and our brothers and sisters throughout the world, to enjoy our freedoms.  From all of us…..Thank You!

From Your Friends at Outreach: As you may know, every year we provide a Thanksgiving Meal for those in need in our area. It is the ongoing generosity of our St. John the Beloved parishioners who make this possible.

Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed on Saturday, November 23, 2019. To complete each meal, we are asking for donations of chickens, hams, and turkeys. Medium or large chickens and hams are especially good choices for many of our families. If you qualify to receive a free chicken, turkey, or ham through a program at your supermarket, perhaps you might consider paying it forward to Outreach. Pease bring all meat donations direct to the Outreach Office located at Community of Christ Church (M, W, or F, 9-11 a.m.), or to the Vianney House (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.).

Other needed items include canned vegetables, gravy, canned fruit, boxed potatoes, canned yams, or sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea, cake mixes, frostings, and aluminum roasting pans.

As always, thank you, for your generosity.  Deadline for donations is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH. If you have questions, please call the Outreach Office at (302)994-7867.

Bless you!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FORMATION

SAINT JOHN THE BELOVED SCHOOL NEWS

St John the Beloved Parish invites all students to receive their Faith Formation through our parish RE program. Click here for more information about religious education formation at St John the Beloved Parish and to register your child / grandchild to attend our Tuesday evening program.

During the month of October as a school, we celebrate Mary and the Rosary. The third grade prepares for this special time in the church by creating their own rosary with their family. The rosaries are then brought in and taken on a journey to say the rosary with Bishop Malooly and other classes from around the diocese. The celebration of the rosary takes place at Holy Spirit Church in New Castle where Bishop Malooly blessed their rosaries. Throughout the year, the third graders will be using these special rosaries.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Book Fair to Benefit St. John the Beloved School Library. All parishioners are encouraged to support the St. John the Beloved School Library through the annual book fair. This year’s event will be held at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Christiana Mall on Route 1 & 7. The book fair will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Children’s author Brian Biggs will share one of his stories to entertain the children at 5:00 p.m. Mr. Hart will read a story for the children at 6:00 p.m. The school band will also perform at the book fair at 7:00 p.m. Free gift wrapping will be available all day. SJB families, friends and parishioners can support the library by simply coming to the bookstore during these hours, making their selection of store merchandise (including café items) and be sure to mention that your purchase is to benefit St. John the Beloved Library when you check-out. The store will automatically credit a portion of each purchase to the school library only if you identify yourself as being a St. John the Beloved family. Online ordering is available this year from 11/13/19-11/24/19. Use book fair ID number 12559449 if ordering online for SJB Library to benefit. This is a great opportunity to get a jump on your Christmas shopping while benefiting the school library. If there are any questions about the book fair, please call Valerie Oldiges at 998-5525 Extension 207. We look forward to seeing you at the book fair, and thank you for your continuing support.

God Bless Our Newly Baptized : Michael Sean Swoyer, Jr.,

Quinn Carmela Foster, Riley Charlotte Rivituso, Brynn Kathleen Schulak

May our little ones who were baptized be blessed by our parishioners' prayers and good works, and may they continue to grow in their love for God.

Marriage Moments: As certain as death is, are we ever really ready to die? This may not be a happy conversation to have with one's beloved, but periodically we should share what would help each of us to be ready. By Susan Vogt www.SusanVogt.netParenting Pointers: Whose job is it - to make a meal? feed the pet?, clean up a room? make peace when two people disagree? Why not trade jobs in the family for a day. Be creative or humorous.

Our God is a God of the living not of the dead. Have you had an experience of this living God and want to share it with others? You may be called to the priesthood or religious life. If you think God is calling you to be a priest, religious or deacon, contact Fr. Norm Carroll [email protected] 302-573-3113 [email protected]

That those who live in celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of God as priests, deacons, sisters and brothers, will be blessed on earth for their witness to the resurrection of the body in the life to come, we pray to the Lord. Amen

The Bishop celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation each year for those adults who have not yet completed their initiation. The date for this celebration this year is: in Spanish Sunday, December 15, 2019 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Church. This celebration is for those over the age of 18 who have already been baptized and received their first Communion. It is the Pastor’s responsibility to ensure these individuals have been properly catechized for the reception of this Sacrament. It is also the Pastor’s responsibility to ensure that the proposed Sponsor meets all the requirements found in canon 874 of the Code of Canon Law. Please note that if an adult (anyone over the age of 7) is being baptized or received into the Catholic Church, the priest who baptizes or receives is also to confirm the person at the same celebration. Those who are being baptized or received into the Church at the Easter Vigil (or throughout the year) should not be made to wait to be confirmed. Anyone wishing to receive the sacrament is asked to contact the Religious Education Department via this email: [email protected].

November 10, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our annual “Season of Giving” program starts this weekend! You will find the lovely Giving Quilt (that Fr. Lewis and friends quilted) located in the back of St. John the Beloved Church. In the pockets are cards that contain families that need to be adopted. Every card is marked with the number of children in the family and their present request. Each child in the household will receive 2 wrapped presents (an item of clothing and a toy, book, or game) and the parents receive a gift card ($25 or more).

Please take a card and follow the instructions on the back to register your family (required). We encourage everyone to consider partnering with another family, a team at work, sports teams, etc to make it easier to take care of our needy families. We have more than 40 families to be adopted.

Please note: we are not soliciting, or accepting any individually wrapped presents. If adopting a family is out of your reach, we still need your food donations to provide meals for our families. We are also happy to accept a monetary donation to help offset the costs of running these programs. Please call the Outreach office with any questions.

It’s the ongoing generosity of the people of St. John the Beloved that makes all of this possible and we (and the people we serve) are humbly grateful for your support.Thank you and God Bless you.

Thanksgiving Day Is Coming!

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, and you will soon be saying, “Pass me the mashed potatoes, please.” This November holiday has its roots in American history and has grown into a day where we remember all the things for which we are thankful: country, family, friends, health, etc. Unfortunately, we can find ourselves so caught up with travel plans and buying the perfect turkey or ham that we let the day pass us by, and all we can focus on is how much we ate and who won the day’s football games. That’s why it is time NOW to begin reflecting daily of all things, great and small, that we are thankful for in life.

Gratitude is a key characteristic of a good Everyday Steward, but it does not develop in us without effort. In the coming days, we can contemplate all those things God has given us. If it helps, we can create a written list and bring it with us to the Thanksgiving dinner table. The point is that too often we take so many gifts for granted, and unless we pause and purposely reflect, we miss the chance to give thanks. A healthy and hearty heart filled with gratitude can make the highs in life that much higher and the lows easier to bear. Increased gratitude will also bring us closer to the source of all those good gifts, our God.

So, what will Thanksgiving be like for you this year? You have some time to make it something more than it has been in the past. The choice is yours. — Tracy Earl Welliver ©LPi

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Our God is a God of the living. In God, there is no death. While life certainly presents hardships and has its measure of suffering, God does not promise anyone, not even his own Son, a way around it. What He does promise is His abiding, all-sustaining presence as a source of courage and hope so that we can more gracefully and purposefully endure it. Our faith in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ reminds us to carry the hope of resurrection with us in all things. We must never lose sight of the fact that we are works in progress and that what we see and experience here is only the beginning of greater marvels to come. This is why people like St. Paul

and others of great faith consider their sufferings as nothing compared to the glory yet to be revealed. LPi
