The Celtic Way of Prayer A Spiritual Retreat led by

Celtic tribes of people inhabited parts of Western Europe, predating Christian history. They migrated to the islands of Great Britain

and Ireland where they embraced the Christian faith introduced by the expanding Roman Empire. Several significant characteristics of their spirituality have been reborn in modern Christianity throughout the world.

One aspect in Celtic theology incorporates a belief in the essential goodness of creation. All elements of earth and sky are expressions of God’s grace and goodness. We see God in the ordinary and everyday experiences. Not only is creation viewed as a blessing, it is regarded, in essence, as an expression of God. Through this ‘Book of Creation’ we may read the mysteries of God. Also incorporated is a belief that what is deepest in each of us is the image of God, at the heart of all people, not just the baptized or the chosen. Sin has distorted and obscured the image but not erased it. This has been referred to as “Original Blessing” rather than “Original Sin”.

Parts of well known St. Patrick’s Breastplate Hymn reflect these two major characteristics of Celtic theology.

I bind unto myself today

The virtues of the starlit heaven,

The glorious sun's life-giving ray,

The whiteness of the moon at eve’n,

The flashing of the lightning free,

The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,

The stable earth, the deep salt sea,

Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today

The power of God to hold and lead,

His eye to watch, His might to stay,

His ear to hearken to my need.

The wisdom of my God to teach,

His hand to guide, His shield to ward,

The word of God to give me speech,

His heavenly host to be my guard.

Tom Cashman has been a Spiritual Director for 27 years and has been on the staff of Seattle University, the Seattle School for Theology & Psychology and is active as a teacher and consultant in the Diocese of Olympia. His passionate commitment to revisiting and reclaiming the values of Celtic Christian Spirituality is lived out by his teaching, writing, speaking, and leading retreats and workshops in the Northwest, as well as four pilgrimages to Ireland and the UK where he loves to return to the Isle of Iona.

In this June 29th workshop on The Celtic Way of

Prayer, Tom will lead us in understanding Celtic prayer and provide times of silence being aided by contemplative music. We will have opportunities to write our own prayers in the

On Saturday, May 18, during a diocesan festival at St. Mark's Cathedral, the Diocese of Olympia launched an App! Folks were encouraged to "download the new Dio Olympia app and get the bishop on your phone." The free App is available for both iPhone and Android platforms. "It has been said that most communications electronically will be done through Apps, and at least we know that to be true at the moment," said Bishop Greg Rickel. "The development of this app is a deeper step into the social media world, a place we, as the Church, need to be and need to be competent in. I am very excited about this new addition to our ever changing and multifaceted communication strategy. "

Lay Weeders Unite

Summer is upon us and the weeds are taking over.

We need your help to keep St. Hugh grounds a

beautiful and spiritual place to visit and stroll. We are planning to contract

to have the lawns mowed and trimmed. But I think

we can help beautify the barked areas. They are

fairly low maintenance if we keep the weeds

under control by pulling, digging and refreshing the layer of bark. There are

several ways you can help: Adopt a Plot; Work Parties; Free Will Weeder; Landscape

Design.

Adopt a Plot

Would you be willing to monitor and maintain one of our garden areas: on your time, on

your schedule. Invite a friend to help out. This would especially help with West (front door) Gardens; North End Gardens: Driveway

Entrance Gardens; East Gardens; Memorial

Garden; Pathways.

Work Party or Free Will Weeder

If you would like to help out on a group work party or would just like to drop by as you have some time, dig in. Jim can help direct

your efforts.

Landscape Design

Three areas of our gardens need some

planning and design help: East Garden; North Garden; Center Parking Lot Island. If you have some ideas or especially any

training or experience in plant selection or

placement let Jim know.

Please contact Jim Neal by:

email [email protected]

phone 360-426-7320

face to face conversation.

Thanks for your help. Jim Neal

Weeder's Thoughts

I have raked the soil and planted the seeds

Now I've joined the army that fights the weeds.

