Thank You
Kettle Moraine Lutheran would like to thank our federated churches for
helping us out with our Twelve Days of Christmas. John Caira, has
terminal cancer called Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia, and is part of a
family of seven, is unable to work to support his family. Student fund
raisers, matching gifts and your generous support raised nearly
$24,000. Thank you for your contributions as you gave the family a much
needed financial boost as they move forward trusting in God’s
providence.

Dirty Fingernails
I heard an interesting tidbit the other day about God and dirty fingernails. I
have to admit that I didn’t hear the whole context, but the person was trying to
make a point about God getting dirt under his fingernails in the Garden of Eden
because he took the time to lovingly plant trees in that place that would be spe-
cial for man (as described in Genesis 2:8ff). God actually hand planting trees in
that garden is kind of up for debate because not only does God not have hands
(remember, he is spirit; cf John 4:24), but also Genesis 1:11ff clearly describes
God willing vegetation into being on day three of creation. It could, however,
mean that God did painstakingly determine the placement of exact vegetation in
Eden to make it the perfect place for man. It just goes to show you that, just
because somebody makes something sound cute concerning Scripture, it does-
n’t mean that it’s always true. (Please, always listen with a critical ear!)
Either way, the comment about dirty fingernails got me thinking, because as a
pastor I try to make sure that my fingernails are clean on Sunday, especially
communion Sundays. It’s not always easy because Saturdays are the days that I
usually do work around the house, and my fingers do get dirty and greasy. But
as a pastor, I feel that it would somewhat embarrassing to not have clean nails.
Where it’s debatable about God having clean nails or not, it’s not debatable
about his Son. Jesus most surely got his nails dirty. There was the time he
drew in the dirt with his fingers (John 8:6) when his enemies were trying to soil
his reputation by catching him in a dilemma concerning an adulterous woman.
Shortly after that, there was another time when he made mud with spit from his
mouth and dirt from the ground (John 9:6), applying the divine ointment to a
blind man’s eyes in order to heal him.
And then one has to wonder how much dirt got on his hands and under his nails
when they laid him on the ground of Calvary in order to affix his hands to
wood. Did the pounding stir up the dust? Did the sweat from his hands cause
them to become soiled? How dirty were his hands from stumbling in the streets
under the heavy burden of the cross? Even if his hands remained clean, his ap-
pearance did not. Because he took up our sins as his own, he was spiritually
soiled in the sight of his Father. When you think about it, because Jesus pur-
posely became dirty in our place, we appear as cleansed to our Father. Because
of Jesus, we are holy in God’s sight.
When I think of Jesus becoming dirty, maybe even under his fingernails, but
most surely as my Substitute, part of me wants to say, “How embarrassing for
him!” And part of me just wants to say, “Wow! He loved me that much! How
great for me!” How great indeed!

From the Principal’s Desk
St. John’s Lutheran School exists to glorify Jesus Christ,
assisting parents in educating, training, and nurturing his
children for this life and for heaven.
Our Preschool and Kindergarten round-up will be held on Thursday,
February 9, at 6:30 pm. If you are a parent of a child who
is getting ready for preschool or kindergarten, you should
have received a letter. If not, please see Mr. Hunter. If at
anytime you have questions about St. John’s Lutheran
School, please do not hesitate to contact me or the school
office! If you also know anyone else who would like
information about us, please give their name and address to
me or drop it off at the office, so we can send more
information to them. Thank you!
St. John’s will be participating in the
“Celebrate Families Resource Fair” on
February 12, 2012, from 11:00 am--4:00
pm. It is a program throughout the month
of February designed to recognize and support families. This is an
opportunity for us to display information about what St. John’s has to offer
families. There has been a sheet in the narthex for several weeks. Please
consider helping with this wonderful opportunity! We are looking for
people to distribute information and talk about St. John’s. Thank you in
advance for offering your time! May God bless our efforts to spread the
good news.
1st & 2nd Quarter Missions St. John’s School has had the opportunity over the past few months to raise
funds for Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School’s Cross Trainer group. This
group is made up of high school students who follow the Great Commission
and spread the good news through mission trips. Our students took on the
challenge of seeing how much money we could raise to help out the good
cause of this ministry. We are excited to be sending off $988.61 to this
ministry. May the Lord bless them as they continue to spread Jesus’ name!

Abortion Increases Mental Health Risks by 81 Percent
New research by leading U.S. researcher Dr. Priscilla Coleman of
Bowling Green State University finds women who have an abortion nearly
double their risk of mental health problems as women who give birth. The
study in the British Journal of Psychiatry examined 22
separate studies examining 877,000 women, with 163,831 women
having had an abortion. The study concluded, “Overall, the results
revealed that women who had undergone an abortion experienced an 81
percent increased risk of mental health problems, and nearly 10 percent of the
incidence of mental health problems were shown to be directly attributable to
abortion.” Abortion was linked with a 34 percent risk of anxiety disorders and
a 37 percent higher probability of depression; more than twice the risk of
alcohol abuse (110 percent); three times greater risk of marijuana use (220
percent); and a 155 percent greater risk of attempting suicide.

