Question of the Week

Question for Children: What is the most important thing in your life? Question for Youth: It is easy to get self-centered and greedy. What do you have in your life that is unnecessary? In your life, what keeps you close to God? What distracts you from your relationship with God? Question for Adults: What wisdom do you pull out of this reading to help you set priorities in your life?

"I shall accept whatever they will do to me provided they save the child" (St. Gianna Molla) Reflection: In 1962, Saint Gianna Beretta Molla died after giving birth to her fourth child. She was a physician herself, and understood the risks of her own complications in pregnancy, but steadfastly refused abortion. Some would question her decision, given that she already had three born children. However, nothing would have harmed those children more than if she had aborted their sister, and nothing blessed them more than the example of a mother who gave her life for her child. Prayer: Saint Gianna, pray for us, that we may imitate your selfless love. Amen.

Amen.

HITTING IT BIG It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he’d want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It’s exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this “common wisdom” makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. We will not achieve the future security we pursue, and we will lose the present moment in the chase. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WORRY Don’t tell me that worry doesn’t do any good. I know better. The things I worry about never happen. —Anonymous

We received several responses concerning the phones not being answered and calls were routed to the answering machine. This has been corrected. As you may have noticed, Cecilia Newby (CC), who was absent on extended medical leave, is now back in the office and Raymond has been hired in the position of Office Assistant. Besides these two individuals, several volunteers, such as Marilyn, Evelyn, Jo, Grace, and Debbie have also made themselves available, on selected days, to answer the phones. For suggestions or questions on the survey results, feel free to contact any pastoral council member, Ursula at 909-797-2533 ext. 225 and, maybe next time, when you visit the office, you welcome CC back and say “hello” to Raymond, the newest staff member.

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY “How to Survive the Holidays”

For someone who is grieving the death of a loved one, one of the many difficult moments is coping with special days such as birthdays, anniversaries, thanksgivings and other holidays that occur throughout the year. Because we are grieving, these holidays have a tendency to sneak up on us, leaving us totally unprepared. On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Bereavement Ministry offers a special session on “How to Survive the Holidays,” scheduled from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. If you are interested in attending this session, please contact Ursula Benitez at 909-797-2533 ext. 225 to sign-up.

Stephen Ministry … Jesus is always the center of our Stephen Ministry: Loving, giving, supporting, molding us into the people and caregivers He wants us to be. One of the tools we use to illustrate and emphasize that fact is called “The Care Giver’s Compass”. It is a diagram of what it means to be a Stephen Minister. In the center is Jesus with his love and awesome power, and all his wonderful attributes. We see him transforming us into Stephen Ministers, providing each of us with the qualities needed for this ministry: Love and compassion, strong faith in God, the necessary skills for service, and the qualities that make us trustworthy and effective. This is not limited to the Stephen Ministry. God always provides and enables those serving in His ministries with the qualities and skills needed to carry out the mission. We, as Stephen Ministers, realize that these are wonderful gifts God gives us...empowering us in the ministry, and providing the means through which God heals. We know that Jesus is the Healer...you and I are only the vessel or the instrument through which He works, but that in itself is amazing! Jesus’ love is the foundation of what we do. We realize that our caring is motivated and made possible through Jesus. To HIM, we owe everything!

Would you like to volunteer to be a

Wedding Coordinator? All weddings at St. Frances X. Cabrini Church require the use of a Wedding Coordinator. The main role of the Wedding Coordinator is to help lead the rehearsal on the night before the wedding. On the day of the wedding, the Wedding Coordinator arrives at least 1 hr prior to the ceremony to set up for the celebration, assist the celebrant and wedding party during the ceremony, and help pick-up after the ceremony. Rehearsals are a 1 – 1 ½ hr time commitment. Weddings are scheduled on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. Commitments throughout the year vary. If you would like to join this joyous ministry, please contact Ursula at 909-797-2533 ext 225.