For me no flashing saber and sword,

To battle the swiftly marching horde; With a valiant heart I fight the foe,

My only weapon a trusty hoe.

No martial music to swing me along,

I march to the robin redbreast song. No stirring anthem of bugle and drum

But the cricket's chirp and the honey bee's

hum. No anti-aircraft or siren yell

But there's Trumpet-creeper and Lily-bell.

With a loving heart and a sturdy hand, I defend the borders of flower-land;

While high over Larkspur and

Leopardsbane, A butterfly pilots his tiny plane;

But I shall not fear his skillful hand,

My enemy charges only by land.

Would those who lead nations in war and hate

But lay down their guns at some garden

gate, There; bury their bombs and their bloody

deeds, And join the grand army that's fighting the

weeds.

St. Hugh Bishop’s Committee, May Meeting

The meeting was a short one. It was too early in the month to have the financial reports ready to discuss and both Dick Moore and Linda Niles were absent. There wasn’t very much to cover.

Jim & Wilma attended the CADO Conference (Clergy Association of the Diocese of Olympia) at Suncadia, a resort near Cle Elm. The conference was hosted by the Diocese of Olympia and they had invited the Diocese of New Westminster to join them. Jim described it as a great opportunity to talk with the other priests about various issues. There were about 68 who attended from Canada and 70 from the Olympia Diocese.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Torvend will be presenting a class on Saturday, May 25th about Christian

Ethics which is required for Circle education. The payment will be issued from the Pearson Fund.

We have bids from two potential providers for yard maintenance. It was decided to get one more bid before making final decision. In the meantime paying $60 a mow was approved. Approval was given for Chuck to get a landscape water box for the “island”; estimated cost was approximately $30. The landscape sprinkler system needs care and maintenance. Jim & Chuck agreed to look at the sprinkler locations and decide what improvements should be made.

We have been informed that a letter nominating the Circle and signed by the Bishop’s Committee is required. Sunny distributed a draft for discussion. Sunny will finalize it and contact everyone for signatures so it can be submitted before the deadline of May 31

Hymn for a summer day

Maltbie Davenport Babcock, a minister in upstate New York at the turn of the 20th century, often walked near Niagara Falls to enjoy the view of Lake Ontario and the surrounding scenery. He’d tell his wife he was “going to

see the Father’s world.”

After Babcock’s death in 1901, his wife, Katherine, published a book of his writings, including the 16-verse poem “My Father’s World.” Franklin Sheppard set it to music in 1915, using two verses of text for each hymn stanza.

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears

all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought

of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,

the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair;

in the rustling grass I hear him pass; he speaks to me everywhere.

Barry and Vicki's Big Adventure

12 Oct. A good night's sleep. It was very

warm last night, but we opened the window and got a cool breeze which felt really good. Europe is experiencing record high temperatures this fall. We have had amazing weather our entire trip. A little snow when we left Zermatt, but then back to gorgeous sunshine. The temperature has been between 80-90 degrees for most of our trip. After a lovely breakfast buffet, we left for Avignon for the day to visit the Palace of the Popes. We drove into the walled city....very narrow streets and many of them one-way. We were relying on our GPS which is now working again thankfully. We must have missed a sign and turned into a street that was one-way, only we were going the wrong way and met a large tour bus coming toward us. We had nowhere to go, so Barry had to back up quite a way until we found a side street that we could slip into and allow the truck to pass. Then we turned in the right direction and followed the truck out of the street. I'm so glad Barry was driving because I am definitely challenged when it comes to backing up. Pedestrians, vehicles and structures would have been in peril if I had been behind the wheel! We continued a way until we found a parking garage and then left on foot to find the Palace of the Popes. The structure was huge and very interesting. We learned that the structure was built to house the Pope who was French, and decided to move the Papacy from Rome to Avignon. After touring the Palace, we walked through the gardens. We left Avignon at 3:00 pm and returned to Aix en Provence around 4:00 pm. Jean Maurice, a friend of Barry's from when Barry worked in Aix in 1980, picked us up at our hotel at 6:00 to take us to their home for dinner. They have a lovely home in a residential development a few miles outside of Aix. There Jean Maurice introduced me to his wife Marie Claude, Laurence his daughter, Joel her husband and their children Olivia, age 5 and Adrien, age 2. Barry, of course, knew Marie Claude and Laurence from his previous time in France but he met for the first time Joel and Laurence's children. It was amazing to me but Olivia looked so much like our granddaughter Marian when she was

