ST. FRANCIS OF A SSISI 37

at home with themselves, at home with their conscience and their God, at home in their own homes, at home with a sinless and happy monotony."

At home! Since I transcribed those words, that gentle singing soul has himself indeed " gone home." May he rest in peace amid the harmonies his life anticipated! I am glad to have brought anew to light a passage which reveals so much of its

writer. Read its last sentence again: it is an admirable forecast of what his whole life was to be.

GEORGE O'NEILL, S.J.

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

(FOR THE STATUE BY DELLA ROBBIA)

A MAN Of sorrows, even as his Lot d, And yet of calm, unutterable bliss, He stands coarse-clad and girt with a coarse cord, And writ on his marred countenance is Peace. E'en as his Master, he has ta'en a Bride His Lady Poverty-for weal or woe; And his resemblance to the Crucified Those nails which pierce his hands and feet shall show. See how he bears the Cross-a slender weiglt, And lightened by consuming love for Christ,

Which so convinces him of his deep debt, 'That he to long for suffering is enticed.

But 0, for words the glowing love to tell Of the Poor Little One whom Christ loved well!

ALICE GILL.
