Patron Saint of Brothers
Wolfgang (d. 994) + Bishop and reformer. Born in Swabia, Germany, he studied at Reichenau under the Benedictines and at Wurzburg before serving as a teacher in the cathedral school of Trier. He soon en-tered the Benedictines at Einsiedeln (964) and was appointed head of the monastery school, receiving ordination in 971. He then set out with a group of monks to preach among the Magyars of Hungary, but the following year (972) was named bishop of Regensburg by Emper-or Otto II (r. 973-983). As bishop, he dis-tinguished himself brilliantly for his re-forming zeal and his skills as a states-man. He brought the clergy of the dio-cese into his reforms, restored monaster-ies, promoted education, preached enthu-siastically, and was renowned for his charity and aid to the poor, receiving the title Eleemosynarius Major (Grand Almon-er). He also served as tutor to Emperor Henry II (r. 1014-1024) while he was still king. Wolfgang died at Puppingen near Linz, Austria. He was canonized in 1052

WHEN THERE IS NO "ACCEPTABLE" CANDIDATE
In some political races, each candidate takes a wrong position on one or
more issues involving non-negotiable moral principles. In such a case you
may vote for the candidate who takes the fewest such positions or who
seems least likely to be able to advance immoral legislation, or you may
choose to vote for no one.
A vote cast in such a situation is not morally the same as a positive endorse-
ment for candidates, laws, or programs that promote intrinsic evils: It is only
tolerating a lesser evil to avoid an even greater evil. As Pope John Paul II indi-
cated regarding a situation where it is not possible to overturn or completely
defeat a law allowing abortion, "an elected official, whose absolute personal
opposition to procured abortion was well known, could licitly support pro-
posals aimed at limiting the harm done by such a law and at lessening its
negative consequences at the level of general opinion and public morality"(EV
73; also CPL 4).
Catholics must strive to put in place candidates, laws, and political programs
that are in full accord with non-negotiable moral values. Where a perfect can-
didate, law, or program is not on the table, we are to choose the best option,
the one that promotes the greatest good and entails the least evil. Not voting
may sometimes be the only moral course of action, but we must consider
whether not voting actually promotes good and limits evil in a specific in-
stance. The role of citizens and elected officials is to promote intrinsic moral
values as much as possible today while continuing to work toward better can-
didates, laws, and programs in the future.

Dear Brother Knight,
We all understand that the primary purpose of life insurance is to
provide for your family when you’re no longer there to do so. But, did
you know your life insurance policy could be structured to make a do-
nation to a favorite charity, your parish, or other mission to which
you’re committed?
In this issue, we look at “designing” a whole life policy, and charita-
ble giving may be part of your design. Using life insurance to make a
donation can work along with your plans for other beneficiaries. It
can be a way to leave a legacy of lasting importance, beyond what
you may have been able to do in life.
A donation of life insurance can be set up several ways, depending
on your means and goals. Whether it’s an irrevocable gift of a paid-
up policy, or a contingent benefit with annual premiums paid by you
or the charity, it’s important for you to know your options and the tax
implications, among other details. Some charities are well versed in
planned giving strategies, while others are not.
As your agent, and fellow Knight, I can help you structure a whole life
policy to meet your goals for planned giving. If we haven’t, let’s sit
down soon to discuss and update your plans.
Fraternally yours,
Von Clarke

A Prayer for our Nation as we Prepare to Elect our Leaders
O God, we acknowledge you today as Lord,
Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.
We thank you for the privilege
Of being able to organize ourselves politically
And of knowing that political loyalty
Does not have to mean disloyalty to you.
We thank you for your law,
Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged
And recognized as higher than any human law.
We thank you for the opportunity that this election
year puts before us,
To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote,
But to influence countless others to vote,
And to vote correctly.
Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened.
Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,
Their response to you requires that they be politically active.
Awaken your people to know that they are
not called to be a sect fleeing the world
But rather a community of faith renewing the world.
Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer
Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth;
That the same eyes that read your Word
Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot,
And that they do not cease to be Christians
When they enter the voting booth.
Awaken your people to a commitment to justice
To the sanctity of marriage and the family,
To the dignity of each individual human life,
And to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin,
And not one moment later.
Lord, we rejoice today
That we are citizens of your kingdom.
May that make us all the more committed
To being faithful citizens on earth.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In preparation for Election Day, the Knights of Columbus is calling its members and all the
faithful to join together in a novena to the Holy Trinity through the maternal intercession of
the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the United States.
Join your brother Knights around the nation for this novena, beginning on Sunday, Oct. 30,
and concluding on Monday, Nov. 7. The prayer for the novena can be found HERE.
Our country is in desperate need of prayer. Please ask all your brother Knights and their
families, as well as your pastor and fellow parishioners, to pray this national novena for the
protection, well-being and freedom of our country.
