I hope you have had an enjoyable summer. The heat and hu-midity we experienced in the Northeast made things a little uncomfortable but could not dampen our spirits as we an-ticipate some exciting yet challenging months ahead at the Prep. Most noteworthy perhaps is the fact that we are now officially moving forward with our comprehensive master plan for major improvements to our facilities. (See page 30 for the story on the June Groundbreaking Ceremony.) At the same time we continue to explore new and different ways to win the ongoing “battle of the budget” (which is now over $22 million) while handling more and more requests for stu-dent financial assistance. Suffice it to say, the Prep continues to operate on all cylinders these days.

Thankfully, the Prep remains on very solid ground enroll-ment-wise despite the downturn in the economy last year, and continues to be the largest private, non-diocesan, Cath-olic high school in the country with more than 650 freshman students coming this fall and nearly 2700 students enrolled overall. And they continue to achieve. More than 99% of the seniors go on to college each year, and the members of this past June’s Class of 2010 will be attend-ing many fine colleges and universities this fall (see the back cover for more on this). Three of our 2010 graduates were accepted and will attend the United States Military Acad-emy at West Point (this is a tremendous accolade for the Prep) while two others will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. And our academic and extracurricu-lar programs continue to excel. (You will read about many of our student programs and activities in the following pages. I think these stories will make you feel very proud.)

As you probably know, last October we concluded our 150th Anniversary Year celebrations with a wonderful reunion at North 6th Street in Brooklyn where nearly 500 alumni and friends came back to visit and “rally-in-the-alley” once again. It was a great event and provided us with a fitting closing for our Sesquicentennial.

As far as our capital improvement project is concerned, with the economy taking a downturn last year, the school decid-

ed to “push-back” the timetable a bit, although we recently completed the Phase I “infrastructure” improvements to our heating, air-conditioning, and mechanical systems, and, most importantly, this past spring the Board of Trustees au-thorized us to move ahead with Phase II of the project which will include the new Art Education Center (located in the former convent) and the new Coach Vince O’Connor Physi-cal Education and Athletic Training Center. Groundbreaking for these facilities took place on June 13 and construction is now underway. You will hear a great deal more about this project in the weeks and months ahead as the school’s “master plan” for modernization continues to unfold.

Finally, you should take pride in the knowledge that your support helps in many real ways that have a direct and last-ing effect on young lives. For example, you help us keep tu-ition at moderate levels so that more students can afford a St. Francis Prep education. You also provide scholarships for deserving students and sponsorship support for needy stu-dents. This is very important today. Soon you will be asked to consider your support for our modernization efforts as part of The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 and I know you will do your best to help us once again.

In closing, I would ask you to look through these pages and read about all the wonderful alumni events and activities that YOU help sponsor and maintain and, every so often, say a prayer that the Prep remains in a position to continue its mission and meet its goals and objectives at this important time in its history.

On Saturday, October 3rd, nearly five-hundred Prep alum-ni, Franciscan Brothers, faculty members (past and pres-ent), and friends converged on Williamsburg, Brooklyn for the much anticipated “Welcome Home—Return to North 6th Street Reunion.” This special event closed the 150th Anniversary Year celebrations on a high note.

It all began with a celebration of Mass at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church on N. 5th Street. Father Bill Sweeney, Prep’s Chaplain, along with two alumni, Kieran Fergus, O.P. ‘49 and Msgr. Edward McCullough ‘59, concelebrated the Mass with more than 20 members of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn community present.

Despite early afternoon light rain showers, alumni braved the elements to return to the place they once called home--186 North 6th Street. (Coin-cidentally or not, the rain abated as the celebration of Mass at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church on North 5th Street came to a close, adding an additional measure of excitement to the event!)

The street was closed to vehicular traffic, and alumni milled about as cocktails and hor d’oeurves were served from under a large, elegant party tent. The crowd overflowed onto the sidewalks and into the streets. “It was like a block party”, Bro. Leonard recalled. Afterwards, Prepsters from a variety of graduating years gathered for a spirited “Ral-ly-in-the Alley.”

They then proceeded to the school gym for a special cere-mony honoring Sam Stith ‘56 and Tom Stith ‘57 as Prep of-

ficially retired their basketball jerseys. Following the ceremony, alumni re-convened under the tent and dined on a fine buffet dinner.

Guests posed for class photos and re-visited the first floor classrooms of the former Prep which contained photo memorabilia from past eras. A great time was had by all!

Prep Goes “Back to Brooklyn” on North 6th Street to Close the 150th Anniversary Year Celebration

Bob Torre ‘61 has long been grateful to the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn for the gift of getting a great education at the Prep. However, on the night of October 3rd, nearly 50 years after graduation, he was vividly reminded of another fine blessing after his name was called as the lucky winner of $1,200 in the 50/50 Reunion Raffle. Bob calls it “symmetry.”

In a letter Bob sent to SFP Principal, Bro. Leonard Conway, after the event, he wrote:

“I was fortunate enough to be offered a $300 a year scholarship to St. Francis Prep. As an eighth grader on the Our Lady of Lourdes (Malverne, L.I.) CYO basketball team, we were the first parish to win a championship that was not from the NYC five boroughs. With the [Prep’s] tuition at $300 a year at the time, the scholarship was worth $1,200. I am pleased to now repay St. Francis Prep for that long ago scholarship with the $1,200 I won at the 50/50 raffle during the reunion at the ‘old’ Prep.”

Bob closed by saying,

“It was good to see some of my old buddies, particularly those who I played with on the city championship team in our junior year. I had a great time!”

Straight off the set of the Showtime hit “Nurse Jackie,” actor Peter Facinelli arrived at Prep to speak to the senior class on the morning of Wednesday, December 16th. It was his first visit back since he graduated in 1991. Assistant Principal, Pat McLaughlin ‘73, (pictured above, right) introduced Peter.

It started out as average day when Prep seniors were summoned to attend an assembly. But anticipation started to mount and erupted into excited cheers and applause when Peter Facinelli strolled down the center aisle of the Bro. Ralph Clifford Auditorium. “It was almost like watching a newsreel of The Beatles when they first gave a concert in America,” recalled Assistant Principal Patrick McLaughlin ‘73.

Facinelli, who is probably best known to this student audience for his role playing Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the popular Twilight series, was working on the Showtime hit “Nurse Jackie” prior to arriving at the school. The administration was able to keep the news of his visit a closely guarded secret. An announcement was made to the faculty and staff via email the night before, but the student body only knew of a “special assembly” on that morning. “In this age of the aggressive paparazzi and overenthusiastic fans we thought that it would be in the

best interest of safety for both our students, and for Peter, not to have wide publicity,” said Bro. Leonard Conway, the Prep’s Principal.

After being introduced, Facinelli said, “Now, I bet you think that I am here to talk to you all about my role in Twilight or Nurse Jackie, right?” The students once again erupted into cheers and applause. To which he added, “I know that you would like that but, I want to share something more with you. I want to tell you about my experience being a student at Prep and how the lessons I learned here carried me in my career as an actor, a husband and a father.” The students settled down and listened attentively as Peter took on a serious tone. “It’s been more than 15 years since I graduated from St. Francis Prep.” He paused momentarily. “And, I have been so fortunate to have experienced some success as an actor, but the one thing that I have learned is that you can

leave St. Francis Prep when you graduate, but St. Francis Prep never leaves you.” The auditorium once again erupted into cheers and applause. As Facinelli waited for an opening, one could tell that that he was speaking from the heart. “I think we all could sense that despite his and celebrity status, he truly felt that he was home again,” said Alumni Director, Bro. Robert Kent.

Peter continued, “When I started at Prep, I really didn’t know anybody. There was only one other person from my grade school that came here, and I remember walking through the doors and feeling like I was like a teardrop in an ocean. It was very over-whelming, and I was very shy.” He went on to describe how the large community at Prep enable him to foster many diverse friendships over his four years and how he didn’t have to belong to a clique to fit in at Prep. “Prep taught me how to just be myself, and that truly helped me discover what I wanted to do with my life.” Describing the impact that Prep had on his life, Peter said, “I am grateful for the work ethic that was instilled in me here, and I continue to draw upon that today as an actor.” He added, “I really appreciate that. I want to thank the school for that, and I want you guys to know that you are blessed to be here at Prep.”

Peter then talked about life after graduation and his decision to pursue an acting career. “When I told my parents that I wanted to attend NYU to study acting, I might as well have told them that I wanted to go to Mars, because that is the kind of look that they gave me after I said it,” Facinelli jokingly recalled. He continued with, “Everybody has a little voice inside their head that kind of steers them and tells them what they should be in life. And it’s up to you to listen to that little voice.”

Peter also spoke about the importance of giving something back. “I encourage each of you to look into at least one charity. Just think of the difference that all of you guys could make if you each volunteered for one thing over the next few years,” he said.

After the “formal” part of his talk ended, students lined up to ask questions and Peter answered all them with candor and a touch of humor. When it was all finished, he posed for a few photos with members of the administration and signed some student au-tographs.

“We are so grateful to Peter for coming back to share his valu-able life experience with the next generation of Prepsters,” Bro. Leonard Conway said. “He is a wonderful person, a gifted actor and a proud St. Francis Prep alumnus.”

SENIOR EARNS HONORS IN SCIENCE AND ENGLISHSt. Francis Prep has established a reputation for not only developing great science scholars, but also literary essay writers and creative writers as well. Stephanie Tuminello ‘10 (pictured at left) was awarded the Silver Key in the NYC Scholastic Writing Awards for her short story, “Another Night, Another Dream Wasted on You,”. Her work was selected from among 15,000 entries and this marks the eighth year out of ten that a Prep student has received such recognition. Stephanie was also named an Intel Science Talent Search semi-finalist (one of 300 nationwide), marking the eleventh time in twelve years that the Prep has had at least one semi-finalist in this prestigious competition. No other Catholic high school in the nation can match this record of achievement.

