As I write this Bellringer article, I hear the chirping of many birds outside my office window. They are not to be ignored.

They are in the lineage of God’s prophets, announcing the love and presence of God! Nature is God’s first herald and healer! As I turned to look to see if they were clus-ters of birds, or birds darting from branch to branch in the eucalyptus, I was still amazed at how many wildflowers dot the hills. It is springtime indeed! Which means it is also the season of Eastertide.Eastertide! As I ended my sermon on Eas-ter Sunday, I asked, “What are you going to do with your resurrected life? Because Jesus lives, we live! We are meant to live as Easter people. Within us is the grace, the constant renewal of the Spirit of Jesus. Do you seek to live in that blessed assurance

each morning when you wake up? How can you let Eastertide remind you of your resurrected life? You can make changes. Break habits that are not life-giving. Greet strangers. Listen to understand. At a session with adults preparing to be confirmed or received into our church or to reaffirm their baptismal vows, we were talking the other night of the blessings and challenges of being a Christian in today’s world. Maybe some words or phrases in the following poem by Edward Hays might inspire you to think about, pray about and make choices based on the difference Easter is meant to make in your one precious life?

Preach the Easter message at all times and use words when necessary! Live your resur-rected life with joyful abandon even in the face of all that challenges. A Psalm of Resurrection (excerpts)From the blast of the birthing of ten thousand galaxies,

Eastertide season is celebrated as a single joyful feast, indeed as the "great Lord's Day".

Each Sunday of the season is treated as a Sunday of Easter, and, after the Sunday of the Resurrec-tion, they are named Second Sunday of Easter, Third Sunday of Easter, etc. up to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while the whole fifty-day period concludes with Pentecost Sunday. The season is marked with white vestments, extra candles, the presence of the paschal candle near the altar, and at the 10am service sung parts for the Great Thanksgiving. We include more alleluias and The Confession of Sin is absent.

The Lord is risen indeed!

Live it!

Outreach at St. Francis“ Love God, Love Others, Serve the World”

Our St. Francis family is very active in supporting several programs in our area, around the Diocese, and the world. To see details and pictures of each area, please visit us on the web at www.stfrancispalosverdes.org/outreach. The following pages give details of the programs we currently support and their immediate needs. Please consider how you might be able to make a difference. Additional information is available by contacting our Shepherd for Outreach Sue Egan, via email at [email protected], or via the church office on 310 375-4617.

• No dirty, stained, or torn items.• Donations should be clean, unstained, and whole (not needing mending).• Check expiration dates on canned/boxed foods; we don’t want to run the risk of making people ill.• All donations should be bagged or in small enough boxes to fit through the opening of the Bin;

no loose clothes or shoes, please.• Computers - please talk with Sue Egan, Outreach Shepherd first; needs can be different for the

different organizations.• Blue Bin sorters have lists of which organization needs what items during the year; please trust us to

get your things to where they can do the most good. • Each organization is very grateful for your donations; please accept their thanks as well as the thanks

of the Blue Bin Team!

Thank you!

Note - We are no longer collecting used ink/toner cartridges for Mama Hill’s Help, as the pro-gram we used is no longer lucrative for Mama.

Your Contributions Count - at The Blue Bin! A big thank you goes out to Sue, our Outreach Shepherd and Blue Bin advocate; to Jayne, our Blue Bin scheduler, and to everyone who has sorted and delivered our dona-tions! Also, thanks to suggestions from our new blue bin sorters, it has been exciting to see that we have added different recipients for the Blue Bin items. In addition to donating items to Mama Hills, St. Luke's, and Harbor Interfaith*, we have now started donating some items to the homeless Ministry at Saint Andrews Presbyterian and to the Salvation Army. Thank you to all. Hank Gatlin"Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of those who are members of my family, he did it to me." Matthew 25:40*HIS specifically has requested men’s and women’s suits, slacks and jackets for appropriate attire for job interviews..

Episcopal Church Women (ECW)All St Francis Women are Automatically Members of the ECW

Among other events, the ECW sponsors the Annual St Francis Antique Show.As in any Episcopal church, all women of the parish are automatically a member. In addition, many of us are members of one or more of the Guilds, which are smaller groups who meet for social fel-lowship and also to support various outreach or charitable causes.

How Do I Join?We would love to see you at any of our events or meetings - just come along! Check out our Website Guilds page, and if any one or more appeals to you, contact the Chair for more information. If you ever want to learn more about any of the guilds of the ECW, details and meeting times can be found on the par-ish website or feel free to ask me.

Anna Eakins, ECW co-PresidentContact via the church office on - 310 375 4617.

