GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE The Ascension of the Lord What is the most common image you've seen of the Ascension? It's typically Jesus hovering above the earth surrounded by brilliant light. The Ascension is a beautiful feast, but it's about more than the distant glory of God. It's about the blessing of God and the transformative power of trust. "You are witnesses to these things." Before he as-cends, Jesus reminds the disciples of the basic mes-sage of the Gospel and of the disciples' own im-portant role. They are to proclaim the Gospel mes-sage by their personal witness to the saving power of God. "I am sending the promise of my Father upon you...clothed with power from on high." Jesus prom-ises to equip the disciples for this important mission. Not only are they receiving a command, but they're receiving the empowerment they need to move. "He...raised his hands, and blessed them." Even now, though the fulfillment of Pentecost is still to come, Jesus gives them a parting gift before he ascends into heaven. Finally, "They...returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God." The disciples faced an unknown future. Their teach-er had left them, and the political and religious au-thorities weren't exactly thrilled about Jesus and his growing movement. But the memory of our Father's redemptive love, the promise of the Holy Spirit, and the blessing of Christ sustained them. Jesus trusted them to act in his name. They could trust him in re-turn. Do you face uncertainty in your own life? Re-member, we are all called to be disciples and wit-nesses. We have received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at our baptism. We are blessed by Christ be-yond imagining in the sacraments. This Ascension feast, we too can trust in God! With this firm trust, we too can return to our daily lives, praising God with great joy!

Celebrating Fr. Karol’s Faithful Service

What a beautiful celebration to recognize Fr. Karol’s 10-year anniversary of his Priestly Ordination. The fes-tivities began with Mass, concelebrated with 4 of Fr. Karol’s brother priests and 3 deacons. The ministries presented Fr. Karol with gifts on behalf of each ministry. Andy and the choir made the day special by includ-ing songs that had significant meaning to Fr. Karol. You can tell from the pictures here how he enjoyed the moment.

The celebration continued as we moved into the Social Hall for a nice reception. Fr. Karol had an opportunity to visit with all those who attended from St. John parish, St. Christina, and other friends who came to wish him well.

Fr. Larry Sullivan, the former pastor of St. Christina where Fr. Karol began his ministry, led the group in a blessing for Fr. Karol; and toasted to Fr. Karol’s care of all those whom he has served.

The parish of St. John has been blessed to have Fr. Karol with us these last 4 years. Let us keep Fr. Karol in our prayers as he continues on his journey to serve our Lord. God bless you, Fr. Karol.

Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill 2019 Mission Cooperation Appeal in our Parish June 8-9, 2019

It is wonderful to be able to sponsor the Diocesan Mission Cooperation Appeal in our parish again this year. On June 8-9, 2019 we will be honored to have Sister Jane Ann Cherubin, SC with us to share the good news of the mission works of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in China, Korea and Ecuador. The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill first missioned four sisters from Pennsylvania to Korea in 1960. At that time it took a month for the sisters to travel by freighter ship to Korea, now it takes only hours by airplane! As our world grows smaller, our hearts grow larger and we reach out to others. We are pleased to have this opportunity to learn about the missions and to help with our prayers and donations. As the sisters continue to bring the love of the Lord to the people they serve, they need our help—they cannot do it alone! Wherever we may live we are all missionaries and can help in different ways! Please give from the heart on June 8-9 to help spread the Gospel throughout the world and assist the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill to share God’s love with those in need. Your prayers and donations will bring blessings of hope and healing! God Bless You for Your Generosity!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The mystery of the Ascension has to do with holding in tension a sense of God s nearness, along with the burden caused by apparent signs of absence. The risen Jesus says to Mary Magdalene, Do not cling to me, perhaps pointing out to her that his physical presence to the disciples was time-bound and temporary. It was a gift for their transformation, and after forty days, he vanished from their sight and hearing, though never out of their consciousness. They do not mourn at his going this time: there is no trace of the disciples who hid in fear at his crucifixion, no sense of the women who wept softly as they carried ointments to the tomb through the dewy morning light. Instead, the scriptural accounts show them full of joy, comforted by his promise to be with them forever, and open to the Spirit s power. They are joyful, energized, aware, and united with one another in love. They seem to grasp an awareness that if the mission to the whole world was a serious one, then the presence of the Risen Christ could not be pinned down to any one place or time, but had to be always and everywhere completely available. All peoples, all times, all cultures were opened to re-ceive him in this moment of the Ascension. The energy of this feast is drawn not from absence, but renewed and deeper presence. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Why do some dioceses move holy days or not even celebrate them at all. Doesn't everyone do the same thing?

Answer: The short answer is no, not everyone does the same thing. Although the Church is universal, there are many local cus-toms and saints that each country, sometimes just a region, will honor. For example, feast days and patronal days may not be major feast days on the Church's universal calendar but are celebrated as such in one place. Holy days of obliga-tion are the same way. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has a certain amount of discretion in choosing days which best reflect the local church's experience and history.

Another reason certain feasts are moved is a practical one. With limited clergy, or a great difficulty for people to get to Mass, the feast day may be transferred to a Sunday. The rationale is that if a significant feast should be part of the church's celebration, then better to do so on a Sunday when people and clergy are available, rather than try to fit it on a day when one or both cannot be there.

Christmas and Immaculate Conception are always observed as days of obligation. In the U.S., we celebrate six holy days of obligation. There are also other special days, and they are ranked in order of importance as solemnity, feast, memorial, and optional memorial.
