LETTER FROM THE RECTOR

Dear All

This is the last parish letter I shall write to you. And the last one I

shall ever write, I imagine.

I want to end by saying a word of thanks, then a word of warning

and finally a word of faith.

A word of thanks I have enjoyed my time with you all. It has made a happy ending to my long years in the ministry. This is mainly due

to working with highly dedicated people in the leadership of our two

churches whom I have come to admire deeply. I profoundly thank

all of you who have held office and give you my prayers and best

wishes for the future. Also I have felt accepted and loved by the two

congregations at large. We have together done a lot of hard work and had a lot of fun. So thanks for that. Finally both villages have a

strong community spirit and I am grateful for the co-operation with

community minded people my job entails. I much admire what you

do too and wish you all the best.

A word of warning In nearly 40years of parish work I have seen

the notion of attending church be relegated from a strong call on

many people’s lives to an also-ran, coming in at the tail-end of a

race won by work, family, leisure, sport, shopping and the rest. This

is true, even of those who would reckon themselves to be nailed-on

Christians. I regard this as dangerous. The importance of giving serious worship to God as a priority is vital. God is no fool. “Do not

be deceived. God is not to be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

(Galatians 6:7) Our modern drop-in when it pleases me Christianity

is a mockery. Don’t do it.

A word of faith I am still a believer. That means more than you

think. Bismark said “If you like sausages and laws, don’t go to see

either of them made.” If you want to believe in God don’t become a

clergyman. At my first ever clergy meeting a long retired vicar spoke

to me as the new curate over the coffee. “How many souls do you

think you will save in your ministry?” he said. I replied “Maybe twenty”, deciding to be conservative. “You’ll do well if you save one.”

He said “and that’s your own.” Well, I am stilled thrilled at the call

to believe in God. I believe He exists and I give Him my all from a

joyful heart. I am ceasing to run parishes but I am going to take St

Paul as my mentor when he writes “But one thing I do, forgetting

Page 8: St Giles and Shipbourne NEWSLETTERshipbourne.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/news-oct2016.pdf · 2016-10-03 · SUNDAY 16th 8.00am Holy Communion at Plaxtol Church 9.30am Parish Communion

what is behind and straining on to what is ahead, I press on

towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me

heavenwards in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)

Best wishes

Andrew

CHURCH NOTICES

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW RECTOR

Do you have any ideas of the qualities you would like to see in our new Rector and what you would like him/her to do? Come and share your ideas with the Churchwardens

at an informal meeting on Wednesday 12th October at

8pm at St Giles.

As you will have heard, Andrew Procter is retiring and we have

started the process to find the right person to replace him.

Whilst no one can be appointed until Andrew and Elizabeth have moved out of the Rectory, the churchwardens for Shipbourne and

Plaxtol are working with our Archdeacon, Clive Mansell, on the early

stages of finding our new Rector.

This process is likely to take some months, but please be re-assured that our church services will carry on as usual and will be taken by

members of the clergy, both retired and from other parishes.

We have learnt that, as the Rochester Diocese, like much of the

Church of England, is short of money, it is likely that the person

appointed will live in the Rectory in Plaxtol, but probably have to devote two days a week to the work of the Diocese rather than being

full time with us.

We have to prepare a Parish Profile, which we will send to anyone

interested in applying for the role. As there are a lot of parishes looking for new vicars at present, this will need to fully inform

potential applicants about the villages, the area and what goes on

Page 9: St Giles and Shipbourne NEWSLETTERshipbourne.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/news-oct2016.pdf · 2016-10-03 · SUNDAY 16th 8.00am Holy Communion at Plaxtol Church 9.30am Parish Communion

and what facilities there are, and demonstrate what potential there

is for growing the congregations in both parishes.

In addition, we would like your input on the kind of person you

would like to see as our new rector, and what you would like them to do that would enrich our lives in Plaxtol and Shipbourne.

Please come along to the meeting to share your ideas with the

churchwardens for both parishes and help us to find the right

person to lead the two churches in the Benefice. Viv Packer and Paul Britton

THANK YOU! ST GILES’ SHIPBOURNE SUMMER FAIR

For once the weather was kind to us on August Bank Holiday

Monday and Shipbourne Common transformed into a truly

quintessential English village fete. With the brilliant Sevenoaks and

Tonbridge Training Band, the return of the popular dog show (which seemed to go on for longer than Crufts), busy BBQ, beer and pimms

tent, hay-bales, cheerful stalls, children’s Roald Dahl fancy dress

and afternoon tea and cakes, the Common was buzzing and the

perfect place to spend the afternoon.