Clearly Caring Life Issues

The first Ladies’ Auxiliary meeting of the year was held January
10th.
Pastor Baumann continues to lead us in a devotional series about
the Ladies in our Lord’s Life. The January selection was from
Luke 10:38-42, which is the story of Martha and Mary. While
Mary sat at the Lord’s feet to listen, Martha bustled about making
preparations. When Martha expressed her frustration that her
sister was not helping her, the Lord gently told Martha that Mary
had chosen what was better. One lesson here was, while we
worry ourselves with day to day things that will be gone in a
flash, we forget to focus on that which is everlasting.
The Auxiliary sponsored St. John’s Quilt for a Day on Saturday,
January 21. No quilting experience was necessary. The
volunteers worked on quilts for Northside Lutheran Ministries,
Apacheland (Apache Lutheran Mission), and Quilts for Japan. A
note rec’d by LWMS from Apacheland, in regard to Quilts for
Mission, shared that “any amount or size quilts we receive would
be used to spread the love of Jesus among the Apache. Whenever
we give quilts away we always share with the recipient what
church made their quilt. They are always so grateful for such a
gesture of Christian love.” Thank you to everyone who
participated.
Our next meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary will be Tuesday,
February 14. Our hostesses will be Sue Laubenstein and Lorna
Wilger. If you aren’t already a member, please consider
attending. The ladies would love to see some new faces in our
midst.
God bless you in the month of February and beyond…..

LWMS As I was perusing the 2012 LWMS calendar, I noticed that Pieter Ried had
written a brief article about Indonesia. I'd like to share that with you:
“How do you start a women's ministry where there is nothing? How do you start a women's ministry when women are suppressed and rarely gather together? Start with the Bible. Remind the ladies who they are in Christ. Look at the Scriptures to see how God wants women to use their gifts and abilities to the glory of their Savior. Point out that if this is what God wants, we are to follow God and not culture.
God wants us to actively serve him, to serve each other, and to share the saving gospel with others. Based on Scriptural encouragements, the following five-pronged approach for the women's ministry in Indonesia was adopted:
The purpose of Women's Ministry: ~ Study the Bible together; ~ Express and enjoy fellowship together; ~ Serve within the congregation; ~ Do good to all people by serving the community; ~ And train the women to be witnesses to other women,
especially those who do not yet believe in Jesus.
This is really a key to sharing the gospel in a Muslim country, because normally only a woman can minister to a woman.
May God's kingdom continue in us and come to others through us. Amen.” - Pieter Ried, Indonesia
In your prayers, remember those who serve our Lord in the mission field, both
abroad and at home. Pray for their safety and for courage to continue to bring
the Gospel to lost souls. “Boldly and without hindrance he preached the
kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.” - Acts 28:31
Lorna Wilger, LWMS Reporter
PS - Please be sure to check the bulletin board in the narthex for newsletters
from LWMS and from those in the mission field.

~ ~ ~ Altar Committee ~ ~ ~
Many of us have talents that we would like to share but are unaware that there
is a need. Do you like arranging flowers? Would you be interested in helping
with preparing the communionware for Communion on Sundays? Taking care
of the plants in the church?
We have ladies that have been taking care of the altar for several years and we
are looking for anyone to learn what we do and maybe be a backup if it is
needed. On Saturdays we setup for communion; it does take between an hour
or two. But other weekends we only have to water plants, fill candles with oil,
and possibly change banners.
Anyone that has been confirmed can be on this committee. We welcome your
willingness to give this a try. At this time, we do have 8 to 10 ladies on this
committee, and we rotate each month. Please think it over, and if you are
interested or have any questions, call Sue Laubenstein at 262-675-6075.
Thanks, Sue

NEW BIBLE STUDY Although this Bible study may seem a little deep for some and
disinteresting to others, it really is an important one to the near future
of our congregation and synod. The New International Version we
use in worship, Bible study, and St. John’s School is no longer being
published, forcing us to look for a new Bible translation to use. Our
synod has appointed a Translation Evaluation Committee (TEC) to
study this matter. The Bible study we are using is the fruit of their
work. For the next fives weeks, here is what we will study:
Lesson 1. Which Bible is the Word of God?
Lesson 2. Understanding the Challenges of Translation
Lesson 3. The Problem with Language
Lesson 4. Principles and Purposes
The Bible study will also include detailed appendices on Translator
Notes, Frequently Asked Questions, and a reprint of three Forward in
Christ articles. May God bless our study, and the decisions of our
districts as we make decisions for the future of our synod.
