Easter Blessings, Holy Week seems so long ago. You may recall that Holy Week was warm and spring gushed forth because of the warm weather. With the moon being right and the hope that warm weather may persist, I planted a few things in my garden: potatoes, corn, lettuce, peas, onions, and beans. At the time I thought these would most likely be able to withstand a few cold spells. Now six weeks later, all that remains are a few sprouts of potatoes. It also rained on Easter Sunday and an old farmer’s tale says that rain on Easter will bring forth seven weeks of rainy Sundays. I did not mark the Sundays it rained, but certainly we have had nearly seven weeks of cool weather – cold if you are like me – I like it hot! Though my hope for a fruitful garden harvest may be daunted, I am going to plant again be-cause my hope is not extinguished! Hope is accentuated in the second letter today. St. Peter writes that we should always be ready to give an explanation for the reason for our hope. Yes, the hot weather will prevail at some point, but my hope lies in Christ. Countless times I have read and seen people who, having lived on the edges of following Christ nearly all their lives, make a profound turn around. It takes an incredible amount of courage and determination to make profound changes to one’s life. St. Augustine once said that, “hope has two daughters, anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the same.” Eight weeks ago we lost ac-cess to attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist. Now the restriction is being lifted. Yet the virus continues to push its way into more and more people here locally. I also see many peo-ple around us are done with the isolation. Going into the stores, I see few people wearing mask aside from all the clerks. A mask protects me less than it protects you from the spread of this virus, and so it will take courage to open up our churches so that we will not be responsi-ble for keeping the virus spreading, possibly even causing the churches to close again. We must pray for our pastors and church leaders to have the courage to make some difficult choices in the weeks ahead. This being the month devoted to Mary, join Pope Francis in pray-ing daily for our church leaders to receive wisdom, solicitude, and generosity as they care for all the people, especially the most vulnerable. The way we do church has changed. Where we will go is uncertain. Hope calls not for a return to the way things were, but for courage to bring Christ’s message of truth (the way, the truth, and the life) into people’s lives in their present situation. Yes, I will replant the garden because the joy of seeing God’s creation grow into something beautiful gives me hope. May Easter joy fill you with hope! Deacon Jim

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA (1381-1457) May 22 If you’re ever in Philadelphia on May 22, for-get parking anywhere near Saint Rita’s shrine. Cars line streets and fill medians as throngs pack a candlelight vigil and six Masses, honoring this patroness of lost causes, hopeless situations, and—as her statue in countless churches built by twentieth-century immigrants testifies—difficult marriages, troubled homes, and alienated chil-dren. Wise people warn, be careful what you pray for. “Divine Savior,” Rita prayed, “let me suffer like you!” Obedient to parents who refused her wish to become a nun, Rita married a man who returned her devotion with twenty years of abuse. When enemies murdered him, Rita’s two sons swore revenge. Paintings depict her pointing the angry boys toward Christ crucified, whom she begged to restrain them. Within the year, both sons died. Alone now, Rita went to the convent but was refused. The nuns feared violence, since one of them was related to the murderer. continues to operate on a limited basis to en-sure maintenance is conducted and bills are

paid. You can imagine the drop in tithing when we are not able to celebrate Mass. Please util-

Heritage Hills High School and Middle School’s Par-ent and Teacher Support Group (PATS) has a food, clothing, health and beauty aid program. This pro-gram is in need of HBA items (laundry detergent, body soap, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste). These items will be available to our local families utilizing the Grab N Go breakfast and lunch program that North Spencer Schools offer. Due to these very challenging times many of our families are in need of basic necessities. Grab N Go is cur-rently serving 950+ meals (breakfast and lunch) per day to North Spencer families. Please help us to of-fer more resources to our families.There will be red tubs in the middle school front office M-F from 8:00-3:00. THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine some-body coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time think-ing about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit. - Copyright © J.
