GOD’S WORK

We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be minis-ters or priests, missionaries or charity workers, en-gaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct con-nection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). Why Register In the Church

Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not regis-tered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offer-ing envelopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it’s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Religious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we cannot issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and receive offering enve-lopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

On September 7th and 8th, 2018, the Diocese of Las Vegas will once again have a conference. This year's conference will be held at the South Point Hotel & Casino. This exciting and spiri-tual event is an opportunity to connect with our brothers and sisters from all across the Diocese. There will be inspirational speakers, presenters sharing with us information to help deepen our understanding and practice of the faith, exhibitors showing us the latest books, videos, and other materials concerning our Catholic religion, as well as, worship and prayer services with lively music.

If you would like to attend this conference, there are registra-tion booklets on the counter out in the gathering space. From June 2 - July 15 the registration fee is $75. From July 16 to the conference day it's $85, so get your registration in early. Our goal is to have at least 50 parishioners from St. James attending this conference. We hope we will reach this goal so that everyone will know that at St. James the Apostle, "HOPE GROWS HERE."

~~ Pastor’s Message ~~

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James,

A PASTORAL CORRECTION Those of you who were at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, July 22nd, heard something during the announcements at the end of Mass that caused confusion and brought forth more than a few questions. The statement was made in reference to the accidental spilling of the Precious Blood by Deacon James. The statement claimed that 1) the spot where the Precious Blood was spilled was now somehow more sacred, and 2) that anyone who would walk on that spot would have their sins forgiven. Please be advised that these are not teachings of the church by any means.

In reference to the section of the floor becoming more sacred due to the interaction from the accidental spilling of the Precious Blood is simply not true. All of creation is sacred, first and foremost, because it is created by God. That is why we are called to respect all crea-tion whether it be our environment or the human beings or creatures who inhabit it. We, as human beings, take the elements of God’s creation and, through our talents and abilities, make other things, either for good or for bad. Our entire parish campus was made by human hands for a sacred purpose, from the elements of God’s creation, and is sacred because of that. Conversely, things made from elements of God’s creation for a bad purpose are not sacred.

Now, let me address how our sins are forgiven. While the church teaches that our venial sins are forgiven when we ask the Lord for forgiveness or when we worthily come to the celebration of Mass, our mortal or serious sins, however, must be confessed by name and number within the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we can worthily receive the Holy Eucharist. In the event the Sacrament of Reconciliation is not available after a mortal sin has been commit-ted, one can make a sincere Act of Contrition and receive the Eucharist worthily, as long as he/she intends to seek out the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation as soon as possible. A pious act does not replace the grace and healing that occurs within the encounter of God’s mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

It is also a good practice to bring even our venial sins to the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation as well. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing, and confessing our venial sins helps us to be accountable even for our simplest failings which, if not tended to, can grow and become more serious or mortal sins. For example, getting angry behind the wheel is a venial sin, but if left untended, it can become a regular occurrence or even a “way of life,” and possi-bly turn into road rage, which is a much more serious sin.

I hope this pastoral correction has cleared up any confusion and answered any questions.

“WE CAN’T DO EVERYTHING, BUT WE CAN DO SOMETHING!” We get many requests from individuals and organizations and even parishioners who wish to promote things or want to sell things to help further the worthy causes close to their hearts. It would be nice to allow everyone access to our community, but that’s just not pos-sible. We could, literally, have someone different here each week promoting some cause or raising funds for charitable works. From

Bishop Thomas invites you to the annual Mass of Sending Forth for our seminarians as they prepare to return to the seminary for the Fall semester. The Mass will take place at Guardian Angel Cathe-dral, 302 Cathedral Way, Las Vegas, NV 89109, at 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 16, 2018. A reception will follow in Anderson Hall. We hope to see you there to welcome and pray for our new and existing seminarians as they continue their journey toward priest-hood.

my experience, I know that parish communities get frustrated and tire very easily from being asked to support so many differ-ent outside causes. I even get tired from having to ask for sup-port of the needs of our own parish and diocese!

And so, I now take this opportunity to remind everyone, even our parish family, that we simply cannot allow everyone ac-cess to solicit our parish family to support their worthy causes. We do limit any kinds of promotional activities to those events and organizations associated with our parish and/or dio-cese (e.g., Knights of Columbus, Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver, Women’s Auxiliary, bake sales, donuts, CSA, yearly Mission Appeals etc.). On occasion we do allow outside inter-ests to come here, such as the Holy Land articles which gives our parish family the chance to purchase religious articles not available elsewhere, while at the same time provides us a chari-table opportunity to support our suffering brothers and sisters in the Holy Land.

So, please do not assume my permission to sell items or pro-mote outside organizations on our parish campus. While I would love to give this permission to everyone, especially our children, it’s just not possible. As Blessed Oscar Romero once said, “We can’t do everything, but we can do something!” I believe we already do a lot of “something” here.

Thanks so much for your understanding and, especially, for your cooperation. It makes life a heck of a lot easier for me and lessens the frustration and anxiety of our parish family!

Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor
