350 THE IRISH MONTHLY

Pure fires that kindled in the bygone ages

Faithi, deathlless love, self-sacrifice sublime, The Heaven-taught lore of martyred saints and sages,

Thine heritage divine. O World's white Rose ! no longer broken-lhearted,

Thy matchless loveliness with sorrows crowned, For thee, once more, thine evil days departed,

The fruits of peace abound.

O Heart's Desire ! thine exiledl ones, sore yearning, List for tlhy voice in every passing breeze

Their loving tlhoughts to thlee are ever turning, Emerald in silver seas !

O Rose of Joy! througlh all the golden hours Our prayers shall form a jewelled Rosary,

And victory's rich wreath of fadeless flowers

We'll twine, sweet Queen, for thee.

MAAY VIOLET BARRAS

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

(June 24)

HARK, for from the far desert comes a cry That thrills the woeful world all sick xvith sin

" Repent ye, for the time is slhort, begin !

Make straight the pathway of our Lord most high."

The greatest of earth's sons, he did descry The world's most evil state-corrupt within And so, through zeal for God, His world to win,

He called, " Repent ye, for His kingdom's nigh."

O more than Prophet, Herald of the \Vord! True Son of Silence, by the Spirit taught,

In desert solitude his heart was stirred. He listened-and the mighty work was wrought;

And though amidst the throngs his voice was heard, In the deep silence was the message caught.

ALICE GILL.