Thanks to guidance from our Diocese’s Seeds of Hope program, St. Francis is in the process of establishing a food program through which we can share the abundance of the fruit from the trees at our homes, and in the future from fruit trees at St. Francis, with those in our community who are hungry and in need. It’s a two-pronged approach.

First, do you have an over-abundance of fruit that you would like to share? Is it just too much to pick by your-self? If you answered yes to these questions, this program is for you. Please sign up in the church office and let us know how many trees you have and what types (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, avocado, apricots, kumquats, persimmons, tangerines, clementines, pomegranates, apples, nectarines, plums, etc.) If you can pick extra fruit and drop it off at church, that would be great. If you need help picking, we can arrange for pickers from the parish and/or from the diocese. We can pick the fruit, leave some fruit with you, and take the extra fruit to share with those in our community through programs we are involved with like St. Luke’s Breakfast program, Harbor Interfaith, Mama Hills, etc. It’s a win-win for all involved.

Second, we have received approval from the Walker fam-ily to use the interest from funds in the Walker Memorial Fund to plant five fruit trees (orange, lime, lemon, tanger-ine, and clementine) and some creeping rosemary in the John Walker Memorial Garden, which is located in our lower parking lot. Work Day - Saturday May 6, 9am - noon.If you want to come early John Henebry will be there from 6am. You are welcome at any time!If you would like to help transform the Walker Memo-rial Garden, please join us on Saturday, May 6 for a short work day. Please sign up in the church office or contact our Seeds of Hope Co-Chairs, John Henebry ([email protected]) and Hank Gatlin ([email protected]). Thank you for considering to be a part of this exciting and life giving ministry!

It is our hope and prayer, as Paul said in his Letter to the

Romans, that “we might bear fruit for God.”

Meet The Women of the Parish - Albertine James Bellows

I was born in Los Angeles in May 1927 to Dr. Allison Gale James and Eveline Chase James, and have lived my entire life in Los Angeles County.

My father was a 1926 graduate of USC Dental School and my mother had graduated the same year from Pomona College. I was named Albertine after a great Grandmother on my father’s side. At the time we were living in a house on Hobart Blvd. just west of the USC campus. Fourteen months later my sister Jennifer was born. In 1936 we moved west to Beverly Hills. After schooling at Brent-wood Town & Country, Marlborough and University High School, I graduated. After high school I went to work for my father in his dental office in Beverly Hills doing all of the monthly billing statements and bookkeeping. This was where I found my affinity for numbers, and I started doing statements for several other dentists as well.I worked for a time as a personal assistant to actress Billie Burke, who was Glinda the Good Witch, in the Wizard of Oz movie. She was doing a television show at Channel 11 and I would drive her to and from the station. I wanted to become a part of the television industry as it was the budding new frontier. I went to Sawyers Business School in Westwood to get my credentials. After graduating I was hired, for a short time, as the secretary to the Program Manager at KTTV Channel 11. From there I went to KHJ Channel 9 where I worked for 3 years. I married Harry Alvin Bellows Jr. on July 11, 1953 at All Saints in Beverly Hills, my home parish, where my father was on the Ves-try. I left KHJ on March 31, 1955 and 1 year later to the day on March 31, 1956 my son Harry Alvin Bellows III was born. We were living in Pacific Palisades. We later moved to Brentwood Park and there on September 19, 1963 my second son James Albert Bellows was born.In November 1966 we moved to Palos Verdes. At first I fig-ured we could go back and forth to All Saints on Sundays, but by the fall of 1967 we made the decision to transfer to St. Francis. I remember Mr. Tourigney coming right over after he had received the transfer notice. I was in the Altar Guild and served as Altar Directress. I can remember be-ing at the church after Christmas Eve services ironing fair linens at 1am.

I worked in the kitchen at the very first antique show in 1969. In 1978 I went back to work at The Broadway in the credit office. I worked there for 9 years. In 1987, after I had left The Broadway I ran into Sally Hill, who was General Chairman of the Antique Show, and she said to come help. 30 years later, and after more than 20 years as General Chairman, I am still involved with the Antique Show. This year I will be celebrating my 90th birthday at the Opening Night of the show on May 31.

As May turns into June, the focus of the ECW becomes the annual Antiques show.

The show involves many members of the parish with a wide range of opportunities available. I hope you will consider participating with either setting up or tearing down; kitchen/food service; decorating; baking or preserving; greeting guests and most importantly, coming to enjoy the show itself.

This is our major fundraiser and this year enabled the ECW to give more than $16,000 to parish activities and more than $7,000 to outreach. Details are in the Annual report.

Questions? Call Anna (310) 279-0701 or leave a message with the church office (310) 375-4617.

For more about this yea’s Show (the 49th!!!), see pp. 3 an 4.
