After all, many of those living in poverty or on the street do not possess the same opportunity or desire for personal hygiene that we take for granted. As a result, the accumulation of dirt and grime that has built up gives them a distinctive, and, quite frankly, offensive presence. What I find amazing is that none of them recognize this. They have become so accustomed to living in squalor that it has desensitized them to its repugnance. Perhaps surprisingly, however, the same thing happens to us as well. Even though our bodily hygiene may be more refined, the same type of thing can happen to our souls. Sin is to our soul what dirt is to our body. Just like dirt accumulates on our bodies, making it offensive to all, so, too, sin accumulates on our soul, making it offensive to all. Additionally, we can become so used to our sinfulness that we fail to recognize our offensiveness. Perhaps, the most frequent way this reality is manifested is with our insensitivity. One of the things that scares me most about meeting Jesus after my death is recognizing all the ways I could have really helped someone but failed to recognize the opportunity. This is one of the most damning effects of our sin. Instead of noticing the needs and desires of others, we are absorbed by the needs and desires of our own. This is most perfectly seen with our attitude toward the most Holy Eucharist. Simply think for a moment about what the Church teaches about the bread and wine that are brought forward during the offertory at Mass. We believe that this bread and wine is truly and substantially changed, not merely to something special, but into the very Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ that walked on this earth some two thousand years ago. What could we possibly call our reaction to this truth but insensitive? Imagine if Scott Frost or Taylor Swift or even Donald Trump arrived at Mass when the bells ring during the consecrations. Undoubtedly, everyone’s attention would be instantly captivated by their celebrity. Yet none of these, nor any other human being holds a candle to the ‘celebrity’ of the Divine Son of God, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Yet, how attentive are we at His coming? Moreover, are we insensitive to this greatest of all possible guests when we invite Him into our home at Holy Communion; a home not made with human hands but rather the home we call the temple of our body? How often does it happen that we receive this most succulent of food in hands that have been dirtied, not by the soil of hard work, but by the filthiness of sin? How many times have we received this guest into mouths that soiled by foul language, gossip, slander, detraction, sexual indiscretion or lies? Is it really any wonder why the experience seems quite ordinary? How many of us make more than a cursory sign of reverence or even respond with an audible ‘Amen’? Have become so accustomed to the grime of this insensitivity on our souls that we no longer recognize our offensiveness? Of course, our insensitivity toward the Eucharist may reach farther that this. After all, this King of Kings, this Lord of Lords doesn’t simply abandon us once He has united with us in Holy Communion. Far from it! In fact, we are so blessed to be able to be with Jesus in a special way on those days when He is exposed on our altars! But, even if circumstances prevent us from taking advantage of this opportunity, Jesus’ presence still abides in every Church in our parish, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Of course, since none of our Churches are ever locked, we can take advantage of this audience whenever the mood strikes us. Friends, One of the first things you notice working with the less fortunate is what some call, “the aroma of Christ”. *DIAPER BRIGADE: Please con'nue to bring in supplies for this wonderful cause! Dona'on basket is located in St. Francis Church by the elevator by the parish hall. The diapers that are made are sent to poor families in Chinandega, Nicaragua. WE TAKE DONATIONS OF T-SHIRTS AND OTHER SUPPLIES, such as sew-on Velcro (not the s'ck-on type of Velcro

since this tends to pull off), elas'c and wide bias tape. T-shirts with holes or stains are accepted since many parts are cut from the shirt. We are also now accep'ng sheets for material. Anyone interested in sewing can obtain the pa!ern and instruc'ons from Georgia Hunsley (402-920-0108), who is heading up this project. Thank you to everyone who has already donated supplies and their 'me to this cause!

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) Yet, how insensitive we can be to this most magnanimous act of love! After all, if Scott Frost was willing to meet personally with any Husker fan at any time in our own area, or if Taylor Swift was willing to give a personal concert with any music fan at any time in our own area, would anything keep us from that appointment? Well, there is something infinitely greater than any of these jokers with us in the Church. Our God loves us so much that He is willing to humiliate Himself to become present and available to us in this way. Have we become too insensitive to respond? In Christ,

Prayer for Your Child on First Communion Day Good and loving God, source of all that is good, at the Last Supper Your Son, Jesus, gave the sacrament

of His body and blood to His disciples and to the whole Church. May the Eucharist our child has

received for the first time today, keep Him close to Jesus, and unite us in love for all of God's children. May the presence of Christ fill the hearts of all who receive Him on this First Communion day. May the

sacrifice of Christ teach our child how to love others with all his heart and may the sacrament he has

received help him live as a worthy child of God. Amen.