The good weather reflects the great sum of funds raised on the day – after expenses the Fair raised in the region of £3,600 for St Giles. It

just shows what we can do when the sun decides to shine!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped out and to Fairlawne for

their help at what is a very busy harvest time for them. We look forward to thanking everyone at drinks on Friday 18 November,

7pm-9pm at Shipbourne Village Hall.

Thank you!

SHIPBOURNE WI The first meeting after the summer took place on Wednesday 14th

September when members met to discuss future events, both in our own WI, and in the District. This was followed by a talk, “Without

Reserve – Tales from Behind the Scenes in the Antique Trade.”

Mrs Janie Ramsay first ran her own antique shop in Tunbridge

Wells, and then pursued a very successful career at Sotheby’s.

.Janie’s lively presentation with her wide knowledge and many ‘tales’ gave us a good feel for the vagaries of the antique trade.

The meeting finished, as usual, with a delicious tea.

The next Committee Meeting is on 5th October, and the main meeting on 12th October when the talk will be “The Flemish Weavers

in Kent”.

FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR You will probably be aware of national concerns about the

inadequacy of Mental Health Services for children and adolescents. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made clear their support

for improvements in this area of health provision.

For many years I have attended meetings of Kent’s Social Care and

Health committees where we have interrogated various Health

officials on the long waiting lists for treatment and expressed our concerns about the poor quality of the service.

I am very pleased indeed to tell you that K.C.C. itself is now charged

with providing the service improvement programme to mobilise a

unified whole system, linking the pathway of provision between the emotional wellbeing Early Intervention Service and more specialist

provision for children with more serious mental health problems.

This is a huge programme of work, which should transform the

service, and it should be warmly welcomed.

With best wishes, Valerie Dagger, Kent County Councillor.

SHIPBOURNE FARMERS’ MARKET After the late spring and wonderful summer we’ve all enjoyed in

2015, the summer is well and truly over when it comes to what we are eating. But the bounty of the year’s incredible harvest is now

with us so it’s the month to rediscover the delights of colder weather

eating with all the wonderful ingredients at our disposal. And where

better to find the best food around than at Shipbourne Farmer’s

Market?

October has the best of everything. – late varieties of soft fruit, all

types of hard fruit,. onions, leeks, beetroot, carrots and tomatoes

are all full of flavour at this time of year whilst the wonderful array

of squashes and pumpkins offer so much more for the cook than

merely lanterns for Halloween. Try them baked with cream and spices or in risottos and curries. Root vegetables such as parsnip,

swede and celeriac are all wonderful roasted or mashed and perfect

with new season’s game. Use them in soups, stews, bakes and

pickles for rich seasonal colour and taste. Wild mushrooms are

plentiful before the frost comes in so make the most of them now –

they are perfect partners for seasonal game. Cobnuts, walnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts are all ripening – try them now when they

are ‘wet’ and discover a whole new intensity of flavour. Use in

autumn salads or toasted with fruit compotes or meringues for

impact.

Make sure you don’t miss out on all the best local apples and pears. The later ripening varieties are good for keeping so you will be able

to enjoy from now until next summer. Make into pies, crumbles and

cakes or try baked with spices and brown sugar. Who needs

imported varieties when we have the best in the world here at home

in the Garden of England?

As the sea temperature drops, fish just gets better and better. Sea

bass, haddock and Dover sole will be fishing well. Scallops, prawns,

crab, lobster and oysters make perfect autumn eating. Remember

the better the quality of the fish, the simpler it needs to be cooked.

Smoked fish is great at this time of year – try smoked haddock in a creamy chowder or hot smoked salmon in a winter salad or

October 1st sees the start of the pheasant-shooting season but early

birds can be expensive so try partridge, grouse, wild duck and

rabbit. All are excellent partnered with autumn greens and creamy mashed roots. Mother Nature really is very clever and ensures that

the season’s finest ingredients all go so well together!

