    Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It’s time for new year’s resolutions. Hopefully we can make a few that we will really try to keep, rather than many that become too overwhelming. One should be spending more time with the Lord in prayer, both at Sunday Mass and in daily prayer. This always produces rich benefits for our life in Christ!

    +++

    Please see the letter from Cardinal Tobin in today’s bulletin, announcing a re-evaluation of the process we are using to ensure a strong presence of Catholic schools in the years ahead. You may be called to add your thoughts to the conversation once the process gets started in the new year.

    On this feast of the Holy Family, may God bless each of our parish families with mutual respect, kindness, support, and love!

    Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

    Reflection on Today’s Readings

    What did Simeon and Anna expect to find as they prayed in the temple and fasted for the coming of the Messiah? Were they surprised that the answer to their supplications was a tiny baby, helpless and dependent on His humble parents? Could this little child really be the “King of glory” whom the psalmist had proclaimed? Here was God incarnate, taking on our own flesh in the most humble way possible. “He had to be made like His brethren in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God.” This passage is read on the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple, (February 2nd), also known as the ‘Feast of the Encounter.” The term “encounter” suggests an element of surprise. All their lives, Simeon and Anna had prepared themselves for this encounter in the temple, even though they didn’t know when or how it would happen. Because of their prayer and attentiveness to the Spirit, these two people were able to see the splendor of God in Mary’s small child. Filled with gratitude, Simeon “took Him up in his arms and blessed God.” How blessed are we that the resurrected Lord has come to His temple to remain! In the Eucharist, under the appearance of ordinary bread and wine, Jesus comes to meet us. In baptism, He has taken up residence in the temple of our hearts as well. By the shedding of His Blood and the outpouring of His Spirit, He has purified us and delivered us from death. Like Simeon and Anna, let us prepare ourselves for our encounter with the Lord. We may be surprised to meet Him in those around us, in the poor and helpless, the sick and dying. He is always waiting for us in His temple, in the Eucharist, waiting for us to embrace Him and hold Him close to our hearts. His love— stronger than any sin we may commit—will purify us. Then like Simeon, we will be filled with His peace. Like Anna, we will give “thanks to God.”

    Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

    “...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” Colossians 3:13

    Forgiveness—one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone—maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-wokrer or neighbor, or maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

    10th Annual “Celebrating the Arts” Bookfair Earlier this month, Transfiguration Academy celebrated its 10th annual “Celebrating the Arts” Barnes & Noble bookfair at the Paramus store. These bookfairs are an opportunity for student to showcase their visual and performing arts skills for family, friends, and store shoppers. Some of the performances included: Christmas caroling with the choir, a “Broadway” Cabaret featuring student vocalists and instrumentalists, drama club performing scenes from our upcoming 2018 show, “Beauty and the Beast” as well as prior Disney musicals we produced, a Periodic Table of Elements song sung by our eighth grade, and a recital by our PreK-4 Class.
