RECONCILED DIVERSITY A few years ago, during Rome’s quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecu-tions and celebrated the Holy Spirit’s “pentecostal work.” Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit cre-ates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uni-formity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit’s gift “reconciled diversity.” Pentecost’s rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday’s vigil and Sunday’s morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit’s work from creation’s beginning, through Jesus’ resurrection, into the church’s earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit’s gentle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled diversity.

DIVERSIDAD RECONCILIADA Hace algunos años, durante un verano tranquilo en Roma, el Papa Francisco tomó un día de descanso para pasar un tiempo en privado con algunos viejos amigos, cuyas identidades tomaron por sorpresa a los católicos italianos: protestantes evangélicos. LOS CATOLICOS NO PUEDEN SER MASONES Ocasionalmente, me topé con un obituario que describe al fallecido como un católico fiel y de toda la vida que estaba involucrado en la iglesia. Incluso pudo haber enseñado Catecismo o haber sido lector, etc. Un sinnú-mero de servicios se numeran. Por lo general, hay un rosario, una Misa fúnebre, un entierro cristiano y luego viene la patada... seguido ritos funerarios masónicos. Muchos Católicos, incluso católicos fieles, parecen no estar conscientes de que el catolicismo y la masonería son incompatibles. Muchos de esos católicos que se unen a logias probablemente nunca lo habrían hecho si hubie-ran sabido que estaba prohibido. La culpa de esa igno-rancia, creo, cae sobre todo en nosotros los clérigos por no educar a nuestros rebaños. La historia de la masonería es larga y complicada y se hace aún más complicada por el hecho de que es una sociedad secreta. Citando la nueva enciclopedia de Ad-viento, "Toda la masonería está llena de ambigüedad". CATHOLICS CANNOT BE FREEMASONS Occasionally, I come across an obituary that describes the deceased as a lifelong, faithful Catholic who was involved in the church. They may have even taught catechism or been a lector, etc. The times of services are listed. Usually there is a rosary, a Funeral Mass, a Christian burial and then comes the kicker…followed by Masonic funeral rites. Many Catholics, even faith-ful Catholics, seem to be unaware that Catholicism and Freemasonry are incompatible. Many of those Catholics who join lodges would probably have never done so if they had known that it was prohibited. The blame for that ignorance, I believe, falls mostly with us clergy for failing to educate our flocks. The history of Freemasonry is long and complicated and made more complicated by the fact that it is a secret society. To quote the New Advent Encyclope-dia, “all Masonry is full of ambiguity”. Many Catho-lics who join them think that they are joining a harm-less fraternal organization much like the Knights of Columbus or Knights of Peter Claver. Some Freema-son lodges probably do see themselves in that way. However, the oaths that are taken by members are clearly incompatible with Christianity and belief in the Most Holy Trinity. From 1738-1983, nine Popes have condemned Free-masonry and prohibited Catholics from involvement with it. Clement XII, Benedict XIV, Pius VII, Leo XII, Pius VIII, Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII, and St. John Paul II. For many years, under Church Law, Catholics who joined FreeMasonry were automatically excommuni-cated. The revised 1983 Code of Canon Law does not mention Freemasonry or any other society by name but says, “A person who joins an association which plots against the Church is to be punished with a just penalty” (Canon 1374). Many took this to mean that Freemasonry was no longer prohibited for Catholics. In 1983, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the approval of Pope St. John Paul II, published a clarification which states:

“the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been con-sidered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.”

If you had been involved with Freemasonry and can honestly say that you were unaware of this, then let your mind be at ease. For something to be a mortal sin you must know that it is a mortal sin. However, it would be best, now that you do know to politely back out of the organization. If you did know that it was a mortal sin and still chose to associate with the organi-zation, then as your spiritual father, I encourage you, for the sake of your immortal soul, to repent and seek God’s amazing mercy in the Sacrament of Pen-ance

There are no quick fixes to grief. No easy answers. Every expression of grief that wants to be felt and honored and given its space must be allowed in order to heal. If you or someone you know has experience the death of a love one (a spouse, friend, sibling, parent, child) you may want to consider participating in this five weeks Bereave-ment Program. You do not have to be a Catholic, there is no time limit as to when the person(s) died and there is no cost all are welcome.

A directed retreat is a form of silent retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola focusing on the personal prayer of the individual. There are no group activities or conferences other than the daily Eucharist and an individual daily meeting with the director. The retreatant spends about four hours in contemplative pray-er each day of the retreat. The retreatant may choose to do three or five days. Suggested donation is $350.00 for three days, and $475.00 for five days. Scholarship information is available upon request for those in need of assistance.
