SEPTEMBER 3rd, 2017 There is a powerful scene in the play “A Man for All Seasons”, about the final years of St. Thomas More’s life in the time of Henry VIII, which later became an Oscar-winning best picture of 1966. Thomas is on trial for treason, and a former friend of his, Sir Richard Rich, is called forth as a witness against him. Rich has spent much time climbing the political power ladder using all sorts of corrupt tactics. Rich offers a fabricated version of a past conversa-tion with the future saint, and this perjured testimony effectively makes More a condemned man. As the wit-ness sets to depart the courtroom, Thomas asks if he may inspect the chain of office Rich is wearing. Learn-ing that the seal is that of the District Attorney for Wales, Thomas looks up at Rich from his chair and re-calls that significant part of today’s Gospel by asking, “Why Richard, what profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? But for Wales?” Richard struts away silently and smugly. With his perjury, Rich has surely satisfied the demands of the powers that be, and he continues that delicate dance with evil compromise and lies that are the “stuff” of the corrupt politician. Compromise with the truth is one of the temptations that confronts us this late summer day, as we listen to Matthew 16 and today’s other Scripture Read-ings. They are about our choice for God and all that entails. Even if, like Jeremiah, we feel “duped” by God in accepting His terms at Baptism when life deals us an unexpected “hand” of cards. When we suddenly feel unable to handle the problem, we must believe that loyalty to God will empower us to triumph. There comes a point in life, for each of us at different times, when we recognize the presence of the cross. Not Jesus’ Cross, of course. That was unique and all encompassing of pain and suffering. But a splinter of His cross for sure. We get hurt. We suf-fer. Physically, mentally, spiritually. Maybe all three simultaneously. We feel alone. One could say that our passport to Toyland, that place of innocence and imma-turity, fun and frolic, has expired, and we cannot go back. We have reached the archway of “the Big M”–maturity. As we walk through it, perhaps as teens, the transition is often downright daunting and tough. But that is precisely the time when our trust in God is seen for what it is: a mature reliance on a Person who says He loves us as no one else can. There is that in-comparable conviction that we are not alone, which has all the comfort of a loving, arms-tight hug. We begin to experience what St. Paul did, which he writes about in the Letter to the Romans: “the will of God is good, pleasing and perfect.” Doesn’t that sound heav-enly? Especially against our daily experience of the bad, the unpleasant and the imperfect? Ah, yes! So let’s get there by taking the next best step we need to take this coming week, and not be concerned with gaining this whole world. Of course, I’ll not deny there are some small perks that come from profiting in the things of this world. Carefully backing into a parking lot space, the driver of a big, heavy, old Rolls Royce was angered when a teen-ager in a sports car zipped in and stole his space. Get-ting out of the car, the youth grinned and said, ”You got to be young and quick to be able to do that, Pops.” The older gent grinned too, and continued to back up his Rolls, crunching the tiny sports car into a total wreck. “And you have to be old and rich to be able to do that, Son,” he said. “ Reflection by, Rev. Leonard N. Peterson”

They will begin on September 12 (Wednesday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 am) and September 13 (Wednesday Evenings from 7:00 pm to 8:15

pm.) Each week we will explore the readings for the upcoming Sunday Liturgy, pray morning or evening prayer and share a Reflection on Pope

Francis’ Joy Of The Gospel. It is a wonderful op-portunity to gather and share your faith with oth-ers. It is amazing how the Spirit of God works as

we often hear God speak to us through another person’s sharing. The meetings are held in the

Ryan Room of the Rectory. Come and See……..Some blessing will be there for you as you gather with others who want to give some time to praying to and learning about the Lord.
