PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS To have a prayer added to St. John’s Prayer Chain, please call Shirley 715-384-3613 and Donna 715-384-2479 (there are 2 lists). If you wish to become a member of the prayer chain, please call Jane Gerend at 715-387-2019 or Ann Bohnert at 715-389-2726. Youth Servers: The Sept. - Dec. serving schedule will soon be ready. Please call the parish office by July 31st if you need to make any changes. Come celebrate with us the Eucharist including the Sacrament of the Sick on Wednesday, July 26th at 9:00am. We extend a special invitation to the sick and homebound who feel well enough to come. Transportation to and from St. John’s will again be available. Please call the parish office 715-384-3252 ext. 2, Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 5:00pm if you would like a ride to Church for this occasion or if you wish to volunteer to drive. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has taken on a different connotation since the Second Vatican Council. The sacrament is celebrated not only for those who are dying, but to those preparing for major surgery, the aged, and the sick. It is a time for the Church to pray with those who are ill and anoint them with oil. The proper celebrant of this sacrament is a priest. Those who desire to receive this sacrament while preparing for major surgery should contact Fr. Martin in advance. Those who are ill or aging should contact Sr. Rita who will make arrangements for Fr. Martin to come and celebrate this sacrament. St. John’s Parish Family has the opportunity to aid the less fortunate in our area by serving a fellowship meal in the Gathering Room of St. Vincent de Paul Center. We meet on July 26th at 3pm to set up, serve the meal at 5pm and finish with clean-up by 6:30pm. If you are able to help, call Jane at 715-387-2019. Vacation Bible School - The week to set aside is July 31st-Aug. 4th. Adult and teen volunteers will be needed and child care will be offered. If you are able to volunteer, please call Heather at 715-897-1941. Registration forms available in the kiosk in the entranceway. Tracking Mary: The Queen of Heaven Express is leaving the station! Mysteries and Messages Revealed at Each Stop! Discover how Mary brings us closer to Jesus through the Power of the Rosary! Help us provide an outstanding Vacation Bible School experience for our young people by taking an “ornament” off of our tree (located in the back of church) and either purchase or donate money for the item listed. Please return the item to the box provided or place the money in a marked envelope in the collection by July 26th. Thank you for being a part of helping our children grow in faith. Relevant Radio Live: Fr, Martin is scheduled the following dates for the Inner Life Program on Relevant Radio: July 28th, Aug. 16th, Sept. 13th, Oct. 23rd, Nov. 29th, Dec. 21st all in 2017 and Jan. 25th in 2018. All shows air at 11:00am. Please note that Fr. Martin will not be the guest host on any of these dates in the event of a parish funeral. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! Do you ever worry about money? Most people do, and contrary to popular belief, materially rich people worry about money at least as much as poor people. We celebrate this week National Natural Family Planning (NFP) week and before you accuse me of non sequitur (i.e. something that does not logically follow), please read on. Thanks to Alice Heinzen, the director of our diocesan marriage and family life office, we have access to remarkable resources that help couples live out their marriage vows (the website is diolc.org). Recently Alice forwarded a link to testimonies given by couples who use NFP and let me tell you how edifying and insightful they were… for example, one husband admitted, “I don’t think it is accidental that most divorces occur over the central agitations of sex and money. Looking back, I’m convinced that trusting in God’s provision in the area of finances, and more slowly in the area of our sexual relationship and openness to children were deeply connected. The issue, in either area, is fundamentally not about correct numbers but about to Whom we entrust our family.” Now the connection between NFP and money becomes more clear – it is about trusting God in every area of our life. Most of us find some aspects easier than others when it comes to truly trusting in God’s Providence. For example, one couple with five kids was considering sterilization because, as the wife admitted, “That teaching doesn’t apply to us, we have five kids.” Later on she and her husband changed their mind and eventually had a sixth child, whom they now love as the apple of their eye. Yes, trusting God in this intimate area is a struggle for human beings, and our Catholic couples are not immune to this challenge. As another husband put it, “Stacy and I understood NFP to be, at bottom, about bringing our whole lives – including our sexuality – into cooperation with God’s plan.” Yes, NFP is challenging because it asks us to trust God in very personal parts of our lives, and this is not easy for us… conversion is never easy. “Better to aim high and miss than to aim low and hit.” Yes, NFP is aiming high because it helps married couples to trust in God and to truly do His will. And there are so many fruits for those who are willing to give NFP a