Dear Families,

Monday morning was a special time in the life of our 41 Prep students! It was wonderful to see their beaming faces (and a few tears). Many of our prep students have been “waiting for ages” for school to start. Thank you to the many helpers who organised the cuppa in the Community Centre. There was a great atmosphere in there.

On Sunday we celebrate our Opening of the Year Mass with our Parish Founders’ Day at St John’s in Mitcham at 11.15am. Ideally, every St James family would be in attendance! There will be a cuppa for parents and an icy pole for children following mass in the Coghlan Centre.

We are aware that you have been bombarded with numerous forms to be filled in and/or updated; ICT use, contact details, medical information, etc. It is essential that we have the most up to date information and permission available to our staff so that we can provide the best care for our students, your children. Please take the time to complete these ASAP.

With the hot weather this week, it's a good opportunity to reflect on our sunsmart practices;

• Wearing named sunglasses (this initiative was launched in term four last year)• Using sunscreen either applied at home or using your own roll on sunscreen• Always wearing hats when playing outside (no hat; no play)

School Marketing and Advertising: We are seeking volunteer walkers to distribute flyers advertising our Open Days to attract 2019 Prep enrolments. Please contact the office if you are able to assist us and gain some exercise at the same time!

Parent Information Evening Next Tuesday 13 February: This is a compulsory event for at least one parent to attend. The evening will consist of the following format:

• 7.00pm - Presentation by class teachers in classrooms - essential information related to your child’sschool year will be distributed and explained

• 7.45pm - Whole school address in the Community Centre• 8.15pm - Classroom presentations repeated

If you have more than one child at St James, you can attend two different classroom presentations. If you only have one child at St James then you may choose which classroom information session you attend.

See you on Sunday at Mass,

Dave Mutimer

Condolences Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ryan family –Eamonn, Lynette, Joshua (3W) and Oscar (Prep K) on the death of Eamonns mother, Elizabeth Ryan. May she rest in peace.

SCHOOL FEES FOR 2018 Thank you to the many families who have returned their 2018 School Fee Commitment forms and direct debit and Nab Transact forms. Any queries, please call Maree in the office 9874 1830. NEW STAFF

Hi everyone. In moving to St James Vermont, I expected to see a few familiar faces and realise a few connections to some families. It’s been remarkable just how many families I have a connection with, whether it be from my school days at St Leo’s, footy days at East Burwood or via my family members or mutual friends. I am married with 4 children; 3 daughters and a son. I support the mighty magpies and enjoy going for a walk or a run to keep fit and the occasional round of golf.

I was the Principal at Holy Trinity, Wantirna South for the past ten years and am looking forward to my time here at St James. I have already found our community to be very welcoming.

Hi I’m Cassie Pascoe and I am the new Year 3 teacher. I love to travel, finding new cafes with friends and being active. I really enjoy getting involved in a variety of sports and support North Melbourne in the AFL. I am very excited to be part of the St James community and am really looking forward to not only getting to know the students in 3P but all of the wonderful members of the St James community. I am looking forward to a great year!

My name is Revina Alford and I will be working as an LSO at St James on Thursdays and Fridays. I have recently been working at Vermont South Special School after completing my CERT III in classroom support. I enjoy working with children of all ages and am particularly excited that I will get to spend time in a number of levels at the school. I have 3 children -12 year old boy/girl twins and an 8 year old girl. We follow Richmond Football Club in the AFL and support the Magpies in the Netball. We also love travelling

around Victoria in our caravan. I have been coaching netball for 3 years and am currently coaching both my daughters’ teams in the local Whitehorse competition at Vermont South. Most of all I enjoy spending time

with my family and friends. I look forward to getting to know the St James community this year. Welcome to the 2018 school year! My name is Eileen Stewart and I am the new PE and Sports Teacher at St James. I am looking forward to getting to know all of the wonderful students and parents at St James. As usual we have many sporting events this year.

PRAYER SERVICE – Change of date!!! Year 3 will host the prayer service on Thursday 29th March at 2.30pm, not the 9th March as previously advertised as it is a school closure day. PARENT/GRANDPARENT HELPER LITERACY INFORMATION SESSIONS

How Children Learn to Read and Write

At St James in the junior classes (Prep -2) we have some parents helping us in the Literacy Block. In order to be able to do this you need to have attended the three Literacy Information sessions that are offered in first term. These sessions will help you to understand the way children begin to learn to read and write and the progression we would expect to see as children develop their literacy skills. These sessions are informative and allow for discussion. The sessions will also introduce you to the type of assistance you may be required to give, in the classroom, during the Literacy Block, in line with the knowledge gained of how children begin to learn to read and write. These information sessions are being offered at 9.00 am in the morning and then the same session is repeated at 7.00pm in the evening. You would choose morning or evening sessions. It is expected that you would attend three different sessions to be eligible to help in the classroom. If you are unable to help in the classroom but would like to come to the information sessions to learn more about how children begin to learn to read and write you are most welcome. If you have completed these three sessions previously you do not need to attend again to be able to help in your child’s classroom. In order to work in the classroom you will need to have a Working With Children Check and have completed the Volunteering process (see Newsletter 15/2/2017). This would need to be given to the school office before beginning to assist the teacher in the classroom. Unfortunately we are unable to have preschoolers in the classrooms during class learning time. If there are limited numbers registered for the evening sessions these will not go ahead. You will be informed accordingly if this affects you.

Parent Training Sessions will be held in the Multi Purpose Room The sessions will be 1 and a half hours in duration. Session 1 Tuesday 27th Feb (9.00am or 7.00pm Session 2 Tuesday 13th March (9.00am or 7.00pm) Session 3 Tuesday 27th March (9.00am or 7.00pm) Thank You, Terri Nugent (Literacy Leader) -----✂--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____ I will be attending the three morning sessions OR ____ I will be attending the three evening sessions (PLEASE TICK) Parent Name____________________________ Phone Number_________________ Email Address_________________________________________________________ Child’s Name and Grade_________________________________________________ Please return to Terri Nugent via the school office by Wed 21st Feb or email me at [email protected]

March

Friday 2nd March—Cinema Under the Stars

Welcome to P&F Food Days 2018!Welcome new families!

Just a few quick notes about St James P&F Food Days. Food Days generally happen 2-3 times a term this year on a Thursday or Friday.

The purpose of food days is to give the children a canteen experience, a special treat with a lunch they couldn’t normally have at school and to give parents a day off from making lunches! Yay for that!

Orders will be sent home in your child’s mail bag and will be due the FRIDAY before the Food Day. Return via class tubs or to the office. Spare order forms are always available atthe office should you misplace or not receive one.

include Pizza, Pies, Pasta, Chicken/fish and chips and Sushi Days and Subway Lunch Orders. In most cases the food is prepared by caterers or businesses off site and delivered just before being packed and distributed at school.

Sorry but NO change can be given and late orders can not be accepted.

Helpers are required (and are very appreciated!) on Food Days. For Subway lunch order days only a few are needed for a short time but for all others usually at least 10 from 9-11 both to help pack orders and sometimes prepare. Toddlers are always welcome!A Working with Children Check is required and you must have registered as a volunteer.

Any queries please contact me on 0403 976 575 or [email protected]

Thanks! Kylie Brooks-Verberne P&F Food Day Coordinator (Monet-4C Elodie-1D)
