Random Thoughts….
I am happy to announce that this year’s recipient of the St. Augustine Medal of Service will
be Billy O’Callaghan. The medal is awarded at the Cathedral by Bishop Caggiano to 100 people
from throughout the diocese. Each parish nominates someone who has been of great service to
the parish. Billy would qualify by any criterion. Son of Joe and the late Anne O’Callaghan, he has
been a member of the parish since 1968 and is one of our the hardest working volunteers. Since
I have been in the parish, we have had about 19 Emmaus weekend retreat for teenagers. Billy
has been a part of every team. He comes to all the meetings, provides tissues to people giving
talks, when they get a bit teary, and on the weekends, he works on the auxiliary team setting up,
taking down, and cleaning. He’s there from dawn until lights out. I mention giving tissues to peo-
ple who are sad because Billy is tuned in to the emotional state of everyone on the weekend. If
you are sad he knows it and responds accordingly. Billy also makes comments about what is go-
ing on. His famous line is: “You’ve got that right!” When Billy utters those famous words, he is
almost always saying aloud what other people are thinking.
For many years, Billy was essential to the downstairs children’s Mass on Sunday morn-
ings. He would set up and take down, and watch for anything which needed to be done. He is
one of the most helpful people I have ever met in my life. We are blessed to have him in the par-
ish and his presence makes a huge difference. So when you see Billy, congratulate him and his
big day is Saturday, October 17
th
. Watch for his picture in THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY CATHO-
LIC!
Let me also take a moment to thank our Building and Grounds Committee, led by Alex
Sgoutas and Joe Licek. They have had an enormous amount of work this summer as we have
had major projects underway. The Diocese required us to replace some sidewalks by the
Church; the parking lot needed numerous repairs, and we have been working on our heating and
cooling systems as well as looking at ways to replace our ancient system which is run by pneu-
matic air - state of the art in 1962, but a dinosaur in 2015! All the members of that committee de-
serve our gratitude.

PARISH FESTIVAL NEWS
• The Parish Festival takes place in the
Hall on September 27th from 11:30—
3:00 (food service ending at 2:30)
• This weekend is the last weekend we
are selling advance tickets after all the
Masses for the St. Jerome Parish Festi-
val. Please buy your tickets and pick up
any free Child tickets IN ADVANCE so
we know how much food to purchase.
Enjoy an Italian theme, inflatables, fun, and great
food. The adult admission price is $10.00, the
same as last year. Adult tickets at the door on the
day of the festival are higher: $12. Seniors age 72
and above are half-price, $5.00. Admission for all
children 12 and under is FREE if the child is ac-
companied by a paying adult.
• This year’s ITALIAN THEME is de-
signed to appeal especially to children of
all ages and their families – to seniors,
teens, and all parish members – plentiful
food: a pasta bar with meatballs and
chicken scarpiello, plus hot dogs, ham-
burgers, sausage & peppers, potato
salad, green salad, mac & cheese, popcorn, ice
cream and desserts. Children can play games and
enjoy the inflatables, the magician, balloon-
sculpture, the pie-eating contest, face-painting,
temporary tattoos, and arts & crafts!
• Sept. 27 will be a REACH Sunday, so REACH chil-
dren need only come down to the hall after classes
end, at 11:30 AM, to be right at the festival for
FREE (if they are accompanied by a paying adult).
Parents should pick up their children as they leave
REACH to enter the Festival on Sept. 27. For full
festival details see the spectacular display on the
church hallway bulletin board.
• Please sign up on the hallway
bulletin board for festival set-up, to
do simple food prep, to serve food, to
help with children’s games, to collect
tickets, and to contribute desserts.
We need many people to make the festival a suc-
cess. Please help by signing up today!
Help is needed to launder small altar linens.
Small linens need to be washed weekly, ironed
and folded. Linens may be taken early in the
week and returned before the weekend. If you
have questions, please contact Sr. Agnes 203-
762-4121. A sign up sheet will be located on the
bulletin board in the hallway.
