th November ~ NO ASSEMBLY

Monday 7th December ~ Farewell Jerry Assembly

Monday 14th December ~ Father Malcolm Assembly

All parents are warmly welcomed to attend our weekly assemblies.

Assembly every Monday at 2:40pm. Please arrive on time to avoid disappointment.

This weekend we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, which also brings our church year to a close. In light of the tragic events which have rocked our world over the last few weeks, it is an opportune time to reflect on the ‘Kingship’ of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived in a world that was full of violence and hatred – in secular and religious beliefs. The ‘Kingship’ of the day were the Roman rulers – Caesar, Pilate etc., while the Jews were also ruled by the Pharisees, Sadducees etc. most of the people of the time believed that the ONLY way to ‘freedom’ was through the power and might of war/violence. Jesus on the other hand, disagreed and promoted his Father’s will for humanity to live together in a realm of non-violence. Perhaps this weekend as we celebrate this feast of Christ the King, we too can think about how we can respond and re-act to our own world and the violence that reigns …..

MRS TAMMESILD’S FAREWELL MASS: Mrs. Catherine Tammesild is leaving St Finbar’s after 16 years of dedicated service, both as a teacher and as Deputy Principal to take on an exciting new challenge as Principal of St Paul’s in Bentleigh. We would like to farewell Catherine and thank her for all she has contributed to St Finbar’s over the years. You are invited to attend a mass in her honour on Wednesday 9 December at 9.00 am in the church. This will be followed by a whole school assembly in the hall at approximately 10.00 am. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS ~ Mrs. June Kellar

HOMEWORK TERM 4 Written homework in all grades has now finished for the school year. Reading each night and Maths Mate are still expected to be completed. This year’s Christmas project is to make a Christmas wreath, one per family. Wreaths are a traditional symbol of Christmas and can be made out of a variety of simple materials including wire coat hangers or twigs. The children can then make decorations to hang off the wreath. The wreaths can be brought to school on Monday 30

th November to be hung around the corridors

of the school and the Church as the excitement builds in the lead up to the end of the school year as part of our preparation for Advent. Last year there was a wonderful sense of community as children and their families arrived at school to the tune of Christmas carols being played over the loud speakers. Remember? It was lots of fun! Please keep the wreaths to the traditional size for practical reasons and ease of transportation. Classroom teachers will inform you via email when written homework ends and ‘Project Christmas Wreaths’ begins. Nightly reading is the only component that remains as well as Maths Mate for some classes until the end of Term. I hope families see this as a fun project to engage in together this Term. CAROLS EVENING: One of the very special events in Term 4 is our Carol’s evening on Wednesday 2

nd December at 6.30pm. Over the years we have

tried many different venues to cater for the large numbers of parents and friends who attend this wonderful Christmas celebration, but we keep coming back to our beautiful church where there is an atmosphere of joy and wonder as the Christmas story unfolds. This year we would like to offer a ‘matinee’ performance to ease the large numbers that will be attending in the evening. We are hoping that grandparents and special visitors will be able to join us at 10am on Wednesday 2

nd December.

22 November 2015 Christ the King – developing history God was reluctant to give the Jewish people a king – he was aware of possible power abuses – but finally heeded their requests and among those anointed were Saul, David and Solomon. At the end of the 19th Century the church authorities wanted to highlight Jesus’ response to Pilate at his trial “Yes, I am a king, but not of this world”, and prepared to institute today’s feast – seeking parallels to the European

Monarchies. In 1925 the feast was instituted (at the end of October) and for many of us we received our first Communion that day. The 1st World War drastically altered European history, and very few Monarchies remained. By the Vatican Council in 1962, the word king only had a historical meaning, so the Bishops decided to reinstitute the day in late November, and emphasise Christ’s Kingly role as a merciful judge, who we each meet at our life’s end.

Lord, we are so fortunate to have You as our judge – you are already our redeemer, and provided we have love in our heart and pray to You for forgiveness, You will overlook all our other transgressions. Fr Malcolm Crawford