try. For example, one husband admitted, “Much to my surprise, I also learned how grateful my wife was that I was willing to learn how her body worked. Sharing the family planning responsibility, as well as finding non-sexual ways of expressing affection and intimacy when we had good reasons to postpone pregnancy, strengthened our marriage and made me a better husband and father.” And while there are many other reasons to recommend NFP, the fact that only 1% of NFP couples end in divorce beautifully validates Jesus’ statement that “you will know them by their fruits.” NFP does demand more of the couples that practice it, but it’s a burden that is not born alone, as Jennifer and John Campbell testify: “Unlike artificial contraception – which usually places full burden of family planning on the woman – NFP promotes shared responsibility of the fertility of both the husband and wife. It lends a spirit of togetherness to a marriage.” Yes, we live in a fallen world that sees many people doing what everybody else is doing but expecting different results. But for those who follow the Catholic Church’s teaching about marital intimacy, they often discover joy in somewhat surprising places. Our last testimony comes from a wife, who had this to say: “One of the things that really happens through living with NFP over the years is that you are awakened and realize how wonderful children are, that they are truly gifts from God. NFP has seen me through the journey from fear to acceptance, to a great joy in my fertility.” May God bless all marriages with greater trust in His Providence, for them and their families! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN Parish Pull report: Thank God for the most glorious evening one could hope for as we hosted our 5th annual Parish Pull on July 14th. The crowd was the biggest ever (as well as the hungriest and thirstiest) and our valiant and generous volunteers were once again up to the challenge. I am so proud of all the generosity and joy I saw displayed by our volunteers in making this an event that truly draws our community closer together. Though we do not yet have the final numbers, I hope that we’ll be able to donate around $30,000.00 to Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Family Shelter. Please say a prayer in gratitude to God and His co-workers who made this yet again a wonderful event. Save the date: August 8th is the 2nd Annual Vocations Dinner at Our Lady of Peace. Mass is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with a social at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. What makes this such a wonderful event is the chance to meet some of our seminarians. You should have received an invitation in the mail. I hope to see many of you there!

Diocese of La Crosse - Building Upon A Tradition of Faith The Diocese of La Crosse will be celebrating its 150th anniversary as a Diocese (March 3, 1868 - March 3, 2018). To commemorate this special event a full color 400 plus page hardcover book depicting all the parishes in our diocese will be available for purchase at the price of $33.00. This book is a unique and richly illustrated publication telling our 150 year story as a diocese. Only a limited number of books will be available for purchase. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is beginning on September 7th, 2017 with full entrance into the church occurring at Easter of 2018. RCIA is the process whereby a person learns about the beautiful Catholic faith that we sometimes take for granted. Please pick up a brochure at the entrance of the church if you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or if you just want to deepen your understanding of the faith. This will be an excellent way to grow closer to God by learning about Catholicism and how it promotes heroic goodness! For more information, contact Dcn. Jeff Austin at 715-676-3186 or Jane Gerend at 715-387-2019. MERIT (Marshfield’s Exceptional Religious Instruction Team) is a specialized religious education program offered to students with cognitive disabilities who struggle with the inclusive challenges of standard programs offered by their parishes. MERIT offers individualized instruction through the use of art, story telling, song and fellowship. Class format and structure are based on the cognitive levels, needs, and individual abilities of the students enrolled. Lessons are based on Bible stories, events from the church year and living our Catholic faith. Classes meet on Mon. evenings beginning in Oct. Cost is $20 if registered by Aug. 20th (cost is $40 for later registration). Mission Team 2017 Trip to Tanzania: Join us as we pray: From Fr. Martin: "This pilgrimage is in the hands of the Lord - it will be what He wants it to be. May we, by our prayers and sacrifices, be disposed to receive what God wants to give us through the Sisters and the many other people we will meet.” From Sister Sabina: "God of all courage, help us to walk alongside our sisters and brothers in Tanzania as they struggle to feed their families and live their faith. We know you hear the cry of the poor and call on us to live out your desire for charity. May we, through prayer and action, show your love for the people in need around the world as we share our bread with the hungry. In Jesus’ name who shared bread with the hungry and gave hope to those in despair.

