ENROLLMENTUPDATE

St. Edward’s University enrollmentreached an all-time high of 4,151 total stu-dents last fall, representing an 8.5 percentincrease over the fall of 2000.

Total enrollment for first-time freshmenwas 417, the largest freshman class reported.The number of traditional undergraduates alsoincreased for the third year in a row to 2,315.

Total graduate enrollment continues toincrease every year. There are currently 782students enrolled. The number of MBA stu-dents has been steadily increasing since thefall of 1997, and enrollment is now 570.

The number of international studentsreached 122, the highest the enrollment hasbeen since the fall of 1997. A total of 34.4percent of all St. Edward’s University studentsare classified as minorities (American Indian,Asian and Pacific Islander, Hispanic andAfrican American).

A ‘CAN-DO’ AFFAIROn Nov. 8, St. Edward’s University

hosted the official groundbreaking for the new60,000-square-foot residence hall in conjunc-tion with “The Big Can Do.”

For months before the event, teams ofresidents from the existing residence halls andapartments, faculty and staff competed to col-lect the most cans and prepackaged fooditems as part of a contest to create the coolestcanned creation. Fiesta Mart gave the teams abig boost by donating 1,600 cans. Teams hadfour hours to complete their food sculptures.The event also featured celebrity judges,including Judy Maggio of Austin’s KVUE TV 24,columnist John Kelso of the Austin American-Statesman and State Representative DawnnaDukes. Dave Dickson and Sandra Pachecoannounced winners at the groundbreaking.

Almost 3,500 pounds of food from theevent were donated to the Capital Area FoodBank’s Hometown Harvest Food and FundDrive, and the St. Edward’s University CampusMinistry Food Drive.

The groundbreaking event marked thebeginning of the $7.5 million residence hall,which will house 180 students when it opensin time for spring semester 2003.

STORYTELLINGEVENT HOSTEDOn Nov. 17, St. Edward’s University hosted

the 2001 Tellabration in the Maloney Room ofMain Building. Storytellers from all over Texasplayed to a standing-room-only crowd andentertained audiences with stories from history,personal recollections, Native American tradi-tions and ancient empires.

Tellabration began in Connecticut in 1988and occurs every year in various cities through-out the world. This year, St. Edward’s Universitybecame one of approximately 300 worldwidesites to participate in the storytelling event.

Hosted by the Central Texas StorytellingGuild, which is a local organization consistingof 60 or more professional and amateur story-tellers, and sponsored by the St. Edward’sMaster of Liberal Arts program, the event wascoordinated by MLA student and AssistantSecretary to University Programs DavidThompson.

A TRADITION OF LIGHTSOver the last 23 years, St. Edward’s University and the Austin

community have gathered on the front lawn of Main Building for the Festivalof Lights. On Friday, Dec. 7, the tradition continued as participants gatheredto light candles and watch as Main Building was illuminated by thousands oftiny Christmas lights.

In addition to celebrating the season, participants also were on handto celebrate the diversity of the community. “The purpose of the Festival ofLights is to celebrate the diversity of St. Edward’s, Austin and the world,”said Father Rick Wilkinson, CSC, director of Campus Ministry. Theprayers and readings that were given during the celebration were selectedto focus on the diversity of the audience.

The lighting of Main Building, the participant candles and the luminar-ias along University Drive symbolized the many interpretations light has forreligions around the world. “For Christians, Christ is the light of the world,”said Father Rick. “But light is symbolic in many religions.”

AMY’S ICE CREAMFOUNDER SPEAKSAT WORKSHOP

Amy Miller, founder and owner of Amy’sIce Cream, was the featured speaker at theentrepreneurial workshop hosted by theSchool of Business on Jan. 15. The conferenceoffered attendees the chance to work withlocal business leaders to develop and imple-ment business plans of their own. Miller, whoowns several legendary ice cream stores inAustin, shared wisdom from her 18 years ofentrepreneurial experience and spoke aboutthe hardships and rewards involved in startinga new business.

“Being an entrepreneur doesn’t meanyou know business techniques,” Miller said.“It means you have a passion and you find ademand for your product.”

The School of Business hopes to encour-age future business leaders to follow inMiller’s footsteps as part of its new entrepre-neur certificate program. The program isdesigned to provide students with an opportu-nity to find out about entrepreneurship andthe steps involved in starting a business. Aspart of the program, students develop a com-prehensive feasibility plan along with a busi-ness plan template. The campus community celebrated the season with the 23rdAnnual Festival of Lights.

STUDENT RECEIVEDWALL STREET

JOURNAL HONOREdward Remaley, ’01, received the

coveted Wall Street Journal StudentAchievement Award last spring. St. Edward’sfaculty member Catherine MacDermottnominated Remaley for the award. Accordingto MacDermott, Remaley received the awarddue to his outstanding GPA and excellent lead-ership in the community.

“The award made me extremely proud,”said Remaley. “What meant the most to mewas that I was nominated by the faculty andstaff. It showed me that my efforts hadn’t goneunnoticed. St. Edward’s is a great place to getan education.”

Since 1948, the Wall Street Journal hashonored college and university students acrossthe country with the prestigious honor.Recipients of this award are nominated bytheir professors for exhibiting both scholasticand extracurricular excellence in business. Itis a reward for the long-term commitment andeffort necessary to excel in a very competitiveacademic setting.

Remaley’s honor represents the 30thyear to have a St. Edward’s student recognizedby the newspaper.

SEU HONORS■ St. Edward’s University was listed among the best

colleges and universities in the country in the sec-ond edition of Great Colleges for the Real World: GetIn. Get Out. Get a Job by Michael Viollt, president ofRobert Morris College in Chicago.