St. Francis Prep’s commitment to providing an outstanding, well-rounded, Catholic education is well-documented throughout its long history. As we begin a new era, our 152nd year, it was reaffirmed as we witnessed our students excel in science, music, art, and language (among other things), while performing acts of service which exemplify the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.

“THE LITTLE PORTION” IS STILL “VERY BIG” WITH PREPSTERS

Since 1957, students of St. Francis have exercised their creativity by writing and producing the literary arts journal called The Little Portion. Content includes poems, short stories, artwork and photos and it has long earned recognition for its high calibre content. Dur-ing the last 10 years, The Little Portion staff has celebrated its print release by hosting an “open mic” Poetry Reading.

Congratulations to Kelly Corrigan ‘10, (pictured at right) who presented her work at the The Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) national competition, and placed first in the Biological Sciences category for her research on childhood neuroblatoma. JSHS invites high school students to submit a paper on an original research investigation in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Additionally, Elizabeth Matamoros ‘10 placed first in the Engineering category of the JSHS competition and Dana Hemlall ‘10 placed third in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category. St. Francis Prep is the only Catholic school represented among the JSHS winners.

Fostering a love for the arts and sciences has been part of the Franciscan tradition since the Prep was founded more than 150 years ago. “Among the many things that sets us apart and makes the Prep learning experience unique, is the dedication and passion of my colleagues on the faculty, and the availability of many interesting course electives.” said Dr. Stephen Marino ‘71, Chair of the English Department. In addition to the state mandated requirements, Prep also offers many other electives including Drama, World Literature, Shakespeare, and Poetry.

On April 29, students in the freshman English Honors class held a Renaissance Festival to celebrate their reading of Shakespeare’s Othello. Prepsters conducted research on life during Elizabethan England, including the types of clothes worn by all classes of people and the kinds of food they ate. They dressed up and even went so far as to prepare food for a “royal banquet.” In keeping with old traditions of the time, this celebration was presided over by “his lordship” Dr. Marino, to whom the students gave “proper homage.” “Several research studies show that students who periodically have a little fun during class end up learning more because there minds are actively engaged.” said Marino.

In addition, 13 members of the senior class of 2010 participated in the New York City Science and Engineering Fair and five were named Finalists; Kelly Corrigan, Matt Kraljic, Elizabeth Matamoros, Shelly-Ann Rohitsingh, and Carlos Sanchez. Once again, the Prep was the only Catholic school in the city with finalists.

Congratulations to all of these fine students, and to the Science Department faculty members whose support and encouragement led to the high level of participation and achievement in these competitions.

SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM

Elizabeth Matomoros ‘10 placed first in the Engi-neering category of the JSHS competition. She will be attending Harvard Uni-versity in the Fall.

Dana Hemlall ‘10 placed third in the Behavioral and Social Sciences cate-gory. She will be attending Chestnut Hill College.

The Brother Ralph Clifford Memorial Auditorium was transformed into a courtroom on March 29th as the Prep community witnessed a “mock trial.” It was presided over by renowned judges William H. Sessions and Thomas D. Lambros. Students and faculty participated as witnesses, lawyers and criminology experts. The roles of prosecuting and defense attorneys were played by Andrea Mayora ‘10 and Shomari Stewart ‘10 respectively. Faculty member, Socrates Manolopoulous ‘93 was the “accused” and was eventually acquitted of all charges in the Mock Trial. The event allowed for participation from a wide spectrum of Prep’s classes and departments, including Forensic Science, Business Law, Drama, Student Government and the Art Department.

Third Annual Model United Nations Conference

William H. Sessions (who was nominated by Presi-dent Reagan and served as FBI director from 1987 to 1993), offers congratulations to Andrea Mayora ‘10 who served as the prosecuting attorney.

SFP’s Director of Technology, Socrates Manolo-poulous ‘93, played the role of the defendant, “Mr. Man” in a case in which he was accused of murder, and eventually acquitted of all charges.

Prep held its Third Annual Model UN Conference in January. Club President Olivia Rose Leach ’10, and Vice President Tiffany Varughese ’10 gathered over 200 student “delegates” from nine different schools to discuss significant world issues. Delegates were assigned a country, and were required to address vital issues before their respective committee. “The student leaders put a great deal of effort into the conference and are very aware of critical world issues,” said faculty moderator, Mr. Charles Jardines.

Joe Sciame ‘78, Chairman of the Computer/Business Department at the Prep, praised Elizabeth Cucinotta’s Accounting and Business Law students for their investing acumen and dedication after one of her 15 student teams placed first in the The Stock Market Game sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association Foundation (SIFMA) for Investor Research. All told, Prep had two other high ranking teams, finishing in 11th and 35th place. They also ranked high amongst 1,500 high school teams citywide. “This win is particularly special since this marks only the second year of St. Francis Prep’s participation under Ms. Cucinotta’s guidance and leadership,” Sciame noted. Cucinotta joined the Prep faculty three years ago and brings professional career experience in both the legal and financial areas to the classroom.

Prepsters Take First Place In Stock Market Game

Matt Kraljic ‘10 (pictured at left) received first place votes from every one of his 12 judges in five rounds of competition in the Student Congress at The New York State Forensic League’s Grand Championship tournament in April. Student Congress is a category of Speech designed to repli-cate the Congressional sessions of U.S. Senators. Matt was accepted to Columbia University and was told that it was not only his excellent grades, but his participation in the Student Congress and the Science Research Program that were taken into account. Congratulations to Matt and to the entire St. Francis Prep Speech and Student Congress Team.

Speech and Student CongressFor the fourth year in a row, the Student Congress Team at Prep won the Father Sean Ogle Award, naming it the best Congress team in Brooklyn and Queens. Members of the team play various roles. Some must write bills on current issues, while others engage in a debate and try to pass these bills in the same manner as the United States Congress. The speakers are judged on the validity of their arguments and how clearly they communicate their position. Under the guidance of faculty moderators Mrs. Haussermann and Ms. Prohaska and Maurice Braithwaite, a parent of two Prep alumni, the team has won numerous state and local cham-pionships over years for their skills. National Merit ScholarsSeven students were named commended students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship corporation program. Commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition.

National Hispanic Recognition Program

The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies nearly 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students each year. Although the NHRP does not provide a financial reward, being named is an important academic recognition. From (l-r): Bro. It was another proud moment for St. Fran-cis Prep when SFP Principal, Bro. Leonard Conway O.S.F., announced the names of three members of the Class of 2010 who were accepted for admission into the Unit-ed States Military Academy at West Point. Kelly Derienzo, Jason Lee and Jordan Lee will be joining the ranks of approximately 1,300 cadets this summer.

Three in one Class“In the past years, we have had students ac-cepted to West Point, but this is remarkable in that we have three in one graduating class.” Bro. Leonard said. He continued, “It speaks to the excellence of our students, and the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff, not to mention the loving support of the families of these students.” Highly SelectiveDuring a formal presentation at the Prep, Captain Matthew Pride, the United States Military Academy representative, affirmed what a truly real accomplishment this is, stating, “Only 10% of the 13,000 applicants gain admission to West Point.” SFP Guid-ance Department Chair, Robyn Armon, noted, “This is a reflection of your dedica-tion in raising your children, and it’s also a fine reflection of the academic quality and discipline offered by St. Francis Prep.”

The Golden LinksTo gain acceptance to West Point a student must have a strong academic background, leadership skills and be prepared physical-ly to hand the rigors of training. “We be-lieve that these students are well prepared because St. Francis Prep’s educational phi-losophy that is based on the “Four Golden Links” of Franciscan education, which hold that Spiritual, Intellectual, Social, and Physical values can be drawn from learning,”Bro. Leonard Conway asserted.

Bro. Leonard noted, “Given the state of world affairs and the prospect of one day being deployed to an area engaged in a military conflict, we feel the greatest sense of pride knowing that these young men and women are willing to serve their coun-try at a time when they are needed most.”

Students and graduates of St. Francis Prep’s Arts program have earned countless awards and distinctions, confirming its reputation in the Brooklyn-Queens community as a standout high school for art education. On May 22nd St. Francis Prep’s Art department presented its “Festival of the Arts.” It was an impressive display of our student’s talent and our faculty’s ability to bring out the best work in their students.

Prep offers a wide range of course selections —more than any other school in the area—and these courses range from Mechanical/Architectural Drawing to Advanced Dance Technique, and Computer Graphics to Art History. Other Art Department courses include, but are not limited to, Two-Dimensional Design, Intro to Performing Arts, Advanced Studio in Art, Fine Arts, Technical/Commercial Art, Performing & Theater Arts, Drawing from Life, Painting, Photography, Animation, Three-Dimensional Design, Fashion Design, Theater Design and Production, Computer Graphics, Web Page Design, History of Cinema, and Acting.

It’s no wonder that the Prep decided to dedicate another 8,000 square feet of space (in the former convent) for a new “Art Education Center.” (See page 30 for complete details.) When it’s complete , SFP Art Department Chair, Lisa Schaefer-Heuer ‘87, would like to invite all alumni back for a special reunion.

SFP Music Department’s “Instruments of Peace” benefit concert was held on Friday, April 16th at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan. Funds raised went to offset the travel costs associated with the trip to London that included four performances and participation in a cultural tour. (See following page for more details.)