Catholic teaching on love, sex, and “responsible parenthood” is a resounding “YES!” to God’s plan for husband, wife, and marriage. When a man and woman marry, their “Yes” to each other should also include their “Yes” to God’s plan for married love. Why? God is the author of marriage God is the creator. He created men and women in his image (Gen 1:27). And, God is the author of marriage as well. God designed married love to be total, fruitful, faithful and exclusive. Marriage was created to mirror God’s own Trinitarian love. Married love therefore rejoices in the other and is respectful of God’s design. This means that husband and wife offer themselves to each other as a gift. There is no “taking” here, just “offering” and “receiving.” There is no exclusion, like denying God, one’s person, or fertility. Anything that counters the meaning and beautiful integrity of the marital act and God’s call for life is avoided (e.g. contraception, sterilization, pornography, IVF, or surrogacy).

God willed that married love involves the whole person, with reason, a well-formed conscience in God’s truth (that’s what Church teaching is!), and fertility. It also means that husband and wife understand that openness to new human life is not an “add on” but an essential element of married life-indeed God himself entrusted husband and wife with the gift of life. This is true whether a couple is fertile or not. Married couples ought to prayerfully discern when God is calling them to bring new life into the world, not treat it in a casual way. What does all this have to do with Natural Family Planning? Catholic teaching on the nature of human sexuality, marriage conjugal love and responsible parenthood reflects God’s loving design. The significance of NFP methods is that they are the tools to help husband and wife live that reality. This is because the methods of NFP respect God’s plan for married love. They do nothing to harm God’s design. That is why the Church supports NFP use in marriage. NFP—good medicine Natural Family Planning is the general title for the scientific and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone a pregnancy. NFP methods provide fertility education that is informative and practical. NFP helps husband and wife to live healthfully and honestly with their combined fertility. The facts of human reproduction form the basis of all NFP methods. Specifically, NFP methods attempt to identify the “fertile window” of husband and wife. The fertile window is the combination of information about the woman’s day of fertility (ovulation, which occurs only within a 12-24 hour period) and that of the man’s fertility (sperm, which can live in a fertile woman’s body for up to 5 days). When a woman is fertile, her reproductive hormones will send messages that yield specific and observable signs. Recognizing the pattern of those physical signs forms the basis for most NFP methods.

NFP methods The majority of NFP methods are based on the daily observation of the woman’s signs of fertility. This takes some effort to learn. NFP methods provide guidelines to help couples identify the fertile and infertile time in the wife’s cycle. Pinpointing their “fertile window” (the number of days within the menstrual cycle when they are likely to conceive), is the central focus of NFP methods. Being able to accurately identify the couple’s fertile window is key to successful use of NFP. When a couple realizes that God is calling them to have a baby, they may use the fertile window to conceive. When spouses decide that it is time to avoid a pregnancy, they will abstain from sex during the fertile time. Periodic sexual abstinence is the NFP means to avoid a pregnancy. No drugs, barriers, devices, or surgical procedures are ever used. NFP works! Any couple can use an NFP method. The key is to learn the method well, be aware of God’s will for your marriage, and apply the guidelines consistently. When looking for an NFP method to learn, you should know that there is no “best method.” All NFP methods are based on solid science. Choosing a method depends upon how much fertility information a couple needs and can live with! NFP, it’s time! It’s time to give NFP a chance! The benefits are many. NFP provides sound fertility education. It is environmentally safe and has no harmful side-effects. NFP education is also economical. Most providers chare fees for class (or an on-line course) and any resources—that’s it! Most importantly, NFP respects God’s plan for married love. It promotes respect for one’s spouse, the virtue of chastity, self-sacrifice, and mindfulness regarding the meaning of married love. It may not always be easy, but if a couple perseveres, NFP can actually help them deepen their relationship with each other and God!
