THE Sacrament of Reconciliation and the season of Lent The faithful should be clearly and positively encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance during Lent. Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Baptism and to prepare and support

Liturgy Corner Compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home with The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Today’s first reading recalls an important “forty” story. For forty days it rained! When Noah and his family were finally able to return to land God established a new, everlasting covenant with humanity that was signified by a rainbow in the clouds. This is the most powerful moment in the story of Noah. On the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading in each Lectionary cycle is about Jesus’ temptation in the desert. Compared to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the details throughout Mark’s narrative are sparse. This is evident in Mark’s account of Jesus’ temptation in the de-sert. Mark tells us only that Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he was tempted by Sa-tan. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted while in the desert, that Satan presented him with three temptations, and that Jesus refused each one, quot-ing Scripture. Only the Gospels of Matthew and Mark re-port that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of his time in the desert. The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years that the Isra-elites wandered in the desert after being led from slavery in Egypt. The prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert for 40 days and nights, making his way to Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was also attended to by an angel of the Lord. The number 40 appears in dozens of places in the Bible, usually signifying a test that has been administered and passed. Remembering the significance of these events, we also set aside 40 days for the season of Lent. In Mark’s Gospel, the desert marks beginning of Jesus’ battle with Satan; the ultimate test will be in Jesus’ final hours on the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten ob-servances are only a beginning, a preparation for and a reinforcement of our ongoing struggle to resist the tempta-tions we face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of Baptism in which we promised to reject sin and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was ministered to by the angels, God also supports us in our struggle against sin and temptation. We succeed be-cause Jesus conquered sin once and for all in his saving death on the cross. As we enter the forty days of Lent, we can challenge ourselves to embrace the spiritual test we are facing, transforming them and ourselves as we jour-ney to Easter. “Once again Lent comes to make its prophetic ap-peal, to remind us that it is possible to create some-thing new within ourselves and around us, simply be-cause God is faithful, always faithful, for he cannot deny himself, he continues to be rich in goodness and mercy, and he is always ready to forgive and start afresh. With this filial confidence, let us set out on the journey!” —Pope Francis

A sacristan provides the legwork to help other people worship. He or she makes sure all the things necessary for the celebration of the litur-gy are ready before Mass begins. This is known as a “behind the scenes” ministry. For this reason we ask you to prayerfully search your heart and soul and see if this is a ministry you are called to. RCIA: RCIA Today, February 18th, at 2:30pm the cate-chumens and candidates are presented to Archbishop Vlazny. The entire parish too is encouraged and invited to pray for our catechu-mens and candidates. Please select a name from this list and pray daily for them as they complete their journey to the Sacraments. The names are posted on the bulletin board in Church.

Bottle Drive reminder. Keep bringing those bags of bottles and cans. They add up and the proceeds go to the general funds for the parish. So far we have collected over $2,000.00. Anointing of the Sick Mass

Anointing of the Sick celebrates and reminds us of God’s compassion and helps us to expe-rience spiritual and sometimes physical strengthening when we are ill. Who may receive the Anointing of the Sick? Baptized Catholics who have serious health problems due to sickness or old age. The illness may be physical or mental. Anointing of the Sick is communal – as a Church each of us is part of the Body of Christ. We are invited to share this special moment in our parish life by praying for those who will be receiving the Sacrament of Anointing.

Lenten Regulations: All Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, Ash Wednes-day and Good Friday. All Catholics between ages 18 and 59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. To fast means to eat one full meal; the other two meals that day should be less than the normal amount unless they are al-ready at a minimum for good health. Eating be-tween meals is not permitted; however, liquids including coffee, milk and fruit juices are al-lowed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation and the season of Lent. The faithful should be clearly and positively encouraged to receive the Sacra-ment of Penance during Lent. The sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday form 4:00-5:00pm. The parish reconciliation service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 17th at 10am with several priests assisting.

Regulaciones Cuaresmales: Todos los católicos de 14 años en adelante deben abstenerse de comer carne los viernes de cuaresma, el miércoles de ceniza y el viernes santo. Todos los católicos entre las edades de 18 y 59 años deben ayunar el Miércoles de Ceni-za y el Viernes Santo. Ayunar significa comer una comida completa; las otras dos comidas ese día deberían ser menos que la cantidad normal a menos que ya estén en un mínimo para una buena salud. Comer entre comidas no está per-mitido; sin embargo, se permiten líquidos que incluyen café, leche y jugos de fruta. El Sacramento de la Reconciliación y el tiempo de la Cuaresma. Se debe alentar clara y positiva-mente a los fieles a recibir el Sacramento de la Penitencia durante la Cuaresma.