The morning included a cruise along the Thames, and there was free time for group led, organized activities. In the afternoon all groups presented a concert for the Star and Garter Retirement Community in Richmond, Surrey. The group celebrated the end of their successful performance tour and American Independence Day with dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Travelled to the reconstructed Globe Theatre for an authentic feel of Shakespeare’s life and times including a workshop, conducted by actors, that introduced students to both the plays of Shakespeare and the conditions in which Elizabethan actors worked. Students even had a chance to do some impromptu singing and test the acoustics. Later, all groups performed together at Saint Mary’s, Osterley.

Panoramic city tour, including a visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral, a drive by Trafalgar Square, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace, home of the Changing of the Guard. Afterward, a visit to Westminster Abbey. The choir and orchestra performed their first concert at the Guild Church of St. Margaret Pattens in Eastcheap.

Visited Windsor Castle, the official residence of the British reigning monarch, the Queen. Returned to London with a drive by Runnymede, site of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215. The Jazz Band and Orchestra gave a concert performance in Victoria Embankment Gardens. Evening visit to the London Eye for the best aerial view of London.

The tour group, consisted of members of seven music faculty, 70 students, alumni and three parents. They arrived in London on June 30th, enjoyed some sightseeing and made a visit to the Royal Academy of Music’s renowned Museum by Tube.

On June 29th, 70 students in St. Francis Prep’s Jazz Band, Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra embarked on a four-concert tour of London. In addition to the four concerts the group presented, they participated in many educational and cultural tours. Plans are in the works for next year!!

Notre Dame Vision “A week of fellowship and faith”

June 28th-July 3rd, South Bend, IN

Students traveled to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN and attended the ND VISION program which brings high school students from all over the country together in order to share a week of fun, spiritual activities and where they explore leadership and vocational opportunities. It was a week filled with interactive group sessions, liturgies, and musical gatherings.The program is led by members of the Notre Dame community – students, staff and alumni alike – showing their dedica-tion to their school and faith lives. “It gave our students the time and place to focus on how they can use their gifts to serve others and develop a deeper, more personal rela-tionship with God,” said Mrs. George Anne Kotowicz, Campus Minister for Liturgy & Worship and coordinator of this trip. This is the second year SFP participated in the pro-gram and it has become an important compo-nent to our vocation awareness efforts.

St. Francis Secondary SchoolLare, Kenya

St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya was founded by the Franciscan Brothers of Galway, the same religious congrega-tion that founded SFP. The school oper-ates in the Catholic Diocese of Nakur and the students come from very poor families. Several of the children were orphaned by the 2008 election violence and the fami-lies are now hard hit by the on-going two year drought. Last year, donations from SFP community enabled the principal to pay school fees and food for some of the orphaned students. This year, St. Francis Prep students’ Lenten Collection was des-ignated to buy bicycles for these Kenyan students. Many have to walk more than 5 miles (one way) to school each day. Of-ten they arrive late, fatigued and unable to concentrate. The Prep community raised enough to purchase 60 bicycles.

Franciscan Immersion Experience: New Orleans: June 29-July 5

Camden NJ: July 12-17

Students and chaperones traveled back to New Orleans for the fifth year to continue our volunteer efforts to help people rebuild after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In Camden, students began the week learning about being poor in the State of New Jersey at the Romero Center social justice education program called Urban Challenge.

Students were given $3.00 each, grouped in a family of 3 or 4, and had to shop and prepare three meals based on the daily al-lotment for a person living on government assistance. The group was pushed by the reality of this welfare exercise to better understand the realities of the residents of the second poorest city in the United States.

Midnight Run

During the school year, SFP partners with a community organization called Midnight Run whose mission is to connect people living in homes with those without housing. Their volunteers serve as “guides” for our buses bringing us to designated meeting areas throughout Manhattan.

The SFP community gathers donations of clothing, hygiene products, blankets, and shoes in preparation for this outreach effort to our brothers and sisters who are homeless in NYC. Student volunteers are responsible to prepare meal bags, sort donations, and make care packages and then distribute these goods in person on the designated nights.

Haitian Earthquake Relief & Response

Our students responded to the crisis in Haiti by conducting a variety of fund rais-ing activities which helped raise over $13,000 from every part of the SFP Com-munity. The proceeds of these efforts went directed to:

(1) Catholic Relief Services.

(2) The Gaskov Clerge Foundation which sponsored a team of medical professionals who travelled to Haiti, bringing supplies and providing medical assistance. Our very own SFP alumna Dr. Anne Fils-Aime-Joseph ‘83 was part of the that group.

(3) The family of Mr. Boston Charles, member of our maintenance department, whose family was very adversely affected by the tragedy in Haiti.

(4) An SFP student, who is a cousin of re-cent alumnae and was sent to live with her family in Queens after her Catholic school in Haiti was demolished.

“Give from your Cor”

The 2010 Thanksgiving Food Drive brought in a record number of donations to benefit nine different community agencies this year. Each Cor (homeroom) was tasked with collecting donations for one of these agencies. For example, some Cors were challenged to bring in enough food to feed one family for one week. The donated items were brought to the auditorium and blessed at the Thanksgiving Mass. Presentations were made by the students to representative from: St. Aloysius Social Outreach; Incarnation Food Pantry; Presentation Soup Kitchen; Hour Children’s House; Queen of Peace Residence; St. John’s Bread and Life; St. Mary Star of the Sea and St. Gertrude Catholic Church; and Women Helping Women. “The drive teaches the students the importance of assisting struggling families in our city and demonstrates what we can accomplish collectively as a Franciscan school,” said Christian Sullivan, Director of Campus Ministry.

AT H L E T I C S H O N O R S The Prep honored members of the Athletics Department this year. Coach Tom Finn H’02, who passed away last October after his battle with Cancer, was honored at the 17th Annual Alumni Golf Classic together with current and long-time basketball coach, Tim Leary ‘63. (See p. 42.) Joanne Wagner and Dorothy Cassano were recognized as Honorary Alumnae of the Prep by the Alumni Association at the Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on May 1st. (See related story on p. 38.) Judith Turner was awarded The Canticle Citation for 25 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the Prep Community at the Feast of St. Francis Liturgy on October 2nd. “Battle on the Boulevard” Brings Rivals Together For Common GoodPrep and Holy Cross put aside their intense athletic rivalry for one night in order to raise money (and awareness) for the victims of the disaster in Haiti. In the process, Prep reconnected with Theresa Chillianis ‘89, a General Manager at MSG Varsity and Dylan Butler ‘92 , a sports writer at The New York Post and the game was televised on MSG.

Annual Christmas Party for Our Friends with Special Needs

Students, parents, faculty and alumni continued the tradition that the late Sr. Joseph Agnes began so many years ago when she brought Christmas cheer into the lives of others at this annual event. It began with the celebration of Mass. Volunteers then served refreshments and presented gifts to each of the guests. PRINCIPAL’S DINNERThe Annual Principal’s Dinner helps to recognize and thank the Prep’s key benefactors, trustees, and administrators for their many generous contributions to the school. Bro. Prep Breaks Ground for its new

Physical Education and

Art Education CentersOn a quiet, sunny Sunday morning, members of the SFP Board of Trustees, Franciscan Brothers, benefactors, and faculty and student representatives assembled under a large white tent outside of the cafeteria for a long anticipated event—a ground breaking for the new Art Education and Physical Education Centers. “We have been looking forward to this day for quite a while now,” Bro. Leonard Conway OSF, Principal of the Prep, told the gathering.

“Today’s ground breaking for our Physical Education and Art Education Centers (Phase II of the modernization program) will also include major technology upgrades, a key element of which will be the installation of a SmartBoard in every classroom,” Bro. Leonard continued.

How it all BeganA little over three years ago Prep commissioned a national leader in educational facilities design and construction to conduct a very thorough assessment of the current facilities and determine a course of action for the future. That analysis started the process of planning for a major Capital Improvement Program designed to transform the Prep into a truly modern, twenty-first century educational facility.

This “master plan” called for the expansion of the physical plant in order to help enhance current academic programs, meet the challenges of the future, and upgrade the school’s infrastructure to support all new and existing academic spaces. The Board of Trustees adopted this comprehensive revitalization program.

On Sunday, June 13th St. Francis Prep broke ground for the new Coach Vince O’Connor Physical Education and Athletic Training Center and a new Art Education Center.

One Project, Several PhasesIn the spring of 2007, Perkins Eastman was selected as the architectural firm, and the Prep retained the services of Tritec Building Company to oversee the overall project. They began the task of planning and designing what would eventually become a $30 million long-term “Master Plan” for the school that would be completed in several different phases. However, last year’s economic uncertainties forced the school to adjust the building and renovation timetable.

“The master plan is still intact,” Bro. Leonard assured everyone at the ground breaking ceremony. He continued, “$9 million in infrastructure improvements were completed this Fall.” Bro. Leonard was referring to the complete upgrade of the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and electrical systems. He also stated, “Future phases include a new building that will house our science and music programs, while the final piece involves creating a new front entranceway to the school with new administrative offices and a large chapel that will become the focal point of all our endeavors.”

“Footing the Bill”A key component of the financing plan for this project has been a major capital campaign that was originally inaugurated at Prep’s 150th Anniversary Gala in Brooklyn on October 4, 2008. “It was a very auspicious start to the campaign at that time, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of several families and individuals,” said Bob Angeletti, the Director of Development at St. Francis Prep.

One could sense the renewed optimism and excitement in Bro. Leonard’s voice as he proclaimed, “We are now ready to begin the campaign anew, and I am very pleased to announce The Campaign for St. Francis Prep—The Next 150—our renewed effort that will build upon the more than $5 million that has already been committed toward our long-term goal of at least $15 million.”