young. It was another beautiful evening and we had champagne and canapes out on their patio. They had an American flag hung from the patio roof and seated Barry and me right under the flag. While we were enjoying our champagne and canapés, Olivia went inside and came out carrying a large wrapped package and presented it to me. They encouraged us to unwrap it. Jean Maurice and Marie Claude gave us a lovely tablecloth and napkins made in Provence. The embroidered design on the hem of the cloth contained two things representative of Provence....olives and cicadas. It is a beautiful set that I will treasure. Laurence and her family left and we moved inside for dinner. I was so looking forward to this dinner....to experience real French cooking from a real French housewife. Marie Claude is an excellent cook and the meal was unbelievable. The first course (which I thought was the complete dinner) consisted of shrimp, smoked salmon, lettuce, foiegra s and thinly sliced beef. It was my first time experiencing foie gras and I wasn't sure I would like it since I don't eat liver. This was delicious! The second course was a dish native to an area west of Marseille where Jean Maurice was born. It was a tuna steak, ground meat stuffed in calamari and rice, all smothered with a tomato-y sauce. As if we weren't stuffed by this time, then came a plate of fabulous cheeses followed by a platter of pastries and then a platter of fruit. And of course wine with each course. So my question is, how do the French women stay so thin? The meal was absolutely delicious and so memorable. Jean Maurice drove us back to our hotel around midnight so we can rest up for our day of sightseeing with them tomorrow.

13 Oct. I'm surprised I slept so well on such a

full tummy, but I did sleep like a baby. However, I didn't elect to eat breakfast as I still felt full from the previous night. While Barry went to breakfast, I read a little and then showered and got ready. Jean Maurice and Marie Claude picked us up around 10:00 am and took us to Rousseau and Trets. We stopped in Rousseau and had cafe au lait at a sidewalk cafe. Another

beautiful day and it was so pleasant sitting there. Barry took some pictures and movies. Marie Claude doesn't speak any English, so I was trying to use the French I learned in high school to converse with her. I also used my trusty English/French dictionary quite a bit. Jean Maurice drove out in the country so Barry could see the house that he and his first wife, Janet, had rented when they lived there for 6 months in 1980. From there we drove to the old part of Aix en Provence and walked down some ancient streets, from the 13th century. I am sometimes awestruck just thinking that I am standing where someone else stood 800 years before me. We had a light lunch at a sidewalk cafe and then drove toward the Mediterranean. We went through the town where Laurence, Joel, Olivia and Adrien live and then stopped at a beach and I picked up some sea glass. Marie Claude was intrigued by my fetish for sea glass, but then she got in the spirit and started looking too. We then drove to a small town west of Marseille and parked the car. We watched the locals play a game of Petanque. The game was sort of like horseshoes but with steel balls. We walked around the marina and then went for our dinner reservation. The restaurant was a favorite of Jean Maurice and Marie Claude and it specialized in seafood. We had a wonderful meal together and then as we were walking back toward our car, a big moon was shining on the Med and it was enchanting. We drove back to our hotel and arrived at 10:00 pm. We thanked them profusely for everything, invited them to visit us so we could return the hospitality and then bid them adieu. After a thoroughly pleasant day, we went to bed. Tomorrow we leave southern France for Versailles.
