THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD MAY 16, 2010 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,

the beginning and the end.” — Revelation 22:13

Ascension Forty Days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Acts of the Apostles, chapter one, records Jesus' ascension into heaven. It is also narrated in Mark 16:19, and Luke 24:51. Jesus himself spoke about his ascension. Thus, in John 6:63, Christ asks the Jews: "If then you shall see the son of Man ascend up where He was before?" and 20:17, He says to Mary Magdalene: "Do not touch Me, for I am not yet ascended to My Father, but go to My brethren, and say to them: I ascend to My Father and to your Father, to My God and to your God." Again, in Ephesians 4:8-10, and in Timothy 3:16, the Ascension of Christ is spoken of as an accepted fact. The ascension is an important Christian feast attesting and celebrating the reality of the God-Man Jesus Christ's returning to the Father, to return again in the future parousia (second coming). The Ascension is the final component of the paschal mystery, which consists also of Jesus' Passion, Crucifixion, Death, Burial, De-scent Among the Dead, and Resurrection. Along with the resurrection, the ascension functioned as a proof of Jesus' claim that He was the Messiah. The Ascension is also the event whereby humanity was taken into heaven. Finally, the ascension was also the "final blow" so-to-speak against Satan's power, and thus the lion (Jesus) conquering the dragon (Satan) is a symbol of the ascension. Early Christian art and iconography por-trayed the ascension frequently, showing its importance to the early Church. The Catholic Catechism summarizes three important theological aspects (with which most Christian churches agree) of the Ascension concisely: Christ's Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain, whence He will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the meantime hides Him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3). Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of His Body, may live in the hope of one day being with Him forever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit (665-667). Ascension of Jesus is a certain guarantee that one day we too shall be with God in heaven just as Jesus the God-Man is at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. Fr. Augustine

STEWARDSHIP Last Sunday, May 9, our Stewardship of $555.45 went to St. Mary’s Center. This Sunday, May 16, our Stewardship will go to the St. Vincent DePaul chapter of our parish..

Please join us next Tues-day, May 18th, at 9:30 A.M. in the church for our annual May crowning. This is a

wonderful devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary. After the ceremonial crowning of Mary, students from fourth through eighth grade will lead the school in a living rosary. We hope to see you there.

Next Sunday, May 23, is PENTECOST SUNDAY. Since the Liurgical color for Pentecost is RED, everyone is urged to wear RED to Mass that day.!

On the day of Pentecost, the disciples and other women, including Mary the mother of Jesus were gathered together in an upper room. The Holy Spirit ap-peared to them in tongues of fire and rested upon each one of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages as the Holy Spirit enabled them to proclaim. It was to every one’s surprise that they spoke in different languages and were understood by all. To relive the same Pentecost Spirit, St. Felicitas Church invites parishioners of all nationalities to participate in the prayers of the faithful at the Mass of Pen-tecost which will be celebrated on May 22nd and 23rd. If you feel inspired to be a part of this Liturgy, please contact Sr. Mary Anh Cong at the Parish Office (510) 351-5244 - ext. 282 before May 18.

Congratulations! To our First Communicants

The Sacrament of Eucharist is one of the sacra-ments of Christian initiation. “Those who have been raised to the dignity of the most royal priest-hood by Baptism and configured more deeply to Christ by confirmation, participate with the whole community in the Lord’s own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1322)

The Eucharist is the ritual, sacramental ac-tion of giving thanks and praise to the Father. It is the sacrificial memorial of Christ and his body, the church, and is the continuing presence of Christ in his Word and in his Spirit. (National Directory for Catechesis, #36, A3)

We would like to congratulate these chil-dren of our parish community who received Holy Communion for the first time during the celebration of the Eucharist on May 8th; it was a most memo-rable experience for the children and their fami-lies.~ We pray that they continue to come to the table of the Lord to be fed with the Bread of Life. ~ ~ Sandi

We Celebrate the Spirit’s Gifts ~wisdom ~understanding ~right judgment ~courage ~knowledge ~reverence ~wonder and awe Next week May 23, Christians will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost. We call Pentecost the birthday of the Church. On this day, the as-cended Jesus sent the promised “Counselor” by pouring the Holy Spirit on his disciples (John 16:7). Red, the liturgical color for Pentecost, reminds us of the offering of lives of Christian martyrs gone before us in the service of our Lord.

Don’t forget to wear red on Pentecost.

On the surface, this ministry may appear only to be providing entertainment for the sick, but on the deeper level, it is so much more. We reach out and touch their hearts and heal their wounds by our lov-ing care. We cheer them up as Jesus did during His ministry on earth. Our presence and recognition of the sick is more important than voices to sing. Who: Everyone is welcome to join this Ministry. What: We present sing-along songs. Where: At Sunbridge & Redwood Convales-cent Home When: 2nd Wednesday monthly - 9:30 - 11:30 am If you are interested in becoming a part of this Min-istry, we welcome you.
