ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN APRIL 15, 2012
MESSAGE TO ST. GABRIEL PARISH FAMILY
The grace, peace and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you!
HE IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!!
Prayer For The
Second Sunday of Easter
Jesus, Savior,
We stand in awe at the mystery of your dying and rising.
We wonder at the depths of your love for us.
May all peoples of the earth
receive the good news of your gospel
and may we live in the joy of Easter life.
We sing with all creation: Hail, O Light of Christ!
Welcome, Risen Lord! Amen.
This week is the first week of the great feast of Easter, a time to rejoice in the new life we have received through the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus. It’s a time for joy and celebration and also a time for reflection on the meaning of the Easter
sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For the newly baptized especially, this is a time to reflect on “the
mysteries”, an ancient term for the sacraments.
When we were baptized, we were plunged into the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. This first sacrament
establishes the motif of our whole lives. We are continually called to die to sin and rise to fuller life in Christ. When our
life on earth comes to an end, the community recalls our baptism at the beginning of the funeral rite, as they celebrate our
final embrace of death and resurrection.
From start to finish, our life in Christ is marked by dying and rising. And it is our faith in the resurrection that gives us the
courage to embrace death again and again. As Peter’s preaching reminds us, God overcame the evil perpetrated by those
who crucified Jesus. God can overcome the evil in our lives too. God’s power even destroyed the power of death and raised
Christ to new life, so we know that the little deaths we endure can also lead us to new life.
We might well echo the words of the psalmist: “You will show me the path to life, fullness of joy in your presence, the
delights at your right hand forever.” - Lawrence Mick, Liturgist
THANK YOU
Again we want to say a very sincere thank you to all of those who participated in any way in making our Triduum and
Easter celebrations so beautiful and meaningful. We are so blessed at St. Gabriel to have so many dedicated and gifted
ministers who are always so ready to use their time and talents to make our special days and celebrations so meaningful
and joyous! This is for, not only our liturgical ministers, but also for those in the RCIA, Baptism Ministry and PSR who
prepared those to be baptized and those to be received into the church, those who prepared our grounds, cared for the plants
in church, decorated the church, prepared the reception after the Easter Vigil and took responsibility for any other of a
multitude of tasks. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful generosity.
In the Peace of the Risen Christ,
Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron
Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina Saturday, April 21, 2012 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
This prayer workshop is a repeat of one held during Lent and very favorably received. It will introduce the
method of Centering Prayer. Through this practice of silent prayer we develop a deeper relationship with
God by opening our whole being to God’s presence and action within us. The workshop will conclude with
an experience of Lectio Divina (praying the Scriptures). The presenters are Vivien and Edward Michaels who have been
the local coordinators of Contemplative Outreach for the last 10 years. There is no cost for participation.
Please sign up on the sheets on the entrance tables around the Church so we may get an estimate of the numbers
who plan to attend.

Living the Gospel During this grace-filled Easter season, what steps
can you take to allow the resurrection of Jesus to
give you “new boldness and courage to believe,”
and to share this good news with others?
Congratulations Andre’ Shelby, Jr. on Alpha and Beta Honor Roll, 3.95
GPA, in top 5 of class! Keep up the good work!
Today was once called in Latin “Dominica in albis,” or
“Sunday in White,” because the church was full of newly
baptized Christians wearing their white baptismal
garments. Another old title, best forgotten, is “Low
Sunday.” There’s nothing low about this festive Sunday
in Easter, the eighth day since the first “Alleluia” rang
out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a symbol
of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the seven-day
rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many
baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of
our calendar are always extended for eight days, called
an “octave.” In a way, this means that this first week of
Easter is really considered to be one great day. This
octave day of Easter sees the best features of Easter still
vibrant: joyful alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere,
sprinkling with water, and a lavish table where the Lord
gives us himself as bread and wine.
For Orthodox Christians, today is the Easter feast,
since their tradition requires that the Christian Passover
cannot begin until the days of the Jewish Passover are
ended. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Still Point Theatre Collective/St. Gabriel Collaboration
April 15, 2012
Hello to the St. Gabriel Community! I am the Founding Director of Still Point Theatre
Collective, a Chicago-based community of artists who use theater to educate, inspire, and
challenge our communities to action. At a NOCERCC convention in February of 2011, I heard
Fr. Doug and Sr. Kathleen share the modern day resurrection story of how all of you in the St.
Gabriel community had come together to rebuild after the Katrina floods destroyed your church
and your homes. I was so moved by the presentation. I found myself mulling over the idea of
creating an original touring play so that people all across the country could have the opportunity
to be inspired by your story as well. The idea stuck with me, and so I contacted Fr. Doug and Sr.
Kathleen to discuss it. They were very supportive.
Today we formally begin our journey together, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I will be getting
to know you better as I begin interviewing members of the church in coming months to create
the script. If you have any questions at all about the project or about Still Point Theatre
Collective, or if you would just like to come say hello, I will be available after today’s mass. I
will also have a sign-up sheet at the table for those who are interested in being interviewed. I am
so grateful to Fr. Doug, Sr. Kathleen, and to all of you, for allowing me the privilege of telling
your story.
Sincerely,
Lisa Wagner-Carollo
