FROM THE SCHOOL OF RELIGION

We will be closed today and January 1, 2017 for our Christmas and New Year holidays. Classes will resume at 10:45am on January 8th, and we will have our annual Christmas/Epiphany Pageant and Potluck Lunch in the school gym at 11:30am-12:30pm. Please bring a favorite family food and dessert to share. The School of Religion will provide paper goods, utensils, and drinks.

Income Tax Information The parish will be happy to provide an official 2016 state-ment of contributions for all those who need it, but to prevent needless preparation of statements for all parish-ioners, we are asking those who need them to fill in the form below and drop it in the collection. Statements cover all contributions which are identifiable—those made through the envelope system and Faith Direct. State-ments will begin to be processed toward the end of Janu-ary. Christmas Flowers Help make the Church beautiful for the entire Christmas Season by using the Christmas Flower en-velope, available in the back of the Church. Please take one and drop it in the collection basket.

From the Pastor Christmas has arrived! The Advent Season has zoomed by, except for our children, for whom every day before Christmas seemed like an eternity. For most of us, we never seem to have enough time to get ready for Christmas. But, we shouldn’t let this bother us. Advent is essentially about letting go and letting God: letting go of our expectations and letting God fill us with his expectations. The Advent season has been about preparing our hearts, as best we are able, to receive the gift that Jesus is prepared to give us this Christmas: the gift of his Father’s love. “Come to me,” Jesus says, “all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Jesus’ “yoke” is a God-centered life. His “burden” is our trusting God in all things, knowing that he loves and has given us his Son as our savior. The joy of Christmas is not something we can manufacture for ourselves. We do not produce it by saying so many prayers or doing so many good works. We say the prayers and do the good works because only in this way can we receive the joy that Jesus offers us at Christmas and, indeed, every day: the joy of abiding in the Father’s love with a serene conscience. May our loving God fill you with grace and peace at the birth of his Son, and may the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph embrace you with their goodness and joy! Yours in Christ, Father Walter

THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appro-priate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcend-ent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a rela-tionship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to re-spond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