Key Leadership Donors and Members of the Campaign Council include alumni Vincent ‘53 and Paulette Toscano, Joseph Walker ‘57, John Brown ‘76, and, Peter

Callahan ‘59, whose generosity will help establish the Coach Vince O’Connor Physical Education and Athletic Training Center. (See illustration on next page.) This state-of-the-art facility will honor and recognize Vince O’Connor’s more than 55 years of dedicated service to thousands of student athletes at St. Francis Prep, and the Franciscan Brothers, the faculty and staff, alumni and friends are all very pleased by this prospect.

The school also announced that the fully renovated Football Training Facility that will be part of this new Physical Education and Athletic Training Center will be named for the Prep’s former assistant coach Frank Nastro. (See next page.)

The school’s new Art Education Center will be located at the top of the west wing of the building complex, in the former convent. Earlier this year, the area was prepped to make ready for a modern 8,000 square foot facility that will house the full-range of visual and fine arts programs. The SFP Art Department currently offers 30+ courses—more than any high school in the area.

Signs of construction activity are evident all around the Prep’s campus this summer as work is getting under way on the new Art Education and Physical Education Centers. After the official end of the academic year this past June, a temporary “Construction Field Office” was placed next to the school. (See photo below, on top right.) Construction materials were delivered to the roof via crane (photo on bottom right). The former convent, located on the top of the west wing of the school, was completely gutted and prepped (see photo below, bottom left) to make ready for a modern 8,000 square foot facility that will house the full-range of visual and fine arts programs. Bro. Leonard has been meeting extensively throughout the process with the architects and construction personnel. (See photo on top left below.)

MARC HAMLIN ‘84 was a starter and member of the 1983 football team that went undefeated and earned national ranking. Hamlin continued to play football at Marist College and was captain of the team while earning an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice. Marc went on to to earn an advanced degree in public administration from Troy State and is also a graduate of the University of Lousiville’s Southern Police Institute—a very prestigious police management program in which he was a Dean’s Scholar and president of the class. Marc moved to Tampa Baby in 1990 and joined the police department there. Five years later, he was promoted to detective and worked undercover. He received the department’s highest recognition after he recovered from a gunshot wound while on the job. Two more promotions followed, the second involving the narcotics task force. In 1998, he became the supervisor of a vice squad for four years. Two years ago, Marc was promoted to major and went on to become the lead law enforcement officer for the 2009 Super Bowl. Later that same year he was appointed as the youngest Assistant Chief of Police in the department. Marc and his wife Paige have three wonderful boys and reside in Valrico, FL.

WALLY BISHOP ‘80 has been a familiar presence at Prep since he enrolled as a fresh-man nearly 35 years ago. He has served as both a member and the President of the SFP Alumni Association Board of Directors, and has helped lead, plan and organize hundreds of events and outreach activities for Prep alumni. Wally has over 25 years of experience in the financial services profession. He began his career with Peat Marwick in 1984 as an audit manager and left there in 1990 to join Nordbanken where he served as Control-ler. From 1995-97 he served as Chief Administrative Officer at Barclay’s Bank and then moved to Deutsche Bank, where he currently serves as a Managing Director and Head of the Independent Control Office. Wally and his wife Lisa have three wonderful children and they reside in Westbury, NY.

DENNIS MCDERMOTT ‘70 played basketball at St. Francis Prep and in his senior year his team finished third in the CHSAA. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to St. Francis College and graduated in 1974 as the all-time leading scorer. (He was also a draft selection for the New York Knicks.) Dennis then served as Athletic Director at Packer Collegiate Institute and Assistant Basketball Coach at St. Francis College. In 1983 Dennis left the field of education and embarked on a career on Wall Street. After 15 years as a municipal bond broker, Dennis returned to education when he became the Athletic Director at Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge. Dennis earned his Masters from Brooklyn College in 1980 and then joined St. Francis College as Alumni Director where he continues to serve to this day. He was inducted into the St. Francis College Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number “22” was retired that same year —the only number to be retired at St. Francis College. Dennis a strong supporter and active volunteer for many non-profit organizations. Dennis and his wife, Cathy, reside in Brooklyn.

The St. Francis Prep Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding members of the Alumni community who demonstrate the true Franciscan spirit and whose achievements, service to the community, and loyalty to alma mater distinguish them from others. Honorary Alumnus status is bestowed upon members of the Prep community who, while not Prep graduates, they have otherwise exhibited a deep devotion to furthering the mission of St. Francis Prep. Recognition Medals are presented to the members of the 50th, 55th, 60th and 70th anniversary classes. A Reunion Celebration with live music from our student ensembles and a DJ, dinner and class photos for 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th,

45th, 50th, 55th, 60th and 70th classes follows immediately after the Mass and ceremony.

JOSEPH CASTELLANO, Asst. Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Joe began teaching English at St. Francis Prep in September 1983 and has taught at all grade levels. He began serving as an Assistant Principal in 1992, and has continued to teach at least one class each year. He also devotes time to work with students in the Prep’s Writing Center. Joe grew up in Jackson Heights and lived there until five years ago, when he and his family relocated to Glen Head. He and his wife, Mary, just cel-ebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Claire and Cecilia, who are 16. Joe is an avid reader and he enjoys travelling and cooking. Joe is highly-regarded by his present and former students and admired by his colleagues.

DOROTHY CASSANO, Assistant to the Director of Athletics Dorothy has been a dedicated staff member of the St. Francis Prep community since 1974 when the Prep relocated to Fresh Meadows, Queens. She has worked as an ad-ministrative assistant for her entire career at Prep. Dorothy and her husband Jimmy raised three sons, all of whom attended SFP. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the athletes, faculty and coaching staff at St. Francis Prep and is ad-mired by everyone at the school.

JOANN WAGNER, Girls Basketball Coach Joann began coaching at Prep in 1975. She has been selected as Coach of the Year five times and was inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame in 1993. Joann brings so much to the program: a solid work ethic, dedication and concern for the students and integ-rity. Her six children, Brian, Maureen, Tim, Kevin, PJ and Danny have all been student athletes at Prep. Three were the Al Powers Award recipients for being outstanding stu-dent athletes in their senior year. In 1997, Joann became a member of the Prep faculty and is a member of the Phys Ed department.

Over 150 golfers and more than 250 dinner guests participated on a beautiful day to raise money for the Prep’s scholarship and sponsorship programs. Tritec Building Company, the managing contractor for the Prep’s Capital Improvement Program, sponsored the event, while BMS/Bank of New York Mellon, CulinArt, and John J. Brown ‘76 provided additional major sponsorships.

A live auction, silent auction, top-drawer raffle (with great prizes), and a 50/50 raffle (with $900 to the winner) were all part of the festivities, along with the wonderful presentations to honor and recognize Coach Leary and Coach Finn for their many accomplishments.

1945A.T. Abbatemarco served in Gen. Eisen-hower’s Honor Guard in Europe and re-tired in 1968 from the Military.

1949Father Kieran Fergus has been an ar-dent support of Prep this year by being present to support SFP at a few events. He, along with Msgr. Ed McCullough ’59 and Prep’s chaplain, Fr. Bill Sweeney, concelebrated the “Return to North 6th Street” Mass on October 3, 2009. He also came out in support of our student musicians on April 16, when they performed a benefit concert at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan.

1950George J. Clough was appointed Na-tional Legal Counsel of the Ancient Or-der of Hibernians.

Robert F. Koehler was a member of the 1952 US Olympic Water Polo Team, under the guidance of coach Thomas Booras.

John L. Schultz retired from DuPont but is still working under contract. He is a cantor at a church in Wilmington Del. He is a runner, and has taken part in about 100 races a year. He couldn’t make it to the reunion because he was scheduled to run a marathon (26.2 me-ters) the next day. He still uses the Lat-in he learned at the Prep and earned a Ph. D. from the University of Minne-sota in 1959.

1951Jack M. Prenderville served as New York State Athletic Commissioner and introduced the Thumbless Glove (avoiding eye injuries) to boxing.

Robert J. Fey spent 32 years as a Math Teacher and Swim Coach. He has been retired for 15 years. His wife, Carol, is a retired Art Teacher. They have two children Kate and Chris. Kate teaches first grade and Chris is in Law School at Santa Clara, CA.

1955Charles J. Cain and his wife Mary Lou Fitzgerald have four children (Charles, Carolyn, Justine & Courtney), and nine grandchildren. He has been employed for over 40 years in commercial banking as a Vice President/Commercial Lend-ing Officer for Chase Manhattan Bank, Natwest Bank and Provident Bank.

Frank J. Nappi has been a Eucharistic Minister at Maria Regina R.C. Church-Seaford N.Y. for more than 21 years.

William B. Connolly has been married for 48 years to his wife, Mary. They are the proud parents of five daughters. He retired from Unilever Corporation after 25 years of service in 1999. The most rewarding job he had was his volunteer service on Madison, CT Am-bulance from 1979 to 1990. He says, “Helping sick, injured, especially elderly and children is the most rewarding ex-perience an individual can encounter.

1957Edward E. Connaghan lived on Empire Boulevard in Brooklyn while attend-ing SFP. He married Anne Sweeney and they have four daughters, and they lived in St. Thomas Acquinas par-ish (Flatlands) for 38 years before he retired from the NYPD and moved to Sussex County, NJ.

Joseph E. Thompson has been married for over 43 years to Susanne Fitzpat-rick. They have three married children and eight wonderful grandchildren. Joe is still teaching at Villanova Univer-sity in the Political Science Department after 40 years.

1958Frederick A. Palumbo is the Chair of the Management & Marketing depart-ments at Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University in New York.

