13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.” (Galatians 5:13)

We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of free-dom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

Flowers: Anyone who would like to

donate fresh altar flowers on a certain

weekend in memory of a loved one or

for a special occasion (birthday, wed-

ding, anniversary, etc.) may do so by

contacting the parish office at least two

weeks prior to the event. You can

choose to honor your loved one with either the large Altar

Arrangement for $100, the (2) Tabernacle Arrangements for

$50 each, or the Medium Lectern Arrangement for $50. For

more information or to reserve a weekend to donate Altar

Flowers please call the Parish Office at (504) 282-0296.

A church building is a special

place calling for special behav-

ior. While the church is our

home and we should feel com-

fortable there – indeed, the

church (small “c”) is a gathering

place for the Church, the people

of God (capital “C”) – that

doesn’t mean that anything goes.

Your actions in church show re-

spect for God and for the com-

munity that gathers there. If you are stopping by the

church to pray, even just for a moment, your actions

should respect the place and its purpose.

Spit out your gum, turn off your cell phone, check that you’re appropriately dressed and make the most of the precious opportunity to step away from the ordinary and into a sacred space and time. If you are in the church for Mass and you wish to go to communion, remember that Catholics are required to fast for one hour before re-ceiving the Eucharist. This ensures that we are “hungry” (at least symbolically) for the Eucharist and that we show respect for the Body of Christ. The Eucha-rist is real food, but it is not ordinary food, and thus we don’t mix it in with bites of our ordinary food and drink. Snacking or chewing gum distracts us from the sacred fast that prepares us to receive the Body of Christ. So there’s one more reason to lose the gum.

In your prayers, please pray for the Repose

of the Soul of Raymond Johnson. He was

buried from our Parish on Tuesday, June 25,

2019 at 10:00am. May his soul rest in the

peace of Christ forever.

“For I was hungry and you gave me

something to eat, I was thirsty and

you gave me something to drink, I

was a stranger and you invited me

in. I needed clothes and you clothed

me, I was sick and you looked after

me, I was in prison and you came to

visit me.” ~ Matthew 25:35-40

During the months of August 2018 thru May 2019, Deacon

Uriel lead a group of volunteers from St. Gabriel Church in

feeding the homeless at the St. Jude Community Center. Our

group meets every third Saturday of the month to feed over

100 hot meals that are cooked on site.

Clothing and the toiletries donated during the 2019 Lenten

Fish Fry were distributed to the those in need at that time.

If you would like to volunteer to feed the homeless at St.

Jude Community Center, our group will meet again on the

Third Saturday in August at 10:30am. For more infor-

mation see Deacon Uriel or Mrs. Barbara Hornsby.

July 1-5, 2019

gency number. The voicemail in the Parish Office will

be checked daily.

ebrated July 1-8, 2019. Daily Mass will
