ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION

As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are com-forting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ORACIÓN, LIMOSNA, AYUNO Y TENTACIÓN A medida que empezamos nuestro tiempo de ora-ción, limosna y ayuno, la lectura del libro del Deutero-nomio nos recuerda nuestro deber de ofrecer: “Dejarás los frutos en la presencia del Señor tu Dios, te postrarás ante él” (Deuteronomio 26:10). La lectura de la carta a los romanos nos refiere a nuestra oración, recordándo-nos que “La palabra está cerca de ti, en tu boca y en tu corazón . . . todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor se salvará” (Romanos 10:8, 13). Estas palabras son recon-fortantes, y nos animan a pedir a Dios aquello que nece-sitamos y nos ayuda en nuestra oración. DON’T FORGET EMBER DAYS THIS WEEK

This coming Wednesday, Friday, and Satur-day are the first Ember Days of the year. Hopefully you remember that last Advent the Bish-op published a decree on deepening our prayer and worship as Catholics. Part of that decree included the re-establishment of the practice of Ember Days in the Diocese of Lake Charles. Ember Days are days of fasting and penance. The history of Ember Days was explained in detail in my Pastor’s Message this past January 27. The first Ember Days of the year are the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the First Sunday of Lent.

All Catholics in the Diocese of Lake Charles are strongly urged to fast by only eating one full meal on these days. On Friday this fast-ing includes abstaining from meat. While not required, Catholics are encouraged to also attend the Holy Mass on those days. This Saturday, March 16th, the native son of St. Henry’s, Fr. Samuel Orsot, will celebrate an Ember Day Mass in the Extraordi-nary Form of the Roman Rite at 9:00am here at St. Henry’s. All are invited.

In his Letter accompanying the Decree, Bishop Provost said:

“The Church did not help construct the civilization of the last two thousand years by ignoring our behavior within society. We in the Church either transform society by witnessing to it or risk being absorbed by society through ac-quiescence. We in the Church either act as a pro-active force for good or retreat into irrele-vance. For these reasons, this decree seeks to im-plement in our diocese a program of prayer and worship that moves us more closely to being who we are as Catholics. In this way, God might more easily work through us to give good example to our neighbors and build up the kingdom of God. Of one thing I am certain: We cannot continue to live as passive bystanders. A change is necessary, and it begins with the way we worship and pray…

“The Devil and the forces of evil, which this iniqui-tous spirit unleashes, are not resisted with a ‘business-as-usual’ attitude, nor has what some would call a ‘Catholic-lite’ approach ever proved effective in facing challenges to the Church and the Gospel. When the disciples of our Lord complained that their attempt at combatting a demon was ineffective, they asked, ‘Why could we not drive it out?’ (Matthew 17:19, Mark 9:28). To which our Lord answered, ‘But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fast-ing’ (cf. Matthew 17:21, Mark 9:29).”

NO OLVIDEN LOS DIAS DE ASCUAS ESTA SEMANA

El próximo Miércoles, Viernes y Sábado son los primeros días de Ascuas del año. Esperamos que recuerden que en el último Adviento el Obispo publicó un decreto sobre la profundización de nuestra oración y adoración como Católicos. Parte de ese decreto incluía el restablecimiento de la prácti-ca de los Días de Ascuas en la Diócesis de Lake Char-les. Los Días de Ascuas son días de ayuno y peniten-cia. La historia de los Días de Ascuas se explicó deta-lladamente en mi mensaje de Párroco el pasado 27 de enero. Los primeros Días de Ascuas del año son el Miércoles, Viernes y Sábado después del Primer Do-mingo de Cuaresma.

Todos los Católicos en la Diócesis de Lake Charles son fuertemente instados a ayunar só-lo comiendo una comida completa en estos días. El viernes este ayuno incluye abstenerse de la carne. Aunque no es necesario, se anima a los Católicos a asistir también a la Santa Misa en esos días. Este sábado, 16 de Marzo, el hijo procedente de San Henry, el padre Samuel Orsot, celebrará una Misa del Día de Ascuas en la forma extraordinaria del rito romano a las 9:00am aquí en San Henry. Todos están invitados.

En su carta que acompaña el Decreto, el Obispo Pro-vost dijo: La Iglesia no ayudó a construir la civilización de los últimos dos mil años ignorando nuestro comporta-miento dentro de la sociedad. Nosotros en la Iglesia o bien transformamos la sociedad al testificarla o co-rremos el riesgo de ser absorbidos por la sociedad a través de la aprobación. Nosotros en la Iglesia actua-mos como una fuerza pro-activa para el bien o nos retiramos a la irrelevancia. Por estas razones, este Decreto busca implementar en nuestra diócesis un programa de oración y adoración que nos conmueva más estrechamente a ser quienes somos como Católi-cos. De esta manera, Dios podría trabajar más fácil-mente a través de nosotros para dar buen ejemplo a nuestros vecinos y construir el Reino de Dios. De una cosa estoy seguro: No podemos continuar viviendo como transeúntes pasivos. Es necesario un cambio, y comienza con la forma en que adoramos y oramos... El Diablo y las fuerzas del mal, que este inicuo espíri-tu libera, no se resiste con una actitud "normal" la que algunos llaman un "Católico-lite" nunca han de-mostrado su eficacia para hacer frente a los desafíos de la Iglesia y el Evangelio. Cuando los discípulos de nuestro Señor se quejaron de que su intento de luchar contra un demonio era inútil, preguntaron, "¿Por qué nosotros no hemos podido sacarlo?" (Mateo 17:19, Marcos 9:28). Por lo que nuestro Señor le contestó: "Pero este tipo no sale excepto con oración y ayuno" (cf. Mateo 17:21, Marcos 9:29).”

Fr. Taj Glodd is a native of Lafayette and was raised in Crowley. A 2002 graduate of Crowley High School, he attended University of Louisiana at Lafa-yette from 2003-2005 before entering the seminary for the Diocese of Lafayette.

He studied Philosophy at St. Joseph Seminary Col-lege in St. Benedict, La, graduating in 2009.

He studied Theology and received a Master of Divin-ity from Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corner, Wisconsin in 2014.

Ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ for the Diocese of Lafayette on June 21, 2014.
