Who We Are

St. James, Dundas, is a parish church of the Diocese of Niagara in the Anglican Church of Canada, itself an ecclesiastical province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. We are an active, diverse and creative spiritual community in the historic Valley Town of Dun-das, near Hamilton.

Weekly Services The community gathers each week on Sundays for: 8:30 AM ~ a said service of Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer

10:30 AM ~ a sung Eucharist using a variety of authorized liturgies with a broad spectrum of musical offerings

Monthly Services and Events

Third @ Four ~ Join us on most of the 3rd Sundays of the month

from September to May at 4:00 PM for a multi-generational and

creative experience with a focus on community and spirituality.

Stay for a pot-luck meal afterward, too!

Choral Evensong ~ Join us on the 2nd Sunday in the winter months

at 4:00 PM for what is essentially a service of reflection — of leav-

ing one’s self open that God may speak to us through the psalms,

readings, and canticles that form the core of this service. Forget

the ceaseless activity of daily life, for a time, and be still.

Sacred Circle Dancing ~ Join us on the 4th Friday of the month at 7:30 PM for a spiritually enriching evening of creative movement and dance.

Community Dinners ~ Healthy meals and fellowship are offered

free of charge for friends in need on the 4th Monday of each

month. Be sure to contact the office for further details. join us for

the meal and/or to help.

The parish choir of St. James ministers during the Sunday morning service at 10:30 AM from September to mid-June. It’s a welcoming and diverse community open to anyone who enjoys singing, learning about church history and culture through beautiful music, old and new. The Choir meets to rehearse in the base-ment Jefferson Room (outside entrance down the west wall down the memorial garden steps) on Thursday evenings, September to June, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, and then one hour before each service it sings. Contact the office, or speak to our Music Director, Richard for information.

We find hope in the promise made by Jesus ~ ”Behold, I am making all things new” ~ and work hard to promote many eco-justice issues both within and out-side church walls. Visit us at www.stjamesdundas.ca to find out what we’ve been up to and explore projects and initiatives we support.

In 2016 we have been extremely involved in settling Syrian Refugees. We collect and ship medical supplies to the Kurds in Iraq., stamps for Leprosy Canada, eye glasses for 3rd World countries. Local Initiatives: 8th Annual Coat Drive, Weekly Food Drive, Adopt–a–Family for Christmas, Community Dinners, Knit Group, Send a Kid to Camp, Provide Worship at 5 Retirements and Nursing Homes. We are a Green community and have earned our Gold Accreditation from the Diocese.

Our “Valley Town” of Dundas, Ontario has a long history as a home for and a support to visual artists. St. James seeks to embrace this aspect of our commu-nity with devoting its beautiful naturally-lit sanctuary to month-long exhibitions of visual art throughout the year. These are launched on the first Sunday of each month from September to April with viewings and receptions from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Through the summer the gallery features our own church family’s offerings.

On the 4th Friday of every month St. James also hosts an evening of

Sacred Circle Dancing gathering people of all ages and persuasions together

to explore connections between spirituality and dance.

Baptism ~ is a rite of entry into the church for both infants and adults — the sign of new life in Christ. Water is blessed and poured over the head of the person being baptized, they are anointed with holy oil, and named as Christ’s own in the name of the triune God. Marriage ~ is a rite to celebrate the love between two people amidst their family and friends and to ask God’s blessing on their relationship. Vows are professed, rings are exchanged, and the marriage is blessed. Confirmation ~ is a rite to mark a passage in one’s life whereby adults (young or old) affirm the baptismal promises their parents made on their behalf. The bishop prays for the person’s faith journey through the laying on of hands. Funeral ~ is a rite to celebrate and give thanks for the life of a person who has died. Prayers are offered for the deceased and for those who mourn, and the remains are commended into God’s keeping. Anointing of the Sick ~ is part of the Church’s Ministry of spiritual healing which complements the ministries of doctors, nurses and other medical practitioners.

Be sure to contact the office if you have questions or needs related to any of these transitions.

The community of St. James worships together regularly at a variety of weekly and monthly services. A family friendly space called “The Nook” is set aside for infants, and toddler at our 10:30 AM service. Our older friends often spend time with us in this area, before the service and after communion. Over the course of the church year we provide a fun filled church school for chil-dren ages 3 and up, during the 10:30 AM service. This gives them the opportunity to learn, listen to stories, do crafts, sing songs and play games with their friend. It happens in the Jefferson Room. We use “The Whole People of God” curricu-lum. Children begin in “the Nook”, are invited to the focus at the beginning of the service, then head to their space until communion, when they return to share the meal and head over to “The Nook” if they wish. We hope you’ll join us!

Children’s Choir ~ St. Cecilia Singers practise on Thursdays from

5:30PM - 6:30PM, and sings once a month during the 10:30 service. All children are welcome. Contact our Music Director, Richard Hansen for more information. Join us Wednesday mornings at St. James in the Dundas Room for our

Play ‘N Learn drop-in programme for baby’s and tots and their

caregivers from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM.

CHILD, FAMILY, AND YOUTH MINISTRIES Adult Education

Body and Soul ~ Tending to the body, followed by guest speakers, this

programme happens every Tuesday at 10 a.m. Please join our group.

Men’s Spirituality Group meets twice a month, sometimes just sharing

our stories, and sometimes using something a little more structured, like talk-ing about a book which sparks our interest. We have come to know and ap-preciate each other more deeply. If you’d like to join us, please do so, and see if this group might be helpful to you on your journey.

Study Group ~ Through out the year opportunities are offered to come

join us as we deepen our understanding of our faith . Watch the bulletin for specific information.

EfM ~ is how those who have experienced this program call it – short, of

course, for ‘Education for Ministry’. This isn’t a program for training clergy, but for educating and empowering the laity, the whole people of God. Most of our students say it’s a transforming experience. We’d be happy to tell you all about it.

Brief History St. James, Dundas, dates from 1838, when the Rev. William McMurray was appointed rector to both Dundas and Ancaster. Until 1843 the Dundas con-gregation worshipped in what was called “The Free Church”. The congrega-tion decided to erect its own building, which opened on Hatt Street for ser-vices in December 1843. Dundas became a separate charge from Ancaster in 1895.

During World War I, a factory next to the church was turned into a munitions plant, so the decision was made to sell the church and move to a different location. The foundation stone of the new building on Melville Street was laid by the Bishop of Niagara in July 1925.

This second church was gutted by fire in January 1978. The remodeled church, which you see today, opened for services in April 1980.

For a more complete history see “Fountain Come Forth, The Anglican Church and the Valley Town of Dundas, 1784-1963” by Richard Bertram Gilman (1963).
