Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor

We welcome Lent this week with hearts open to God’s special grace that he bestows upon us during forty days of reflection and introspection. At St. Francis we offer many opportunities for that. Please see our detailed schedule in this bulletin, tear it out and post it in your home. Please take advantage of all those opportunities. In this column I would like to spotlight some. Shrove Tuesday of this week allows us to enter Lent free of sins so that we can use the forty days to improve our spiritual life. Ash Wednesday invites us to reflect upon the formula as the ashes are placed on our heads: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Yes, we wish to repent of our major sins and do lots of cleaning our souls of even the little sins that separate us from God and from each other. I think it is very beneficial to go even deeper and identify our fundamental sin or temptation. What is it that drives us, what is the common thread or root of all or many of our sins? Then, what does “Believe in the Gospel” mean? I think it means to read the four Gospels, meditate upon them, to know Jesus, his words, his advice, his compassion, his call to perfection. We then discover the meaning of the word “gospel” which is “good news”. Following Jesus without sin enables us to love, and love leads to happiness, and happiness is very good news! And to give us a great boost to begin the process is our Parish Mission which we arranged a year ago in order to secure two very popular Franciscan priests who are famous for their retreats (the young high school student Zach Webb heard one of them years ago and was moved to consider a vocation and now he is Father Zach Webb!). They will be preaching at all Masses next weekend and inviting us to accompany them for talks Monday through Wednesday, and in case somebody still needs the sacrament of Reconciliation, those two priests and we your three parish priests will be available during a Penance service on Thursday night. Please join us for this spiritual journey.