William J. Shin is semi-retired and works as a contract consultant for strategic global procurement. He exercises at the health club several times a week and en-joys fishing, photography, computer and sports activities.

1960Louis G. Alba retired from IBM after 30 years and also retired from high school teaching. He published a book on growing up in Brooklyn in 2008. He is continuing his writing career while serving as a sub-stitute teacher. Lou was instrumental in helping organize the Class of 1960’s 50th Anniversary Reunion Celebration this past spring.

Peter M. Swist currently resides in Franklin Lakes, NJ with his wife, Ann, of 40 years. His mom, Mary, turned 100 in January of this year. He is active in local charitable and national professional as-sociations.

Joseph T. Skerrett earned his PhD. from Yale University in 1975. He retired from U. Mass, Amherst in 2009 after 40 years of college teaching there and elsewhere.

Philip J. Wierzbicki has been married for 42 years and retired in 2006. He has two children: Dr. Dania Wierzbicki, Allergy and Immunology, and Dr. Derek Wierzbicki, Emergency room medicine & hyperbaric medicine.

Patrick J. Carroll has seven children and 14 grandchildren. He has earned numerous police community awards over his forty-five years in policing career which includes 28 years with the NYPD and 17 years with New Rochelle Police Department.

Anthony J. Biancaniello has two children and three grandchildren.

Charles T. Obermeyer has a son, Jeffrey, who recently received a Masters Degree in Military History, cum laude, from Nor-wich University.

Patrick M. Demery is a retired bank execu-tive after a 43 year career in commercial banking. He is still active as board mem-ber of Risk Management Associates and Financial Consulting.

Robert P. Costanzo married Anne Bartezs in 1982 and they have two sons: Daniel & Chris. He has enjoyed a rewarding career as an actor in movies, television, and the-atre. Bob has also had a voiceover career for 35 years and appeared in the first sea-son of the television series NYPD Blue.

John J. O’Connor served on the NYPD for 34 years and board of directors of the Commack Little League. He was also a basketball coach at Christ the King & St. Patrick’s in Smithtown, NY. He is married 42 years and has one son.

A Golden Anniversary Reunion Weekend: In keeping with an old SFP senior class tradition, several members of the Class of 1960 took a Circle Line Boat Ride around Manhattan.

Two deceased members of the Class of 1960 were honored posthumously the the Golden Anniversary Re-union on May 1, 2010. Joseph Conlon was a Deputy Chief Investigator and a Brigadier General in the US Army Reserve whose last assignment was during Operation Desert Storm (left). Lawrence Stack joined the FDNY in 1967 after serving in Vietnam. He perished on 9/11 while working on the ground floor of the North Tower. His children, Brian and Michael (right), both with the FDNY, accepted a plaque in honor of their father.

grandchildren. He retired as senior principal scientist from Kraft/Nabisco Foods Group. He is currently a teach-ing/research professor of Chemistry at Hofstra University.

Peter J. Fitzpatrick is married to Nimia Lopez-Fitzpatrick. They have five chil-dren, and three grandchildren.

Lawrence M. Laskowski married his wife Veronica in 1964. They have two children and six grandchildren. He established the Brooklyn Tech Intern Program at Con Edison in 2000 and re-ceived NYIT Environmental excellence award in 1993.

Bartholomew H. Peluso was an editor on the San Fran, and a member of the Power Boat squad and the Poster Club as a student at Prep.

Charles E. Traina is married for 38 years to Maria and they have two sons.

Gasper C. Calega will be married for 50 years in 2011. He retired from Conrail in 1996 and has three children and five grandchildren.

Byron J. Fanning is retired as the Direc-tor of Government Affairs from Grey-hound, Lines Phoenix, AZ.

Alfred J. Sumsky is married for 31 years and has two children.Joseph M. Lisante earned his bach-elors degree from The City College of

New York in 1965 and served active duty in the U.S. Marines from 1965-1968 which included a combat tour in Vietnam. He worked for Chase Bank from 1969-1984 as an operations offi-cer and then the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, from 1984-2006. He retired in 2006.

Stephen P. Morris is married to Shirlyn and they have three children. He re-tired from the Department of Defense in 1996.

Edward J. Powers has been married for 42 years, two sons, and one grandson. He is a retired New York State Parole Officer.

Francis V. Rossano enjoyed a 35 year career as an engineer for Combustion Engineering/ABB/Westinghouse. He has five children & eight grandchil-dren.

Benedict F. Ruggiero had a great time working with Louis Alba and others re-connecting with former classmates and planning for the reunion.

Anthony F. Russo is married 46 years, and has six daughters and eleven grandchildren.

Robert M. Sawicki taught English at Walt Whitman High School, Hunting-ton Station, NY for 33 years and retired in 2001.

Joseph F. Scholle served in the US Marines from 1965-1976. He piloted a helicopter in Vietnam from October 1967 to October 1968 earning two Purple Hearts and a Distinguished Fly-ing Cross.

Daniel J. Scotti is currently retired from the practice of internal medicine. He lives in Vacaville, CA, a smaller city one hour north of San Francisco and one half hour west of Sacramento.

1961Donald P. Devane and his wife Kath-leen have four children and three grandchildren. He retired from the U.S. Treasury Department and enjoys golf, skiing, travel and time with his family. Don has been an active partici-pant in the SFP Washington, DC Alumni Chapter.

George Steidle is a Human Resources Consultant for Parsons Brinckerhoff, Inc. (PB). His entire career has been spent within Human Resources Man-

agement within engineering, high tech and pharmaceutical companies. His wife is an administrator for a local engi-neering firm and they have been mar-ried for nearly 39 years.

Thomas E. O’Brien has three sons and one grandchild.

Pierre Dumaine lost his wife of 35 years, Marian, who passed away this past spring after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Please remem-ber Pierre, Marian and their three chil-dren and nine grandchildren in your prayers.

Salvatore J. Crispi is semi-retired and living in California. He is currently working as a Referee Director for the Walnut Creek Soccer Club and Camp Director, the Piedmont Soccer & Track Camps, the Piedmont Recreation De-partment. He is still an active Soccer Referee and continues to officiate, Youth, High School, Collegiate and Amateur Soccer Games. In addition, he is a USSF Soccer Assignor for some 500 Officials in eight Leagues and three As-sociations.

John F. McCormack attended Hofstra University and played football. He left in 1964 to join USMC where he served from 1966-68. He spent the next 33 years in the FDNY and retired in 2001. He dabbled as an actor in off Broadway theatre, film, TV, and feature films.

1962Paul D. Duran retired after 42 years in Secondary Education and is now spending more time with his five grandchildren.

Francis A. Higbie did a great deal of traveling last year. He and his wife, Lois, flew to England last year and took a pleasant train ride from Minneapolis to Chicago. While in Indianapolis he was able to see classmate, Andy Vasiento—who he hadn’t seen since graduation. He just finished a community theater British comedy titled “There Goes the Bride.” The show received a favorable review in a local newspaper.

Donald E. Kent is the Department Chair of Physical Education and Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School (Queens) for 28 years. He is a member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame and Msgr. McClancy H.S. Hall of Fame, and a NYC Representative for NYC Catholic High Schools in the New York State Basketball Coaches As-sociation. Don holds two masters de-grees from St. John’s and NYU. In the summer of 2004, he worked in Austra-lia and New Zealand.

Anthony F. LaFortezza was born and raised in Queens. He graduated from Saint Matthias School in Ridgewood and went on to study at the Prep. He survived cancer and is still married for more than 34 years. His wife, Berna, is a LMSW, Psychiatric Social Worker with the New York State Department Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities Department.

1964Alexander I. McAllister retired to Florida to escape winters and pursue his passion for fishing and boating. He has several hobbies including play-ing and building acoustic guitars and upholstering boat seats and cushions. He has three grown children and five grandchildren. He attributs his eclec-tric interests to the experience that he had at St. Francis Prep.

Ken Moran ‘65 is the NY Post’s out-doors columnist since 1980. He start-ed in 1972 as a copy boy after return-ing from Vietnam, and became a news reporter in 1977. Ken has received awards from the Coast Guard, Mon-

tauk Captain’s Association, and the New York Boatmen’s Association.

Kevin B. Westley published a book on Irish dancing.

John B. Higgins has been married to his wife, Diane, for 37 years. They have four children and three grandchildren. John retired from the U.S. Mint and is now the Mayor of Goshen, NY. Diane was a passenger on the “Miracle-on-the-Hudson” Flight 1549 that success-fully ditched in the Hudson River six minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport back in January 2009.

Paul M. Jourcin is a French teacher at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, MA.

Dennis Devenney served in the US Army from 1970-1990 and was sta-tioned in Germany and Korea on vari-ous assignments.

Albert A. Sofia is currently semi-retired as a vice president at Citibank, NA and is now consulting after a 40 year career. He is married and has two children and three grandchildren.

Andrew Ulitsky served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Afghanistan after

college. Upon his return he joined the Public Health Service (out of CDC Atlanta) and trained as an epidemiolo-gist working throughout the US & Cari-bean in disease control receiving vari-ous citations. He has the fondest of SFP memories except for Bro. Canisius wacking him on the side of his head for day dreaming!

Joseph A. Messina is a recording art-ist/lead singer and writer for “Apache” on Atlantic Records in the early 80’s.

Peter Meloro is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the US Army 101st Air-borne Division.

1966Kevin J. Sherry retired from the US Navy in 1993 as a Commander and is now working for Northrop Grumman as a Logistics Manager supporting a Navy acquisition program. His wife Renee is a Vision Therapist working primarily with children with vision pro-cessing problems.