Page 19: St Giles and Shipbourne NEWSLETTERshipbourne.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/news-oct2016.pdf · 2016-10-03 · SUNDAY 16th 8.00am Holy Communion at Plaxtol Church 9.30am Parish Communion

We had a French TV crew at the market last month. They came to

investigate vegetarian and vegan food (prepared by Jane of Fat

Carrot). They were captivated by the unique use of the Church as a

Farmers Market and spent 2 hours filming that as well. In addition, the National Churches Trust, which helps fund Church repairs,

highlighted Shipbourne Farmers Market in their annual review as

Number One of their ‘50 Things to do in a Church’ to illustrate what

‘tremendous asset Churches, chapels and meeting houses are to the

communities throughout the UK’.

Volunteers required at Shipbourne Farmers Market

Although we just have sufficient help each week to set up and take

down the market, we are hard pressed to cope during the holiday

period. If you could spare an hour at the beginning or end (or preferably both) helping us set up and take down the market we

could create a rota and so not to rely on the same band of

volunteers week in and week out. If you have marketing and or

social media experience in a retail environment we would also love

to hear from you.

Please call Bob Taylor 01732 833976 or [email protected] if you

can help us.

COOKERY CORNER

SMOKED HADDOCK POTATO GRATIN

I’ve always loved pommes dauphinois – sliced potatoes cooked with

garlic and cream, and one day I thought I’d try it layered with

smoked haddock. It’s a marriage made in heaven – an easy take on

a fish pie that makes a great winter supper dish (I think Rick Stein

does something similar with Abroath smokies)

Serves 6 / Prepare 15 minutes / Cook 1 hour

1 kg (2 lb) smoked haddock fillets

450ml (3/4 pint) semi-skimmed milk

2 fresh bay leaves

1.2kg (3 lb) floury potatoes such as Maris Piper, peeled and thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, crushed

25g (1oz) butter

300ml (1/2pint) carton double cream

salt and freshly ground black pepper

the haddock in a pan, add the milk and the bay leaves and bring to the boil. Poach gently for 5 – 6 minutes until just

cooked through – the flesh should just flake but not fall

apart. Drain off the cooking liquid and reserve. Flake the

fish, discarding the skin.

2. Layer up the sliced potatoes and flaked fish with the garlic

and plenty of seasoning in a well-buttered 1.7litre (3pint)

shallow ovenproof dish, ending with a neat layer of potatoes.

Dot with butter and pour over the reserved cooking milk and

cream.

3. Bake in the oven for 50 – 60 minutes until the potato is

tender and the top golden and crisp. Cover with foil if the top

gets too brown. Serve with a green salad or frozen peas.

SHIPBOURNE SCHOOL NEWS Everyone came back from well-deserved holidays on Monday 5th of

September. Currently, the whole school is working on Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr Fox'. We were lucky enough to have a real fox visit the

school, and then a hedgehog from the wildlife animal rescue centre

in Sevenoaks!

A very warm Welcome to all our new reception children who have

settled in very quickly and already staying all day. Some children have been to Horton Kirby on a geography field trip studying rivers,

and how they flow.

Our pupils in Years 2 and 3 continue to use the swimming pool at

Carroty Wood each week. Year 6 are working with some Year 7s from Hugh Christie (forging links with the secondary school) which

is very good for transition. Some year 6 children took the secondary

transfer tests the first week back.

The Harvest festival will be at 1.30pm on Friday 14th October at St

Giles's church.

Finally, If you have children due to start school in September 2017

and wish to visit the school, several dates have been planned for

prospective parents.

Please phone the school office 01732 810344 to book a place. Stavros Martis

THE GARDEN SHED At the time of writing the garden is suffering from a long spell of dry

weather and high temperatures and as a result the plants are also suffering. For some, this will help to ripen their growth and get

them ready for winter, but for others it will put them under stress,

causing wilting and possible death. Any plants showing signs of

unhappiness can be helped by giving them a really good watering (at

least a bucketful) and repeat this for a few days. Of course, by the

time this comment is read, sufficient rain may have fallen, and the plants will be back to normal.

October is the recommended time to plant evergreen trees and

shrubs, as the soil is warm enough to allow their roots to grow and

establish before the winter. At the time of planting it is important to complete the job with a good watering; this will settle the soil round

the roots. Staking the trees or shrubs will give them support and

prevent them rocking in the wind; a mulch of bark or wood

chippings will hold in the moisture and stop any weed growth.

