Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we provide the fifth insert from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Please read and reflect on it. In their statement on “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”, the U.S. Catholic Bishops remind Catholics, “We are called to bring together our principles and our political choices, our values and our votes, to help build a better world.” (no. 14). Hopefully everyone newly eligible to vote has registered, and any registered voter who will be out of town on Election Day has requested an absentee ballot. Today’s insert contains guidelines for contacting elected officials, which can be done both before and after an election. Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org to watch videos and access other great resources on faithful citizenship.

More Catholics are choosing cremation after death, and we often get questioned on the Church’s position. Last week we summarized our belief and our practice, that cremation is possible after the body has been presented for a funeral Mass, that the cremated remains must be always buried or entombed, preferably in a Catholic cemetery, and that occasionally there may be exceptional circumstances in which cremation must occur immediately after death for which the U.S. Bishops have received permission from the Vatican to have the cremated remains present at the funeral liturgy with the pastor’s permission. Some final directives are added below.

In All Cases: The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and their final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or a friend of the deceased, is not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Our reverence for the cremated human remains also does not allow them to be separated, made into jewelry, or disposed of in any other way. Whenever possible, appropriate means for memorializing the deceased should be utilized, such as a plaque or stone that records the name of the deceased. The pastor should be advised at the time the funeral arrangements are made as to the final disposition of the cremated remains. If at a nearby cemetery, a committal service at the time of interment or entombment can be readily arranged with a priest of the parish.

    Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

    Reflection on Today’s Readings

Our readings today could lead us to paraphrase a Christmas song: “Do you see as God sees?” Are we finding good in all that God has made? The author of Wisdom tells us that God overlooks our sins and has mercy on all to invite repentance. Do we see as God sees, finding good in all that God has made? Jesus does. He sees Zacchaeus as someone lost who can be saved. Zacchaeus climbs a tree hoping to see Jesus and Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house. Zacchaeus promises to change his ways. What does the crowd see? A sinner, unworthy of Jesus’ treatment. Do we look for good as God sees or do we see only sinners, unworthy of mercy and of less value than we judge ourselves?

In all honesty, we must confess that there are some people we are ready to view with God’s merciful eyes, willing to look for good within them. But there are those in whom we see only sin or evil because of the harm they’ve done. We find it difficult to find any possibility of goodness within them. Experiences like the Holocaust, the massacres by ISIS, and the abuse of children blind us to seeing any hope for healing that God sees in all. Divine mercy does not preclude suffering consequences for one’s choices. But God’s vision always sees that a change of heart is possible, even where we would rather not see that. “Do we see as God sees?” Where we do, give thanks. Where we do not, climb a tree, pray that God’s vision becomes ours, and hear Jesus say, “Today I must stay at your house.”

“Merciful God, you rebuke offenders little by little that we might abandon our wickedness. Thank you for such merciful love. Help me to see others and myself as you do, that I might grow more merciful little by little each day. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.’” Luke 19: 8

We are all called to graciously give back to the Lord in proportion to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! Open your heart, how is God calling you?
