Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The car raffle (Choice of 1 of 4 Toyota models) of our Spanish Community continues until the drawing night of July28th. Chances will be sold outside church again next weekend, as well as on the evening of the raffle in Conlon Hall. This raffle benefits the entire parish by helping to fund the priests who serve you and the activities which take place here. I encourage everyone who can to participate in this raffle, as well as in those which will be drawn in September (Giant 50-50 as part of our Parish Carnival) and in October (Filipino Appreciation Night Raffle).

A few more of you become donors each week to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, which helps to make so many ministries a reality in our archdiocese and our parish. Hundreds of you, dear parishioners, have already pledged $196,601.00, which is more than 203% of our goal and almost 87% of our stretch goal of $226,041.20 for maximum parish rebate. Monthly pledges or one-time gifts are both welcome. If you have not yet done so, please send your pledge card to the Archdiocese or pick up a pledge form/envelope in the church or rectory and deposit it in the Sunday collection basket or drop it off at the rectory.

In the summer of 1969, I had just graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Languages, and completed my Philosophy studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington. As a pianist, I had helped in my home parish of St. Joseph of the Palisades in West New York with leading the singing at Mass on an old pump organ in the lower church, so the Seminary decided to send me to the Pius X School of Liturgical Music, which was located on the campus of the then Catholic Manhattanville College, to learn more about playing the massive Casavant organ in the seminary chapel. It was a marvelous time of getting to know musicians from around the world, and of singing together in a magnificent combined choir.

Perhaps the most exciting event, however, was on the evening of July 21st, when we were all glued to a small black and white television screen as Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, their exploits carefully explained by newsman Walter Cronkite. It was a time of extreme hope, which said that the sky was no longer the limit of human exploit. Coming just a few years after the close of the Second Vatican Council, it also encouraged many that the Council’s reforms, in liturgy and in ecumenical relations, also were without limits. As we have learned, there are always some limitations which can be healthy and appropriate, but there is always room to hope, to dream, to achieve! Msgr. Richard Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares the Twelve for their first missionary venture. They are given the power to drive out unclean spirits, but they can only do this through the authority of Jesus. They must participate in this mission in a truly self-sacrificing manner. Jesus prepares them for possible rejection and failure. If this happens, they are to shake the dust of the place from their sandals as a symbolic act of ridding themselves of any unclean substance that might profane the land of Israel. They are to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick. In this way, the reign of God will be inaugurated.

Perhaps Jesus’ disciples knew the story of the prophet Amos, since many of them were from up north—the fishermen Peter and Andrew, James and John, to be sure and, more than likely, most of the others. When God calls you, you go. The same happened when Jesus came along. All he said was, “Follow Me” and they did. Now he sends them out, preaching, teaching, healing, and casting out demons. Travel light, he says. Stay where you land. Keep to the message. If they don’t want it, move along.

The Lord continues to send us out, as God did with prophets and as Jesus did with those first disciples. The world needs the message more than ever: God wants a family that will be faithful to God, loving to each other and caring for the earth once entrusted to Adam and Eve for tending. God wants a holy people. This holiness comes as a gift from God, if we accept it. For this message to get out, messengers are needed, witnesses in word and deed. That’s us!

“Jesus, Risen Lord, you continue to call men and women to join you in the work of preaching the gospel and delivering the world from the power of evil. Give us generous hearts that we might respond willingly to your invitation and faithfully fulfill the work to which you have called us.”

Transfiguration Academy What is An Academy? According to Brother Ralph Darmento, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, who authored the guidelines for academy status in the Newark Archdiocese, “Academy” designation implies that special skills and subjects are taught. There are specific academic standards and enrichment programs that academies must have in order to earn that name. Just some of the academic hallmarks of an academy are as follows: world language instruction given throughout the curriculum (Grades 1-4 at least on a weekly basis; Grades 5-8 more frequently, three times per week at a minimum), mathematics program to consist of the regular courses as well as a full year of standard algebra course, science laboratory integrated throughout the curriculum, art and music courses as part of the curriculum, and religious education and formation programs addressing the academic, sacramental and spiritual preparation of students. This academy model starts right from the beginning with an Early Childhood Program that engages students in age-appropriate learning…. Much of this is also integrated with technology, such as classroom computers. The students’ extracurricular lives are also addressed by the academy guidelines. Programs offered cover a wide range of items from athletics, to academics, to the arts. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the performing arts through things like choir or drama (*Source: The Catholic Advocate, January 24, 2008) Transfiguration Academy is a Middle States Association Accredited Academy. Our students have won a number of awards, including three top ten finishes in the North Jersey Region “Future City” Engineering Competition, and several awards at Bergen Catholic, St. Joseph, and Queen of Peace academic challenges. Our students also participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program, the National Young Leadership Conference, and the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon. Our graduates have won over $2 Million in academic scholarships and grants to some of the most prestigious high schools in New Jersey and New York. The Academy has a complete Science Laboratory and an Engineering and Technology lab, a computer lab, a Language laboratory, “Interactive White Boards”, Smart Table and “Document Camera” technologies. The Academy also has an award winning art program, as well as a complete Music program, including band and choir. Before Care and After Care are available, as are extensive activities and extracurricular programs, such as basketball, tennis, karate, chess, drama, and science clubs, cheerleading, school newspaper, and robotics, just to mention a few. Our faculty is fully licensed and credentialed with many having advanced degrees, including several Masters’ degrees, a PH.D, and wealth of experience. Transfiguration Academy prepares students to face the challenges of a changing society and become the leaders of tomorrow through strengthening faith, enlightening minds and transforming hearts, one student at a time.
