ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church.

Please consider including your St. James family when planning your will.

A VISIBLE GOD

We find it difficult to convey ideas to people un-less we can actually show them something, demon-strate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visi-ble in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult “public life” at his baptism by John. Today’s Gospel reading tells us of his “first sign,” providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary prob-lems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not regis-tered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offering envelopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it’s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax state-ment or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Religious Education Pro-gram. If you are not registered in the church, we cannot issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and receive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On the weekend of January 26 and 27, our Diocese will be taking up the national collection for the Church in Latin America and Eastern Europe.

In rural Peru, like in many other Latin American countries, opportunities for the faithful to celebrate even the basic rituals of our Catholic faith are often few and far between. Frequently, children cannot receive the Sac-raments of Initiation, and Mass cannot be held regularly. Without mis-sionaries and catechists, the people living there cannot learn about, experience and share the beauty of our Catholic way of life.

In Eastern Europe, our shared faith is deeply present in its cultures, but this faith was severely tested over the course of the previous century. Countries in this region were under communist rule for 40 to over 70 years. During this time, bishops, priests, and church leaders were ar-rested and martyred. Churches were confiscated, communities broken, and people were forced to practice the faith in secret. Despite this reli-gious persecution, the faithful of Eastern Europe today are rebuilding and renewing what was lost.

Your support of this collection will help to rebuild churches, support seminary programs, promote ministries and education for children and families, and renew community life around the regions.

Please be generous, and prayerfully consider how you can support this collection.

May the Lord continue to bless you and your families, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ, +George Leo Thomas Bishop of Las Vegas
