SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY

We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebra on. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul’s le er to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God be-fore he endures his final confronta on in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us “behold the Lamb of God” before we hear the story of his final and greatest confronta on. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we—his Body through bap sm, the church—now bear his face. Él es el Siervo que Sufre, manso y callado ante sus captores y perseguidores; es la mismísima imagen del Dios invisible, sin em-bargo, no se aferrará a la igualdad con Dios antes de sufrir su en-frentamiento final en humildad. Isaías y Pablo nos ayudan a “ver al Cordero de Dios” antes de oír el relato de su mayor y úl mo en-frentamiento. Cependant nos lectures venant d’Isaie et de la lettre de Paul aux Philippiens clarifient ses qualifi-catifs pour nous. Il est le serviteur souffrant, humble et muet en présence de ses ravisseurs et persécuteurs; il est l’image même du Dieu invisible, et pourtant l’égalité avec Dieu ne sera accomplie pas avant qu’il n ait enduré sa confrontation finale avec humilité. Isaie et Paul nous aident: “Voici l’agneau de Dieu” avant que nous entendions l’histoire de sa plus grande et finale confrontation. “As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross.” MATTHEW 27:32

The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are given opportu-ni es to love our neighbor and help him “carry his cross”. These opportuni es aren’t usually big events; they are usually ordinary occasions like holding the door open for someone, helping someone carry their groceries or just listening to a friend. The most important thing is pu ng the other person’s needs before our own and not expec ng anything in return.