Kenneth B. Garry retired from Mon-ticello NY Schools after 35 years. The last 19 years he served as the Direc-tor of Health Physical Education and Athletics. Prior to becoming Athletic

Keeping Ken Cummings ‘64 Memory Alive: Bob Martin ‘67 and John Higgins ‘65 are two SFP classmates who have worked hard to honor the life and memory of Vietnam war veteran Ken Cummings ‘64 over the past several years. The pair helped establish the Ken Cummings Award that is presented each year at the West Point Triathlon. Ken was the captain of the Prep’s swim team that won the city championship in 1963. Ken went on to West Point where he also captained the swim team there. He became a Ranger and served in the war in Vietnam where he died in a helicopter crash in 1969. Each summer, Martin ‘67 and Higgins ‘65, have called on friends, family and the administration of the USMA at West Point to be present for an award at the West Point Triathalon in Ken’s memory. Ken’s widow, daughter and three grandchildren are pictured above at the 2009 event, along with the top male and female cadet winners, Dan Livolsi and Ashley Morgan. James P. McDade has been married for 22 years to his wonderful wife, Gina. They have two children. His hobbies include golf, reading, writing, travel and sports. He has worked at Swiss Bank Corp/UBS Securities LLC for 28 years. He is now working as an inde-pendent management consultant but seeking opportunities in the financial industry.

Benjamin Borelli has been a general manager of a luxury travel consulting

firm for over 30 years. He took a break fom the industry in 1994 to become a professional chef. He worked in various restaurants for two years then finally went back to his original field, travel.

Samuel R. Crescente spent the last 35 years in different positions throughout city government and is currently the Director of Desktop Support for Man-hattan and Staten Island for NYC Chil-dren’s Services.

Paul V. Cucarese retired from the NYC Department of Education in 2009 and is currently a private school teacher in Literacy and Social Studies.

Edward V. DiLello would love to con-nect with any alums who remember his late brother, Paul DiLello, who taught music at the Prep for two years in the 1980s. Paul conducted the chorus and the Prep’s musicals.

Michael A. Rozza retired in 2009 after 30 years of teaching English in NYC Public Schools. His last school was Flushing High School and he continues to teach part-time in the Specialized High School Institute.

1971Stephen T. Doyle was appointed to the NYPD in 1981, retiring in 2001 as a Police Sergeant. He started work at the Trans-portation Security Administration at JFK Airport in 2002 and is presently the Man-ager of the TSA/JFK Coordination Center.

1972Vincent F. Manzo worked at a sattelite base on the border of Darfur and Chad. (This is where tens of thousands of refugees cross the border from Darfur

each week to flee the killings and star-vation.) He flew there on a four engine prop U. N. plane that took two hours from N’Djamena. He spent time meet-ing with the Chief of Operations for Communication and Information tech-nology, inspecting their warehouse and writing up a report for the U.N. General Assembly. He found that the quality of life (even for staff) is really poor. Driving from the airstrip to the compound they came across masses of people along the road, emaciated and begging, and others just lying on the ground.

Brendan T. Black has been with the ABC Television Network as a Videotape Editor since 1976.

1974Vincent P. Mancini is still playing elec-tric guitar after all these years. He real-ly enjoyed the night his band played in the gym for the Spring 1974 Dance and marching in the St. Pat’s Day parade.

1975Christine M. Tomaszewski-Komp is married for 21 years to her best friend, and is employed as Controller of plas-tics manufacturer for the last 13 years. She lives in Georgia with the family’s two Golden Retriever mix dogs.

Joan K. Sireci established a new busi-ness in 2004; JC Tutoring. She cur-rently owns, runs and provides private instruction for students in grades 1 through 8 (all subjects) and 9 through 12 (Math and Science). She takes par-ticular pleasure in giving back to Prep by helping students that attend SFP.

Elvira M. DiBiase-Francischelli is a se-nior Mammography Technologist at

Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Kenneth W. Wolf and his wife Claire are running a family farm in northern New York since Ken’s retirement from the New York State Police.

Maria E. Mastromauro-Comparato is married to Raymond Comparato and lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Bernadette Dean-Lonergan com-pleted her Masters Degree in Nursing from Monmouth University in August of 2009 .

Mario Arena is married to Janine Grotano-Arena from the Class of 1976. They have two daughters who are both St. Francis alumni.

Roy W. Pastor has been happily mar-ried to Ann Marie Mercadante since 1982. They have two daughters; An-tonia and Alessandra. He is living and practicing law in the small town of Har-vard, MA.

Louis G. Pastina has a daughter Katie who graduated from Catholic Univer-sity in Washington D.C. in May 2010.

1976Edward A. Vanek is an orthopedic sur-geon and married to Karee. They have two children, Chloe and Edward.

Frank Pomarico ‘70 was the co-captain of the 1973 National Championship Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He moved into the starting lineup at left guard during his sophomore year in 1971. He remained a fixture for the Irish through the 1973 season when he was named tri-captain, along with Dave Casper and Mike Townsend. He recalls, “Notre Dame was a simple choice for me. When I was growing up in New York, Gerry DiNardo and I were classmates in grade school and at Prep, and his brother, Larry, was someone we looked up to.”

There were bigger players for the Irish, faster players, and players who went on to stellar professional careers. But no one cherished his role as a leader of the Notre Dame squad more than the 6-foot-1, 250-pound Pomarico. His journey to and through Notre Dame truly was a labor of love. Frank is now in sales and living in Jackson, MI. He does a radio show with former UNLV football coach Harvey Hyde (1982-85) in Las Vegas and still loves talking about Notre Dame football. He is a motivational speaker and maintains a website www.thedrivenspirit.com

He also coaches football tight ends and tackles at Lumen Christi High School, where his son, Tommy, starred the past couple of years before accepting a preferred walk-on offer from Lloyd Carr at the University of Michigan. People ask Frank, “How can you send your son to Michigan?” He tells them, “I pray for Notre Dame but now I root for Michigan.”

John P. Halayko has been working for Fidelity Investments for more than 23 years. His current role is as a senior Di-rector of International Operations. He has two beautiful children. Both are in college and doing very well.

Matthew Myles is currently deployed as a LTC, USAR, assigned to the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expedition-ary). This is an Army Reserve Unit from Orlando, FL. He served as the 143rd’s Representative in the capacity of a Plans Officer to ISAF (NATO) CJ4 Logis-tics Plans Branch, Kabul Afghanistan through December 2009.

Carine Remy has three boys, and is em-ployed with Broward County as a case manager for the past 17 years. She also works part-time as a licensed practical nurse for the past 10 years.

Ronald P. Antal has worked for the New York State Lottery as a Regional Manager for the past 18 years. His daughter, Lauren Antal, just enrolled at SFP class of 2013.

Karen M. Michael-Forte is married to Barry Forte, Class of 1977 for 25 years. They have two children.

Frank D. Morgera is a chiropractor and has an office on Court Street in Brooklyn.

Major Al Garbarino ‘75 is in the US Army Reserve, served a 13-month combat tour of duty in Iraq with the Military Police from 2003 - 2004. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Combat Action Medal for actions there. Major Garbarino was injured pretty severely there, and has endured eight surgical procedures since coming home. He is currently working as a Principal Court Clerk in Queens Supreme Court and was medically discharged from the US Army Reserve In November 2009. We are thankful to Al for his service to our country!

John A. Fry ‘78 Elected new President of Drexel University

1978Maureen Ardiff-Cooke has been happi-ly married to her husband, Sean, for 22 years and they have beautiful twins. In addition to various volunteer services and being the twins’ personal chauf-feur, Maureen writes the “On The Rise” column in the New York Mets’ program. She also does free-lance administrative services for several clients.

MaryLee Gaffney-Yamasaki and her husband, Pat, moved to Northern Vir-ginia in 1998. Pat is the head of the Tech Ops at the company he works for and MaryLee works in Human Resourc-es for a company specializing in global partner networks in aerospace and de-fense organizations.

Arthur J. Tremblay joined USMC in February 1961. He left the Marine

Corps in 1965 and joined the NYC Tran-sit Police. Arthur earned a Bachelors degree in Special Studies from St. Fran-cis College in 1980. He retired in 1988 and continued working as a manager in the private sector until 2004. He is cur-rently enjoying retirement.

Mona Poulas lives in Carmel, NY with her husband and two daughters. She holds an accounting degree from C.W. Post and an MBA from Pace Univer-sity. Mona is working at a CPA firm in Brewster.

Nancy M. Zollner-Ferraris was married to Mark Ferraris in June 1990 and they have three daughters.

John A. Fry ‘78, who was most recently the president of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and a former University of Pennsylvania executive, is Drexel University’s new president.

He defies the traditional college president model: He does not have a doctoral degree, has

never been a dean or provost, and has not taught or conducted research. But he has spent his career in higher education, including an 11-year turn as a consultant to colleges and universities, helping them with organization and finances. He also served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of the University of Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2002. During that time, he had a leadership role in Penn’s successful neighborhood revitalization.

At Franklin and Marshall, a 2,200-student liberal arts college, Fry used many of the same strategies. They built a new complex for the life science and philosophy departments, a coffeehouse and bookstore in the center of campus, and a writer’s house and international center. Several dormitories also were converted into academic/social/living quarters, and a five-story complex with 130 apartments and retail areas was built. He recently was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education for the reclamation and planned redevelopment of an industrial site. The article was titled “The College President as Urban Planner.”

The 22,000-student Drexel University includes medical and business schools and a graduate campus in Sacramento, CA. The new president also will inherit Drexel’s challenging $500 million capital campaign, now in its second year. Fry has a bachelor’s degree in American Civilization from Lafayette College in Easton, PA, and a Masters in Business Administration from the Stern School of Business at New York University. We wish John continued success in his new endeavor!