Tender plants like Dahlias can be carefully lifted (after the first frosts have killed off their top foliage), the stems cut back to where

they are solid and the soil gently removed from the tubers; any

damaged parts need to be discarded. The tubers then can be

stored in dry material (wood shavings, chipped bark or even

newspaper) and placed in a dark, frost free area until mid February.

Of course, tubers can be left in the ground, but there is the risk that frost, excessive wet and slugs could affect their survival. A good

layer of mulch over the root area can give them added protection.

To get tender fuchsias, canna lilies, geraniums and other semi-

hardy plants through the winter they will need to be lifted, put into

pots and placed in an area where they will get some light and yet be frost free. Very little watering will be needed – just enough to stop

them drying out.

The Kaffir lily (Schizostylis) is a lovely late autumn plant which

flowers with carmine, pink or white blooms, and looks rather like a

small gladiolus, growing to about 45cms (15ins.) high. It is clump forming and enjoys a sunny moist position that is fairly well

drained. The plant has a fleshy root system which is vulnerable to

drying out. There are several good varieties, Schizostylis coccinea

‘Alba’ has white flowers, S.c. ‘Mrs Hegarty’ has pink and is later

flowering than the others, S.c. ‘Sunrise’ bears large soft pink blossoms, S.c. ‘Viscountess Byng’ has blooms that are bright red.

As the foliage dies down in the autumn, and does not reappear until

the summer, marking the site with a stick will ensure the plants will

not get damaged when spring planting is being done.

Do enjoy the autumn in your garden.

LOCAL HISTORY

‘HOW THE VANES CAME TO SHIPBOURNE’ In the fifteen and 1600’s it was none too easy to ‘keep ones head’ in

a crisis. With the dissolution of the monasteries in 1530 the manor

lands of Shipbourne were granted to Sir Ralph Fane who owned

Hadloe Place. The redoubtable Ralph had been knighted in 1544 but

was found guilty of High Treason and executed 1552. With no sons to inherit his property, Hadloe-place along with his Shipbourne

estates – including the Manor of Puttenden – were passed to his

kinsman Henry Fane of Hadlowe.

Henry was a committed Puritan and Member of Parliament. Also

sentenced to a traitor’s death - for his involvement with rebels in 1554 - he lost his lands but fortunately not his head; he was soon

pardoned and recovered his property. On his death in 1580 this

passed to his son Henry who in turn passed it onto his son, later to

be known as Sir Henry Vane the Elder. It was he who changed the

Fane surname back to the medieval spelling of Vane.

In 1611 Henry was knighted by James I, travelled and mastered

several languages, was elected to Parliament, bought himself

positions at court and was made Secretary of State in 1620. After

buying himself the position of an Officer in the Household of the

Prince of Wales, and serving his Prince, he returned to his previous job as Treasurer.

An educated and intelligent man, he was an able administrator who

took good care of the King’s finances, and himself became a

property developer. In 1626 he bought Raby Castle and Estates

including Barnard Castle, for £18,000, a massive amount of money in those days.

Although, in his private life, he was known as a fair landlord to his

tenants, a good husband to Frances D’Arcy and a very caring father

to his many children, he was not universally liked as he was an

Page 25: St Giles and Shipbourne NEWSLETTERshipbourne.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/news-oct2016.pdf · 2016-10-03 · SUNDAY 16th 8.00am Holy Communion at Plaxtol Church 9.30am Parish Communion

ambitious, bumptious character who was forever changing his

alliances usually with a view to improving his advancement or own

finances.

Appointed by Charles I as Ambassador Extraordinary to the Low Countries, Sir Henry then became a member of the Privy Council in

1630. At about the same time he also bought the mansion at Fayre

Layne in Plaxtol Parish along with the Wrotham lands belonging to

it for the sum of £4000 from Sir George Chowne, selling his

ancestral Hadlow estates to finance it and several other local properties. Moving his entire family into Fayre Layne he then set

about rebuilding the mansion and improving the gardens.

In 1640 King Charles I appointed Sir Henry Secretary of State again.

However, to his dismay he soon lost his lucrative positions in the

Court when he was suspected of being complicit in some way in Lord Strafford’s plot against the king.

Nevertheless, he kept his head and survived the Civil Wars,

remaining a Member of Parliament for Kent after the king himself

was beheaded in 1649. In 1654, shortly after Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Sir Henry Vane the Elder died

aged 66, thousands of pounds in debt having over-reached himself

in his ventures.
