The threshold.
We are at the threshold of the most important week
of the liturgical year and the text offers two mes-
sages pointing to the Passion of Christ First the
messianic figure of the servant of God sung by
Prophet Isaiah. The prophet presents a savior who
does not choose the triumph path but the path of
bitterness. St. Paul reminds us in the epistle to the
Philippians when he talked about self-emptying of
Christ whose divinity went down the level of hu-
mankind. Yet on the horizon looms the dawn of
Easter.
This week that the Lord made his way towards the
culmination of his earthly existence is called the
Passion Sunday. This marks the beginning of the
Holy week; Christ goes to Jerusalem to fulfill the
scriptures to suffer and to be nailed to the wood of
the cross. The cross will turn to be the throne on
which he will reign forever and brining to himself
humanity of every age and offering and offering to
all the gift of redemption. As Christ entered Jerusa-
lem people sang his praise as they shouted in He-
brew “Hosanna” the term that means “save, res-
cue, savior.” Even if he would cost him his life,
Christ would not give up his mission or run away
from it.
Christ did not want to see people to suffer and yet
he tells us in the three synoptic gospels that,
“whoever does not carry his own cross and come
after me cannot be my disciple.” (Lk. 14:27, Mk.
8:34, Mt. 10:38) We find this challenging state-
ment several times in the gospels. It is not what we
would prefer to hear. I would prefer to hear Jesus
saying something like he says in the gospel of St.
John. He says, “If you ask anything of me in my
name, I will do it”. (Jn. 14:14)
Various verbs are used to express this thought
“take up your cross,” such as “carry your own
cross” “make it your own” or “endure it.” The
words that would fit well would be to embrace it.
Christ is calling on us to embrace our cross connot-
ing that we should love our cross. That would

Cristo nos está llamando a abrazar nuestra cruz connotando que debemos amar nuestra cruz. Eso sorprendería a muchos de nosotros cuando plantea-mos las siguientes preguntas; ¿Abrazándolo? ¿Amándolo? Cuanto más lo pensaba, más me doy cuenta de que es la actitud de los santos cuando te-nían que lidiar con sus propias cruces. No estoy de-fendiendo que la gente debe infligir dolor en sus vidas. Si tenemos problemas tratamos de resolver-los, si estamos enfermos vemos a un médico;

The Threshold.
shock many of us as we pose the following ques-
tions; Embracing it? Loving it? The more I
thought about it, the more I realize it’s the attitude
the saints had when they had to deal with their
own crosses. I am not advocating that people
should inflict pain in their lives. If we have prob-
lems we try to solve them, if we are sick we see a
doctor; and that is the rational we do. We all deal
with suffering that is unavoidable and inescapa-
ble. That is where Jesus was in his ministry. He
was true to his mission; He emptied himself and
did not avoid the cross so that I and you may be
saved. He came that we may have life and have it
abundantly. (Jn. 10:10) let us then embrace our
crosses to that we may change the face of the
world.
Ell Umbral.
(Juan
10:10), entonces abrazamos nuestras cruces para
que podamos cambiar la faz del mundo.

Imagine yourself 10 years into the future. As your
future self, imagine yourself looking back to the
previous decade. You can recall happy visits with
an isolated elder, or perhaps fulfilling times grocery
shopping with a middle-age person who can no
longer see. You realize that your service with a
Duet volunteer has led to some of the most enrich-
ing times of your life. Now—come back to the pre-
sent. Please make these “memories” a reality
by becoming a Duet volunteer! Call 602-274-
5022 or visit www.duetaz.org to RSVP for an up-
coming volunteer orientation or to request help.
Thank you!
