Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29, 2017

Fr. Mark’s Remarks

It stirs our hearts and inspires us to see so many fellow parishioners offering their time and hands in outreach within our community. We do our best to answer the call of the Gospel.

Many are involved in quilting prayer blankets, teaching religious education, assisting the parish school, helping our two St. Vincent de Paul chapters in home visits to needy or helping our food pantry, aiding campus ministries, and helping in liturgies and sacramental programs. Many others volunteer at the VOA, Advent House, Haven House, in hospice and hospital care, in our Compassionate Visitors Program, gardening at our parish sites or the Retreat Center in Dewitt, and serving food and offering comfort at funeral lunches. Hundreds of us help in many different ways. Many serve on committees, councils, and in organizations that enhance our parish community and beyond.

The weekends of November 5 and 12 we have yet another opportunity to help support one of our community ministries - the Cristo Rey Community Center in north Lansing. For the third year, we will stock their kitchen pantry with items needed in their hot meals ministry that are not available through the Greater Lansing Food Bank. Cristo Rey has been serving Greater Lansing since 1968 with direct assistance programs, family health care and counseling services, and financial guidance and empowerment.

Since establishing its hot breakfast and sack lunch programs three years ago, dozens of our parishioners have helped on Monday through Friday mornings to chop potatoes, fruit and vegetables, toast bagels, crack thousands of eggs, and make thousands of sandwiches. By the end of the year, Cristo Rey will have served more than 25,000 meals to anyone who walks through their doors.

Please look at the list in this bulletin and on our parish website and see what you can do to help out in the next few weeks. The blue buckets will be out in both churches. Last year we filled an SUV five times with our goods and just now Cristo Rey is running short on plastic sandwich bags, napkins, cooking oil and pancake syrup! God is so good to us, let us share God’s blessings!

Have a blessed week!

St. Vincent de Paul

In this Sunday’s Gospel we find the truth that

loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in

our hearts, but that it must be expressed in

doing good for the sake of others.

This month, through your gifts, the Society

of St. Vincent de Paul was able to show that we

indeed love our neighbors by assisting families, with

food, utility, and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

Coffee & Chocolate Sale

This Weekend! October 28-29 after all Masses

At Both Sites

Please join our parish’s JustFaith community in

supporting our Fair Trade Sale of organic coffee and

chocolate this weekend. Fair Trade products help us

to stand in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable,

ensure that God’s creation is treated with respect,

and provide fair compensation to farmers in the

developing world.

As Pope Benedict XVI reminded us, “purchasing is

always a moral – and not simply economic – act.” And as

Pope Francis has said, “There is no worse material

poverty . . . than the poverty which prevents people from

earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of

work.”

Look for the Fair Trade Table after all Masses

this weekend. Thank you!

Daylight Savings Time ends next

weekend, Sunday, November 5! Set your clocks back one hour Saturday night.

Interfaith Conference on Religious Freedom Tuesday, November 7

Ever wonder what you can do to support religious

freedom in your family and in your community?

Throughout this year, television commercials have

highlighted how the Catholic Church in Michigan

exercises its freedom to serve others. Continuing

with that theme, the Catholic Church is joining with

other faiths to host an Interfaith Religious

Freedom Conference in Detroit on Tuesday, November 7.

The keynote speakers include Archbishop Allen H.

Vigneron of Detroit and Elder Von G. Keetch of the

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The

event will take place from 7:00-9:00pm at SS. Peter

and Paul Jesuit Church in Detroit (438 St. Antoine St).

Space is limited. Come and learn how you can

support religious freedom at this free event and

register to reserve your spot today at www.irfc-

Conference.eventbrite.com.

experience is needed and we will have all the supplies.

love and serve you as faithful and generous

witnesses to the enduring hope

found only in You.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

This Sunday the catechumens, candidates, and their sponsors gathered to consider the topic, "Catholic Social Teaching". The United States bishops have described seven basic principles of social justice which are intended to influence private and public life.

The first is the life and dignity of the human person. For Catholics, the human person is central, because everyone is the clearest reflection of God among us. The second principle is the call to family, community, and participation. We have been created social by nature. Because of this we have rights and responsibilities to function in society. The third is the rights and responsibilities of the human person. Basic rights flow from our God-given dignity. These include the right to things such as food, clothing, shelter, and a share of earthly goods sufficient for oneself and one's family. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities -- to one another, to our families, and to the larger society, and to work for the common good. The fourth is a preferential option for the poor and vulnerable. Whenever society considers its needs, it ought to think first of the poor and vulnerable. A basic moral test of a society is how its most vulnerable members are faring. The fifth principle is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is an expression of our dignity and a form of continuing participation in God's creation. People have the right to decent and productive work, to fair wages, and to private property. In Catholic teaching, the economy exists to serve people; people do not exist to serve the economy. The sixth is solidarity with all human beings. As a Christian, I can't think only of myself or my particular group. We are one human family, despite the differences existing among us. The seventh principle is care for the environment and God's creation. As human beings we are responsible for sustaining the earth and all its inhabitants through the proper use of the earth's resources. The group also had an opportunity to reflect upon and discuss various ways of living out these seven principles of Catholic social teaching.

Faith Sharing Questions on Next Sunday’s Gospel

We invite you to prepare for next Sundays’ liturgies

by reflecting on the Gospel reading.

Matthew 23:1–12 [Jesus said,] “Whoever exalts

himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will

be exalted.”

As a parent, am I a priest in my family? Do I

lead my children in prayer, teach them the faith,

and set a good example of faith and love of

God?

Do I pray for priests and offer them support

and help?

Bringing Home the Word is a monthly newsletter

subscribed to by our parish offering reflections on the

Sunday readings. You can either download it from

elcatholics.org on the Adult Faith Formation page or

we are happy to email it to you monthly upon

request. (Contact Al at [email protected].)

Opening the Word is a video program offering

prayer and insights on the Sunday Scriptures available

through FORMED.org. Our parish has a subscription

and you can access it for FREE using our parish access

code: 07838b. Enjoy this video program, and many

more wonderful resources at FORMED.org!

This past Tuesday the inquirers and their sponsors had a retreat in preparation for the Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome. They considered any suffering or challenge they have had in their lives. They also considered the suffering of large groups of people in the past and the suffering people go through today either through natural disasters, war, violence, or other circumstances. They reflected on the suffering and death of Jesus for our sake and how the cross is the major symbol of our Christian faith. Finally, they were led to consider how each of us can join our challenges and suffering to the suffering of Christ for the good of others. After the retreat the group went through a rehearsal for the Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome in the church at St. Thomas Aquinas. If you have been thinking about exploring your interest in the Catholic Church, or if you know someone who has mentioned this possibility, call Pete Ries at 517-351-5460, ext. 1328 or email him at [email protected].
