Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Monday we join all in our nation to remember and pray for those of our country who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in our armed services, as well as for those who returned, well or injured, and all those who currently serve in the military to keep our country safe. Our concelebrated and only Mass for the day will be at 9am.

As part of our Archdiocesan Mission Cooperation Plan, two Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco (Sr. Maryann Schaefer and Sr. Carmen Morales) will speak after a brief homily next weekend on behalf of their foreign mission ministries. They will be asking for your help in support of their works throughout the world.

The Salesian Sisters are a worldwide Community counting over 12,000 Sisters spreading the Gospel on every Continent. Approximately 3,000 Sisters work in mission areas affected by great poverty, disease, political unrest, violence, war and other difficult conditions, such as areas of natural disaster and refugee camps. They are in 17 African Countries the poorest because of war and violence as, for example, South Sudan. They are also in the Middle East, particularly in zones where war is destroying people and environment. In Syria, they have a hospital, perhaps too small for present needs, but the Sisters are dedicating themselves day and night to children, young people, families who have lost their homes, dying and wounded people.

The Salesian Sisters were founded by St. John Bosco in 1872 and started their mission work in 1877 when they departed from Italy for the farthest tip of South America called Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Ever since then, they have continued to provide missionaries for Africa, Asia, Latin America and other places not yet evangelized or in need of re-evangelization.

Their Congregation was specifically founded for the service of poor youth; consequently, most of their ministries will have an educational thrust. They are grateful for the opportunity of sharing their mission work in our parish and of benefitting from your generosity in a special second collection.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

In some of the gospels, Jesus’ betrayal by Judas was seen as an “hour of darkness,” but in John’s theology, it was the “hour of glory.” Jesus anticipated this hour constantly, for example at the wedding of Cana and His solemn entrance into Jerusalem. Knowing His enemies were about to seize Him, Jesus trusted in His Father’s plan of salvation. He knew—as John’s symbolism portrays—that His crucifixion and His glorification were one and the same event. On the cross, Jesus was “lifted up from the earth,” that is, exalted. In His passion, death, and resurrection, He assumed the Lordship intended for Him since the moment of His Incarnation.

In this priestly prayer, Jesus also declared to His Father that His authority over all people came through Jesus’ ultimate act of obedience to the Father. Now the Father would glorify His Son by giving Him the name above all other names, supreme authority over all of creation.

We should reflect on John’s sense of how deeply and intricately Jesus’ suffering is related to His glorification. As we spend time pondering this truth in scripture, we can be sure that the Holy Spirit will enlighten us. The Spirit delights in giving His people a profound knowledge of salvation. Our worship in private prayer and in the liturgy, which recalls that “hour,” will deepen. So will our faith in God’s tremendous plan for our salvation. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to give us the mind of Christ.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“I am praying for them...” John 17: 9

Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foundation of Stewardship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you.
