From the desk of Father James

Continuing with the theme of seeds that we have heard about in the gospel readings from the past two weekends, I would like to simply offer a few “seeds” for your reflection and consideration this week-end.

I want to thank Bishop Steiner (5:30 pm Saturday and 5:00 pm Sunday) and Fr. Tim Bushy (8:00 am and 10:30 am Sunday) for presiding at the Masses this weekend. I left Friday morning after Mass to go to Spokane, WA and spend the weekend with our high school youth that are attending Steubenville NW Conference. This event takes place every summer and it is an amazing opportunity for our youth to hear from a number of great speakers, spend time in Eucharistic Adoration and worship God with teens from all over the Pacific Northwest. I ask that you keep them in prayer that they will come back alive and on fire for the Lord. Also, pray that our adults accompanying our teens are kept strong as well!

I want to thank our St. Francis School parents that came out and did a number of clean up projects around the school. They power washed the sidewalks around the library, cleaned up the picnic table area and did some weed whacking around the playground. There are more projects coming up! Thank you! If you would be interested in helping the Campus Beautification Team please contact Gretchen in the school office and she can get you in contact with Michael Corella who is heading up this project.

I also want to thank all of the various members of our parish that have been helping keep our grounds looking great and our flowers watered and alive during these hot summer days. There are still a num-ber of areas that need attention and we are always looking for volunteers. So if you want to adopt a garden area to work on, please see Sheila in the parish office.

Finally for your consideration, as you heard announced last weekend, we are beginning the process of preparing the schedules for our various weekend ministries. If you recall, we decided to cancel coffee socials for the summer because of low attendance and specifically because we are in need of more fam-ilies to host this ministry. Since then we have had one family step up to join those that are already cof-fee social ministers. We are still in need of more individuals and families to sign up for this ministry. I would ask that you consider if this is a ministry that you and your family may want to participate in. It is a good way to serve our community in an easy way and to get to know more people in the parish. Also, volunteering for this ministry will keep this important ministry going strong in the year to come. Please contact the parish office to sign up. Thank you.

Have a blessed week!! Fr. James

In the Spirit of St. Francis…

Evangelize Your Kids in the CarEvangelize Your Kids in the CarEvangelize Your Kids in the Car

Use your vehicle as a vehicle to bring your kids closer to the Lord . . . and closer to heaven.

by Michelle Gelineau, Pbgrace.com

Whether you drive a Subaru hatchback or a 14-passenger monster van, it makes no difference. Either one can be transformed into an evangelizing, faith-sharing, Scripture-teaching prayer center on wheels.

That hunk of metal is your own private classroom and/or retaining cell, whichever way you choose to look at it. As your family climbs inside, don’t make the mistake of letting the screens be turned on. Satan would love it if

each miniature human was mindlessly taken in by flashing images your entire ride. When the screen is on, with games or videos, the disengagement of your children is complete. The beauty of an automobile is that when

those little bodies are clicked safely into place, there is nowhere for them to go. You have their full attention.

Even if your children are six feet away in the back of a 14-passenger cargo van, they can still hear your voice.

Make your time together happy and light. Regardless of how much tension there may have been while getting

ready, once the wheels start turning, begin anew. Put on your liveliest sing-song voice and lead everyone in prayer with, “Good morning! We are going to thank the Lord for this beautiful day! Who has something they

want to thank Jesus for?” You can begin and let everyone else chime in.

Then say something like, “OK everyone, who has something they want to pray about this morning?” Let each

person add their own intentions out loud. Perhaps you have a lesson that you’re going over in your faith for-mation class or something you want to teach. You could also learn the St. Michael Prayer, the books of the Bi-

ble, talk about what Father spoke about on Sunday in his homily, or put on a Christian song and sing. Laugh and enjoy the time learning together.

Those are the moments you want to seize. Those are the times that you don’t want to be filled with crabbiness and rushing to get to one place or another. Don’t zone out when you get in the car. Use it as your place to take

back your children’s attention and introduce them to new topics in the faith. Be open and think about things

you can learn in the car together. Most importantly: talk, talk and talk! Focus on praying for other people. Teach intercessory prayer. Try praying to a different saint each day. The options are many.

As you’re driving, if you see a police car or ambulance going by with the siren on, take a moment and pray to-gether for peace within that situation. Pray for God to be with them. Give your children the opportunity to think

about the Lord even in these little everyday circumstances. Spark those flames of faith. Spark those flames of love for Jesus and the thought that he is with us each moment of every day. Use your vehicle as a vehicle to

bring your kids closer to the Lord . . . and closer to heaven.

Pantry Needs: canned tuna, canned meats (chicken, ham, etc.), cereal

Hope Diner host: St Paul Lutheran Team

In the Gospel read-ing a few weeks ago, Jesus tells a crowd the parable of the seed: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and

ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” Well, since it’s June, when I hear “seeds and sowing” I immediately think about growing food and eating the summer harvest. Food is life. Growing food is creating life. Growing food natu-rally without pesticides and free from biotechnology is creating natural life. Growing food with pesticides and using seeds modified by biotechnology is constructing unnatural life. If food is life, then eating is more than an-other checkbox on our daily to-do-list. Eating sustains life. The act of eating is full participation in life itself. Eating is a moral act. We show our support for what we believe in by where we spend our money and how we spend our time. The food we spend our money on is a statement, intentional or not, about what we choose to eat. Therefore, eating is a moral act. The food we eat is not manna that fell from heaven. It is grown, harvested, pack-aged, shipped and sold. The food we purchase is more than items on a grocery shelf or a farmer’s stand. It is product behind which are people and (farming) practices. Here are three examples: - Fruits and vegetables may be more expensive because fresh, nutritious food costs more that high-calorie, low-cost food. - Is it preferable to sup-port local food producers instead of the food-industrial complex (agribusiness)? - Fair trade grown food ensures farmers earn a fair wages. We reap what we sow. We eat what we’re willing to pay for.

"Natural Family Planning (NFP) is a unique form of fertility education. Specifically, NFP is the title for the moral, natural and healthy, modern and sci-entifically reliable methods of family planning. These methods teach married couples how to identi-fy and understand their combined signs of fertility. This information then helps married couples plan to achieve or postpone a pregnancy. NFP is morally good because it helps married couples respect God’s design for married love." ~Theresa Notare, PhD, Assistant Director, NFP Program, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Sunday, July 30 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 868 At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s suc-cess is the positive involvement of parents.

It's that time again to be thinking about sharing your extra berries, peaches and apples. When you are freezing or canning, please remember to put pie sized portions away for the "Holy Rollers". Just freeze the fruit; it is not necessary to make pie filling. Keep the fruit in your freezer until asked to bring the fruit in for pie mak-ing in early November.
