Palm Sunday
From the Schumaker’s Bench
Well, we’ve made it to Holy Week, but if you are like me, it still doesn’t quite seem like Holy Week. The preparation for Palm Sunday wasn’t like normal. There weren’t two Gospel readings, there was no blessing of palms, there was no procession to the church signing Hosanna to the King of Kings. There was no add-ed fanfare to mass Sunday morning or to the vigil Saturday night except a few more ministers and incense. Despite the presence of the palms in the decorum and the reading of the Passion according to Matthew, for me it felt surreal. I just keep
thinking in all of this that I’m living in a dream, or an “end of the world” movie. I celebrate mass each day, and still feel somewhat guilty. Every day I ask the Lord while preparing myself for mass, “why do I get to receive you when they cannot?” “We all need this prayer.” That is what I hear. As odd as it is to celebrate mass as if many people were physically present, when only one, or a few, are present, we all need this prayer. The Eucharist, we as Catholic Christians believe, is the Sacrament of Christ himself. The outward (physical) sign of and invisible (spiritual) reality. It is the sign of Jesus’s pres-ence with us until the end of time, while at the same time actually being His physical presence with us. It is the Eucharistic Liturgy, the Mass, that makes this reality possible. Together, the Mass being Christ’s high prayer, his self-offering to the Father, and its ability to make Christ physically present are some of the beliefs we hold that allow us to say, with the Second Vatican Council, that the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our faith. Humanity needs the prayer of Christ because it is His prayer that makes our salvation possible. The Mass makes this offering really, truly, present with us in our time. For the Jewish people, especially at the time of Jesus, to remember something was much more than to just think about it. It was, in a certain sense, to actually live it out again. We can see this very clearly in the way in which the Passover meal is still celebrated today. That is our understanding of the Mass as a remembering of Calvary. So, we need this prayer always until Christ comes again.
To believe this has consequences. It requires action from us, action which almost always, so it seems, is contrary to our culture. Why are these actions required? St. James tells us in his letter that we are justified by faith and works (James 2:24), that our faith is shown by our works.

If someone were to tell us that the most important thing to them is their grandchildren, we would struggle to believe that if this person never went to their grandchildren’s events or games, of if they had no pictures on their walls of grandkids, etc. The same is true in our life of faith. I can tell people every day of my life that the Eucharist is the source and summit of my faith, that I truly believe this, but unless it is lived out in action, it is not very credible. This is one reason, even in the midst of our current pandemic, it is still important for me and all priests to celebrate mass. It’s another reason why I like the tabernacle in it’s current posi-tion in the sanctuary more than in the chapel. This is why we had the candlesticks and one of our monstrances refinished, because it shows that we have a faith that is alive, that we care about the mass and the sacraments. (I want to make clear that I am not placing any blame on anyone for letting items be in this condition. This is a reality of the material world, things wear down, they loose their luster over time. I am simply the priest here at the time they are in need of repair/refinishing.) This is also the reason I am livestreaming the masses that I celebrate, because tuning in and participating through spirit at a distance is also an outward sign of that living faith.
We also express this faith in other actions. Christ teaches us to follow him, to look out for those in need, those on the margins, those cast aside by cultural. We as a parish do this as a whole through our Bread of Life Food Pantry. I am constantly amazed by what happens in such a small space every Wednes-day. From the number of families served with the limited number of volun-teers, the compassion of God is shown to those in need. Through the physical hands of our volunteers, the community comes to understand that St. Grego-ry—Our Lady of Fatima cares and is there, and thus, that God cares and is there. We become an outward (physical) sign of God’s presence, pointing to God, as Mary does, the True Bread of Life.
That being said, I also can’t help but think how much more could be done with more volun-teers. As of now, it is my understanding that we currently have about 7 regular volunteers. I praise and thank God for the great work that they do and the commitment that they have. Imagine what could be done with 14, 21, 28, or more regular volunteers? Imagine if different groups took different Wednesdays? Junior high students one night, Knights of Columbus another night, bible study group another night, readers another, EMHC’s another etc., etc. The possibilities are endless really. We could rotate between groups so that each group only had to do one time a month rather than every week. With enough volunteers, we could be open more than just Wednesdays for 2 hours and still have monthly rotations.
These last few weeks many businesses have gone above and beyond to donate

and help out in this time of need. Unfortunately, we have had to turn a large amount of food away because of a lack of space. There are two ways to remedy this: 1) get a bigger space, or 2) give away food more frequently so that the storage space is emptied more quickly.
As we watch and pray with the Lord this week, His Passion Week, Holy Week, perhaps we can ask the Lord how he is asking me to serve those in most need. I do not know what his answer will be, but I do know this, he will answer.
I look forward to celebrating the Sacred Triduum in spirit with all of you. Know that I hold you all in prayer each day.
OTHER MUSINGS
This has been a challenging time for all of us, yet I trust there have been blessings in it also. I would like to invite us also to take some time in prayer this week, write down in a few sentences what have been the challenges and blessings have been in the midst of this pandemic. If you would, please then send them to me either in the mail or through email at [email protected] or through a Facebook message at our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/STGREG.OLF. I would like to share some or all of these responses in the next couple bulletins as a way to help keep us all connected.
BREAD OF LIFE FOOD PANTRY:
The food pantry at 11 Washington, Hart will be open the usual hours from 3-5 pm on
Wednesdays during the COVID-19 outbreak. Also, as you all know, toilet paper is
scarce. Please consider sharing at least one small package to drop at our church dona-
tion box as you have a prayerful moment in church. We are also in need of small/
travel size personal items, such as laundry soap, dish soap, toiletries. If you have any
questions, feel free to call the office or call Jane Beaudoin at 231-873-5024.