Elizabeth A. Chester has been work-ing in Kenya since 2008 and is running an Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Program.

Mela Gerbasi-Stevens opened a nutri-tion & wellness counseling practice six years ago, when she changed careers, and has since added teaching yoga and meditation to the mix.

Debra A. Handte-Wang started an evangelization apostolate a few years back and will be opening the St. Fran-cis Xavier Institute of Evangelization in Brooklyn. The apostolate is responsible for evangelizing the Chinese living in North and South America and Europe.

Joseph A. LaBarbera is working at Sun-harbor Manor Nursing Home in Rosy-

lyn Heights. He is in nursing adminis-tration and is the coordinator of the Wound and Infection control programs of the facility. Mariana Bernunzo-Connolly is a client portfolio manager at JP Morgan. She is happily married to Ray Connolly and lives in Huntington, NY .

Linda Morrissey moved to California in 1985 and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay area. She obtained a graduate degree in Social Work from San Diego State University and is em-ployed by the County of Sonoma as a Forensic Interviewer and supervisor for Child Protective Services.

Joseph J. Gumber is writing his first book, non-fiction, about how media coverage affected the public percep-tion of major events in the world from newspapers to radio to television to 24 hour Cable News to the Internet and now to social media.

Michael C. Giordano and Carol Tilt (Class of 1980) were married in 1987. Carol is a high school math teacher and Mike is a pharmacist. They have two children.

Mary Pappas ‘78 never imagined that her position as the school nurse at Prep would end up casting her into the national spotlight in the nursing profession. But that is what happened in the year-and-a-half since scores of frightened Prep students first started arriving at her of-fice with fever, nausea, sore throats, difficulty breathing, and other flu-like symptoms.

A nurse of 27 years, Pappas credits her broad range of experience in pediatric nursing, hospital nursing, and nursing at summer camps with preparing her to recog-nize that something was not right and to react calmly and decisively to what would be identified as the first U.S. cases of influenza A (H1N1)—swine flu.

Since the outbreak in April 2009, she has been interviewed by the all of the major New York media outlets including the New York Times, NY Daily News, Newsday, “Good Day New York” and ABC, NBC and National Public Ra-

dio. She was nominated as the “Queens Person of the Year” in 2010, and has been invited to make presentations at a dozen health conferences across the United States. Just recently Mary learned that she was nominated for the CDC Hero Award. But what does Mary think of all of this?

She is very modest and maintains, “When our students got sick, I gave them the oldest advice in the book: stay home, get rest, and avoid contact with people who could catch the flu from you.”

It’s the same advice the Centers for Disease Control and public health officials told millions of Americans to help stop the spread of the disease. Mary may not consider herself a hero, but the parents of our 2,700 Prep students and her 45,000 fellow school nurses certainly do!

Dr. Peter J. Rappa ‘79 After attending St. Francis Prep, Peter J. Rappa, MD went on to study at Colum-bia University where he graduated with a BA. He earned his Doctor of Medi-cine from Texas Tech Uni-versity and is now a reha-bilitation physician in North

Texas. In 1993, Dr. Rappa began his career as a medical director for rehabilitation in an impa-tient/outpatient practice with a special inter-est in brain and work injury. In 2004, he was named as one of D Magazine’s Best Doctors in Dallas. Dr. Rappa began to see the connec-tions and implications of mind, body, spirit, and health in 1998. His book, “Healing Heart to Soul,”recounts experiences he has had with these entities as a health care professional.

The Marian University Board of Trustees announced February 12, 2010 that it has appointed Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., as the new president of the university, effective July 1, 2010. DiSalvo will succeed Sr. Mary Mollison, C.S.A., who has been serving as interim president since March 2009.

Dr. Barbara Johnson ‘84 published two books on antiques, “Antique and Vintage Fashions 1745 - 1979” and Valentines, a Collector’s Guide, 1700s - 1950s, both by Collector Books at www.collectorbooks.com. Both books are available online, in bookstores and from the publisher’s website. Dr. John-

son will have her article, “Identifying Antique and Vintage Fashions - Use Your Eyes,” featured as the cover story on Southeastern Antiquing and Col-lecting Magazine’s January 2010 issue. Dr. Johnson was also interviewed as a guest author on September 27, 2009 by Harry Rinker for his nationally syn-dicated radio show, “Whatcha Got?” discussing the release of her book. Be-sides continuing to write and research on antiques and history, Dr. Johnson continues to practice her full time pro-fession tutoring high school students in all their major subjects, for the SATs and Regents.

Kathleen A. Filshie-Sullivan has been married for 17 years to her husband Jim, and they have one son, Ryan. Jim is the President of CBS Television Sales. Kathy and Ryan travel all around the country with him to every sport-ing event and major media event CBS holds.

Marc Hamlin ‘84 is a 19-year veteran of the Tampa Police Dept. and was recently promoted to Assistant Chief. He spent more than a year commanding the department’s Special Support Division, a task he will retain as assistant chief. He oversees the city’s major events and hurricane preparation, and runs

the department’s specialty squads, including hostage negotiation, dive and bomb teams, canine, aviation and marine patrol. He also oversees security at Tampa Bay

Buccaneers games. He has worked in all three Tampa police districts and in undercover units of the narcotics bureau and street anticrime squad. He also served nine years on the city’s Fire and Police Pension Fund, including four years as chairman. Back in his days as a student at SFP, Marc played football and worked at Camp Alvernia. Today, Marc is an active supporter of the Prep’s Florida Alumni Chapter, and he and his wife Paige have hosted several chapter receptions at their home in Valrico, FL. This past May he was inducted into the Prep’s Hall of Fame. We wish Marc heartfelt congratulations and continued success!

Amy Wolcson-Speiser was married to Rich Speiser in 1999. They have two children; a son, Thomas, who was born in 2004 and they welcomed William into the world in June 2009.

Robert J. Finnerty married Jennifer Margiotta in 2005. He worked as a po-lice officer in NYPD for six years and re-tired in 2001 to pursue a Wall Street ca-reer. He started his own firm in 2004.

Stephen Forte is the Chief Strategy Officer of Telerik, a leading vendor in Microsoft components. He sits on the board of several start-ups including Triton Works. Prior to this, he was the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and co-founder of Corzen, Inc. Stephen is also the Microsoft Regional Director for the NY Metro region and speaks regularly at industry conferences around the world. He has written several books on application and database development including “Programming SQL Server 2008” (MS Press). Prior to Corzen, Stephen served as the CTO of Zagat Survey in New York City and also was co-founder of the New York based soft-ware consulting firm The Aurora Devel-opment Group. Stephen currently lives in Hong Kong and will be returning to Mt. Everest again in September 2010.

Kevin T. Carroll was in Afghanistan, serving with the 75th Ranger Regi-ment, as part of his duties as a major in the Army Reserve. This will be his fifth deployment to Afghanistan, Iraq or elsewhere in the War on Terror since 2001. He currently lives in the Washington area with his wife Karla, and looks forward to practicing law

Janine Duffy Hughes ‘86 has been Principal for almost 20 years at St. Joseph School in the Bronx and has truly taken the school to new heights. When she became Principal in 1995, enrollment hovered at 200 students. Through a series of innovative programs and initiatives, Janine and her staff have grown the enrollment to more than double and it now stands at 474! That’s no small feat in the city of New York where so many Catholic elementary schools have been witness to enrollment declines. One of the shining achievements has been the Extended Day program at St. Joseph, which she began in 1993. It improved student achievement and allowed for extracurricular activities such as a phenomenal band program. The editors of the Wall Street Journal in an article entitled “Strike Up the Band” celebrated her students’ academic and extracurricular accomplishments in music. Each year, the vast majority of St. Joseph’s 8th graders go on to attend Catholic high schools. This year 28 out of St. Joe’s 31 graduates will be attending Catholic high schools. Two of their eighth grade girls are going on to Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, CT on full scholarship! Over 95% of St. Joseph School alumni graduate from high school on schedule in four years, compared to the public school rate of 58%.

Luis A. Silva enlisted in the US Navy after graduation. He was a Gas Turbine Systems Technician Second Class Petty Officer onboard the USS Anzio. After the Navy, he started working for Ameri-can Ref-Fuel Company in Newark, NJ as an Operations Technician. In Novem-ber of 2004, he was hired by Wyeth in Pearl River, NY as a Stationary Engineer where he is today, but the company is now Pfizer and he is now a Building Engineer.

As a junior she had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to trav-el across the world and represent the United States at the Australian Friend-ship Series, spending two weeks “Down Under” and helping the US squad to a first-place finish. Bifulco teamed up with other select top-level collegiate softball players from teams all over the United States – including nine Division I student-athletes – to wear the red, white and blue for the two-week tour. The team is sponsored by USA Athletes International, a non-profit organization that gives amateur athletes the oppor-tunity to participate in Olympic-style sporting events at the international level all over the world, while also cre-ating an athletic experience that bal-ances competition with the broadening of educational and cultural knowledge of the world. Selection for the team is based on recommendations from col-lege coaches, athletes and athletics professionals.

