CABBAGE ROLL DINNER SATURDAY DECEMBER 4

Do you enjoy St. Helen Festival cabbage rolls, but can't make it

out to the Christmas Bazaar this year?

The Scouts will be hosting a cabbage roll dinner from 4:30

-7 PM in the school gym. We will also have Bourbon Chicken

for sale, another festival favorite. It is six months until the festival and your next

chance for the delicious St. Helen cabbage rolls.

Ready to freeze packaging and to go is also available - you know you will

be tired of leftover turkey!

APOCALYPTIC SCRIPTURE READINGS

As we move closer to the end of

“Ordinary Time” in our liturgical season—that

which is not preparatory or celebratory—our

readings take on a heavy tone.

Rev. Dennis Hamm, S.J., writes that

“[w]hat we hear . . . is the message that hu-man history will not end without the universal

human recognition of Jesus as Lord of that his-

tory. Exactly when it will occur, what it will look

like—the data are not accessible.

Thus we move toward the end of the

Liturgical Year by stepping back and looking

at the big time picture. Our contemporary sci-

ence may well read the data correctly when

it pictures our minuscule human history as

framed by a Big Bang at the beginning and a

Big Crunch/Burnout at the end. Our faith asserts that this picture is in-

complete unless we recognize that the Crea-

tor of all has become fully manifest in Jesus of

Nazareth, especially in his death and resurrec-

tion, and that these events constitute a victory

of cosmic implications.”

In a fictionalized scene in the movie,

“Miracle,” about the 1980 US Olympic Hockey

team’s victory over the USSR, Coach Herb

Brooks frequently asks the US players “Who do

you play for?” and they always respond with

their college teams’ names. One evening af-

ter Brooks has pushed them to utter exhaus-

tion, he asks team captain Mike Eruzione who

he plays for, and Eruzione responds, “I play for

the United States of America!” and that is the

answer Brooks was looking for. Who do we

“play” for? We play for Jesus Christ, in all we

say and do. If we play well, miracles happen!

ST. HELEN ALUM IN THE NEWS AT CJ Donald MacLeod, CJ Class of 2022, St. Helen Class of 2018

Donald MacLeod has spent the last five months as an intern working in Dayton Children’s

IT department. He is part of a program at the Strategic Ohio Council of Higher Education

(SOCHE), where he is gaining valuable experience, while being paid for his work. Because the

SOCHE intern program is highly competitive, students must meet assessment criteria on their

employability evaluation in areas of teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and positive

attitude.

As a result of his evaluation, Donald was offered a position with Dayton Children’s IT de-

partment, where he works 6 to 15 hours per week. The flexible schedule allows him to still par-

ticipate in activities such as Eagle Pride marching band. “This has been a great opportunity,”

he said. “I have a paying job and am learning a lot. It’s been great working in different parts

of the hospital and learning how IT supports the hospital and seeing what tools are needed to

keep up to date on technology.”

Donald also assisted the SOCHE team in creating a promotional

video that would encourage other students to take advantage of

this program. According to Morgan Plummer, Enterprise Program

Manager at SOCHE, the video will also support SOCHE’s quest to

obtain federal grant money, including funds that would allow them

to expand the SOCHE intern program.
