Communal Anointing of the Sick Mass Today! Sunday, April 25, 2010

3:00pm ~ Upper Church All invited! Please see the “Pastor’s Desk” for details.

  • Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Easter April 25, 2010

Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Communal Anointing of the Sick Mass will take place today, Sunday, April 25th, at 3pm in the Main Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes, “Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as any one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.” The Rite of Anointing further states, “Old people may be anointed if they are in weak condition although no dangerous illness is present. Sick children may be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be comforted by this sacrament.” We encourage all those who find themselves in one or more of these conditions to receive the anointing. Others may participate in the Mass, without being anointed, and receive the Eucharist, even if they have been to another Mass earlier in the day.

+++ Thank you to all who have made and continue to make their pledges to the 2010 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As of April 12th, our pledge total has risen to $189,011.50, which is over 82% of our stretch goal of $228,629.50. If you have not done so, please remember to return your completed pledge envelope either in the collection basket or bring it to the rectory office, or return it in the mail directly to the Archdiocese. I count on every family to participate in some way this year.

+++ Our Annual May Crowning will take place at the 7:30pm Mass on Monday, May 3rd. We invite you to join with our Rosarians and other parishioners in participating in this annual devotion to our Blessed Mother.

+++ The New Jersey Regional Coalition in cooperation with our parish and the Archdiocese of Newark Office of Human Concerns will present a film screening of the award-winning PBS documentary “THE NEW METROPOLIS” on THURSDAY, MAY 27th, from 7pm to 9pm at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Robison Hall—Lecture Room 100, 1000 River Rd., in Teaneck. The site offers convenient parking and an accessible building. The screening will be followed by a discussion with local experts and elected officials about how we can work collaboratively to restore opportunity and prosperity to our communities. Tickets are $10 per person; however, our parish will pay half the cost of any registered parishioner willing to attend. Please stop by the rectory and leave your name, address, phone, and payment (check may be made payable to “St. John’s Church”). We will notify you of pick up time for tickets. I hope a good number of our parishioners will attend. Congregations from South Bergen and North Hudson counties will be attending.

+++ We welcome a new neighbor to town: Gino’s Great Pizza, 56 S. Washington Avenue, next to Cinema 5. The rectory staff verifies their claim to be the “Home of New Jersey’s Best Focaccia” after trying some samples. The business is family run, open every day, and reasonably priced, including Grand Opening Specials. Give them a try!

Scripture Reflection for Fourth Sunday of Easter

Last December at a Mass marking the 30th anniversary of Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s death, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan thanked God for the life of the memorable television and radio personality. Dolan said that while he was a seminarian in Rome, he saw a crowd gathered around the famous archbishop. Sheen told the crowd he had come from an audience with Pope Paul VI. Someone asked what the pope had said to him. Sheen blushed and replied, “The Holy Father said, ‘Fulton Sheen, you will have a high place in heaven.’” Someone else asked Sheen what he had replied to the pope. Sheen said, “Your Holiness, would you mind making that an infallible statement?” In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that we are His flock and that He is giving us eternal life, and no one will snatch us out of the Father’s hand. He has promised all of us that we will have a high place in heaven, if we trust Him and love Him.

Transfiguration Academy: A Choice! There are many reasons people choose alternatives to their public school system. Two stand out, however. One is dissatisfaction with their public school system. Personal experience, anecdotal stories from friends, published test scores; the reasons are as varied as the people in the school. The other is that they seek something public schools by law are not allowed to offer - their faith. While the culture and identity are unmistakably religious in Catholic schools, that is not what the school is all about. It goes beyond being able to pray or talk about Jesus and God. It is the belief in what doing these things (and others) stands for, and, more importantly, exposure to the example set by Christ, that hopefully forms humans prepared to do their best as they live in our world. Catholic schools allow families to pass on their tradition. In our Catholic school, there is no question as to what centers the community. Parents and children understand the value system, and what is expected of them. Prayer and spirituality are not just extras; they are the essence of the school. A disciplined environment based on mutual respect helps children learn. Our Catholic school teaches that discipline is about responsibility and respect rather than punitive measures. They are taught to be responsible for their own actions, and to respect themselves and their peers. Bullying and cruelty are dealt with directly to prevent the isolation that can evolve into a far worse future. A Catholic school embraces the whole person while preparing them for their future. In Catholic schools, the spiritual is allowed to be integrated with the secular. Inherent is the belief that a child is a whole being; the soul is not separated from the mind. Attention to the development of a person prepares them to take on our world with empathy and action.

The question is not whether you can afford

to send your child to Catholic school BUT CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO?