Bro. Robert Kent O.S.F., our Alumni Director, Math Teacher and the Varsity Baseball coach, was honored by the Frank McGuire Foundation at their Annual Hall of Fame Dinner on November 18th. Frank McGuire was a coach who instilled in his players a desire to achieve in both academics and athletics, and honorees selected by the Foundation mirror these same values. Bro. Rob-ert has been a teacher, coach and administrator at St. Francis Prep for more than 40 years and is known and loved by generations of alumni. Five Weddings and a Football Game for Father Bill Sweeney

As a priest, Father Bill Sweeney’s entire year is filled with so much. But if you had to ask the Prep’s Chaplain to name a few “high points” of the 2009-10 academic year, there is no doubt that he’d mention performing the wedding ceremonies for Phyllis Gambino ‘90 and Bill Skody (July 18th); Jean McEvoy ‘90 and John Callahan (April 24th); Geraldine Armesto ‘03 and Oliver Chadenat (April 17th); Elizabeth Giordano ‘00 and Brian West (April 16th), and Christine DeMarco ‘01 and William Ng ‘01 (July 19th). Next on his list would have to be travelling with Alumni Director Bro. Robert Kent, SFP alumni and friends out to Notre Dame for the Michigan State game last September (which was organized by Notre Dame grad Jack Cahill, SFP Class of 1967).

Bro. Ed Kent is Profiled in “Irish Voice,” Celebrates his Jubilee Year, and Wins Track Medals

Bro. Ed Kent celebrated his Golden Jubilee this past year with a host of family and friends at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. In addition, he was profiled in the Irish Voice news-paper. He also won three Gold Medals in the Empire State Games: Masters Division in the Triple Jump, the long jump, and the 100-yard dash, plus a Silver Medal in the 200 meter dash. Brother Ed is currently teaching continuing education courses on Joyce and Yeats at Queens College and Ford-ham University’s Lincoln Center Campus.

The retirement of a special teacher is a watershed event for a generation of students. We associate favorite teachers with our youth—a time when life was always exciting and schedules were simpler.

There are those who served as mentors and gave us understanding and advice. There were also the “no nonsense” teachers who challenged us and, in the process, taught us the joy of learning, helped shape our careers and our success.

We wish a fond farewell to these faculty members who retired from the Prep this June.

Al D’Andrea retired from his day-to-day responsibilities at the SFP Bookstore after 17 years, but he will continue to add to his overall total of 21 years of service to the Prep as he continues as Assistant Coach of the Varsity Baseball Team and as the transportation coordinator for the Prep’s Athletics Department fleet of vehicles.

Phyllis Gambino Skody ‘90, a Religion teacher at Prep, was married on July 18, 2009. Father Bill Sweeney, Prep’s Chaplain, performed the ceremony at American Martyrs and the reception was held at Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. In the true Prep spirit, many members of the Prep family, including faculty, staff, student body and some recent alumni, celebrated with Phyllis and William. Last year she was nominated by her peers to receive the Faculty Excellence Award. Phyllis now has to work even harder next year to top this! Congratulations to Phyllis and Bill!

It is with great sadness that we report the pass-ing of Joseph Szewczyk ‘94 following his battle with cancer. Joe gradu-ated from St. John’s Uni-versity and later joined the FDNY in 2002. He served in Far Rockaway at Engine Co. 264. He

was diagnosed in 2005 with Astrocytoma. He assisted coaching SFP Football for several years. Joe was a devout Catholic and in the true Franciscan spirit, he agreed to engage in experimental medical treatments in order to provide research material that could benefit others diagnosed with his form of cancer. Joe died on October 14 , 2009 at home, surround-ed by his family and friends.

We are saddened to report that Joseph Bennett ‘26, father of Charles ‘61, passed away early in the morn-ing on February 1st. May he rest in peace. Last February, Joe celebrated his 100th birthday with his fam-

ily and friends at his home in Tiburon, Califor-nia. He was featured in the last edition of the Grad News and pictured, proudly dressed in an SFP polo shirt and baseball cap. Joe was a 65 year member of the International Brother-hood of Electrical Workers, Local 3, and was also our oldest known living alumnus. Please remember him and the Bennett family in your prayers.

Formerly known as Brother Boniface, Jack Fugelsang was born on October 19, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. He was one of 7 children of Leonard and Adele Corrigan (Fugelsang). He is survived by his sister, Maureen Manacle (Ed).

He was educated at St. Francis Prep. and St. Francis College, and received his MA from New York University. He entered the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn in 1953 and was given the name Brother Boniface. He taught in schools in Brooklyn and at St. Anthony’s High School in Smithtown, Long Island. He married his wife, Peggy Shank in 1968. This union was blessed by three sons, John (Charmien) of New York City, Brian of Berkeley, CA, and Paul (Elaine) and their son, Endy of Brooklyn, NY. He taught and was an administrator in Longwood School District and served as an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College for 23 years. He taught for 9 years at Tidewater Community College as well. Jack lived in Palm Coast, FL for the past 9 years. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He passed away on August 2nd.

There were many winning teams at Prep in the year 1957, but none captured the imagination and enthusiasm more than the Catholic school basketball rivalries. In the midst of all the talent, one stood out

from all the rest: the center for St. Francis Prep, Tom Stith. One of the first African-American students to play in the CHSAA, Tom and his brother, Sam, who was one year older, brought national recognition to St. Francis basketball. Tom dominated the league. He scored in double figures in a seemingly effortless manner. With his brilliant play at center, the Prep won three consecutive City championships and one national title. Twice voted a High School All-American, he broke the league’s scoring record for total points in his senior year. Fans came from all over the East Coast to watch him play. He had a gracious manner that made him the model of a true gentleman. Tom and his brother Sam ‘56, were the two greatest basketball players to ever wear the Prep’s uniform. They both went on to St. Bonaventure University. Together they put the “Bonnies” on the map. Tom was twice voted a collegiate All-American. He and Sam led St. Bonaventure to national prominence and successful runs in the NIT and the NCEA. For years, Tom held the all-time scoring record at the upstate New York school and his record for the most points scored in a single season still stands almost 50 years later.

After graduation, Tom and Sam both went on to professional careers. Tom was the second round draft pick in the nation and played for the Knicks. After his basketball career, he was a sales executive for Shell Oil and Cablevision. Tom and Sam were inducted into the Prep’s Hall of Fame in 2007 and they had their uniforms retired by the Prep at last October’s “North 6th Street Reunion.” Tom passed away this June. He was 71.

Anthony C. Armstead was born March 10, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School. Upon graduation, he received an athletic/academic scholarship

to St. Francis Prep when it was located on N. 6th Street in Brooklyn. He excelled in football and track and received “All City” and “All Met” honors and was voted to “Teen Magazine” Eastern All American Team. In 1958, he graduated as a member of the Dean’s Academic Honor Society and received a football scholarship to Holy Cross College in Worchester, MA, where he continued his athletic career and earned Bachelor of Science in History. He began teaching in the NYC Public School system and retired in 1996. During his teacher career he worked in many capacities, teaching math and social studies and also serving as an administrator. He was also an assistant football coach at St. Francis Prep and Boys and Girls High School. He also devoted time as Boy Scout Leader and was a member of many church and school committees. Anthony passed away on July 17, 2010 and leaves behind two daughters, Tonie-Lynee and Brenda and two brothers Joseph ‘58 and Thomas ‘60, and a host of grandchildren and friends.

We will always re-member Frank for his infectious smile, warmth and gracious-ness. In the year be-fore his passing, Frank participated in many SFP Alumni events, including his class’s

Golden Anniversary Reunion, the Wash-ington, D.C. Alumni Chapter reception, and the 2009 NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade. He was looking forward to, and had regis-tered for the “North 6th Street” reunion and passed away after a brief illness only a few weeks before. Frank lived the spirit of St. Francis and always displayed his strong Terrier Pride. We will miss him dearly. Please remember Frank and his family in your prayers.

William “Billy” Barnes ‘79 was killed in a tragic construction accident on the Throgs Neck Bridge in August 2009 while performing his role as a construction engineer. He was 48. Shortly after his

passing, Billy’s friends and family organized a scholarship fund raising event at the Port Washington Country Club to celebrate his life. It was well attended by an eclectic crowd of neighborhood friends, family, representatives of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and members of his motorbike club. His widow, Toni, noted that “Billy had only one criterion for friendship and it was that you had to be a good person.” It was evident this evening that he surrounded himself with many good people. New York Daily News reporter, Dennis Hamill, penned a story on Billy that summed up his life really well: “Bright Life Flickers Out in the Wind on the Throgs Neck Bridge.” In it, Billy’s younger brother Chris remembered him as “The guy who could do anything. Amazing mechanic. Great electrician. Biker, skier, loving dad, Little League coach. Protective big brother.” Please remember Billy’s family in your prayers.

For 35 years Tom Finn coached a variety of sports on every level including freshman basketball, JV basket-ball, JV football, and varsity girls basketball. On April 23, 2009 Tom was assisting the boys

varsity baseball team when was rushed to the hospital with what was initially thought to be a heart attack. He underwent an MRI and it revealed the existence of several tumors throughout his body. Throughout his illness Tom continued to support SFP as his health would allow. In June he spoke at the Prep’s annual baseball dinner. It was his last pubic appearance. He passed away in October 12th after his six-month battle with cancer. Tom was so well regarded by the Prep com-munity. Athletic Director Sal Fischetti said, “He loved the Prep and would do anything for the school at anytime. His heart was with the school.” In 2002, Prep named him an Honor-ary Alumnus at its annual Hall of Fame Induc-tion Ceremony. This June, the Alumni Asso-ciation honored Tom’s memory (along with Coach Tim Leary ‘’63) at the 17th Annual Golf Classic. The event sold out. In addition to his many friends, Tom is survived by his loving sis-ter Kathy Finn-Freeley ’79, and brothers Brian, Larry, and Patrick, niece Melissa Finn-Feeley, and nephew Stephen Finn.

The memorial bricks on the Pathway to St. Francis are blessed prior to Mass and members of the Terrier Athletics program are honored with the “raising of the memorial banners” in the gym. Afterwards, a complimentary brunch is served for all guests.