■ In July, the School of Education at St. Edward’sUniversity received a grant award from the U.S.Department of Education’s Preparing Tomorrow’sTeachers to Use Technology program. The grant willhelp fund the university’s Building Teams and Toolsfor Teachers program, a partnership programbetween St. Edward’s, Concordia University,University of the Incarnate Word, 15 area K-12schools and several non-profit organizations. Thepartnership program will create opportunities forteachers, student teachers and faculty to worktogether to infuse classroom curricula with technol-ogy and find ways to better prepare future teachersfor using technology. This project will also provide amodel for other colleges and university educationprograms.

■ The university’s new advertising campaign, Learn toThink, received the Best In Show Award for totaladvertising campaign in the 17th AnnualAdmissions Advertising Awards. The campaign alsoreceived gold awards for newspaper advertising andtelevision advertising series in this national compe-tition.

A VISIT FROM OITAOn Oct. 4, the St. Edward’s community

was treated to the drumming stylings ofTetshin Daiko. Hailing from Austin’s sistercity in Oita, Japan, Tetshin Daiko drummerstreated the audience to a performance ofspellbinding rhythmic patterns and strikingvisuals. Daiko employed a variety of small,medium and large drums and other percus-sion instruments to create a fusion of culture,pride and history. Tetshin Daiko means“Spirit of Iron Workers Drummers.” Thegroup has been entertaining audiences for 25years. The University Programming Board atSt. Edward’s and the Austin-Oita Sister CityCommittee sponsored Tetshin Daiko’s performance.

‘NATURALLAW’Assistant Professor of Philosophy Mark

Cherry coordinated “Natural Law:Foundational, Moral and Legal Considerations”on campus in November. The colloquium wasthe second in an annual series focused on acritical exploration of the nature, scope andjustification of the natural law, which is a moraltradition that seeks universal moral norms toguide human action and understandings of jus-tice available to all of humanity through reason.

Speakers at the event included: Robert B.Kruschwitz, director of the Center for ChristianEthics at Baylor University in Waco; DanielMcInerny, director of the Center for ThomisticStudies at the University of Saint Thomas inHouston; and Christopher Tollefsen of theUniversity of South Carolina Department ofPhilosophy in Columbia, South Carolina. Otherfaculty who assisted with the colloquiumincluded Professor of Philosophy WilliamZanardi, Instructor of Religious StudiesRichard Bautch and Director of the Center forEthics and Leadership Phillip Thompson.

At the end of last semester, some of thebiggest football fans on campus headed out tothe soccer fields behind the Ragsdale Centerevery Sunday afternoon for intramural flag

football. Organized by students,the intramural league gave stu-dents and faculty a fun opportu-nity to get dirty on the gridiron.

The intramural seasonbegan in late October. Students,faculty and staff were invited toform teams and join the league.Six co-ed teams were formed,and the intramural flag footballseason was underway. Theschedule consisted of a round-robin regular season format inpreparation for the playoffs.There was no limit to the num-ber of players per team; howev-

er, each team could only have eight players onthe field at a time, one of whom had to be awoman. Other than that, most of the rules oftackle football still applied. The most obviousdifference was the replacing of a tackle withthe pull of a flag.

For many of the players, it was the firstopportunity to play football on an organized

team, and they enjoyed the experience. “Flagfootball is a lot of fun and it brings the St. Edward’s community together,” said SeanTallungan, ’03. “It’s great to be able to playfootball every Sunday with my friends from theresidence halls.”

At season’s end, a single-eliminationplayoff tournament decided the 2001 intramu-ral flag football championship. The league wasvery competitive and some of the rivalries randeep. Entering the tournament in a three-waytie for first place, the Rowdy Hilltoppers wonthe tournament with two exciting victories,making them the back-to-back St. Edward’sUniversity Intramural Flag FootballChampions.

With encouraging fan support and grow-ing interest among the St. Edward’s communi-ty, intramural flag football will undoubtedly be a source of friendly competition on the St. Edward’s campus for a long time. “I thinkit’s great,” said Jose Maganda, ’04. “Maybenext year this will be even bigger.”

ST. EDWARD’S HELPS DEMYSTIFYTHE ‘TEENAGE BRAIN’

The teenage brain — a mystery of mod-ern science. Until now. The PBS show“Frontline” recently aired “Inside the TeenageBrain,” a program sponsored in the Austinarea by St. Edward’s University.

The show explored how new scientificfindings are revealing the motives behind ado-lescent behavior. Research shows the unpre-dictable behavior that has long been blamedon hormones could in fact be a result ofchanges within the brain. The consequencesof this discovery could change how societyviews teenagers.

In addition to the broadcast, St. Edward’sUniversity and KLRU, Austin’s public televisionstation, teamed up to co-host a related townhall meeting that aired on KLRU’s award-win-ning Austin at Issue public affairs series. The

roundtable discussion brought parents andteens together to look at what these findingswill mean for families with adolescents.

As a result of the discussion, many teach-ers, parents and teens gained a new under-standing of the teenage mind. An overwhelm-ing number of teens indicated that they wantedto spend more time with their parents but didnot know how to ask for it. In response,“numerous parents reported that they weregoing to make a more concerted effort to beavailable to their teenage children and spendmore time with them,” said KLRU TV OutreachCoordinator Karen Quebe. And teachersreported that they were going to look for newways to incorporate these findings into thecurriculum.

SPORT SHORTSWhen talking about 2001 SEU athletics,

two names seem to be on the tips of everytongue. Erika Figueiredo, ’05, and CoreyWhite, ’02, had standout seasons for theHilltoppers, both receiving HeartlandConference Player-of-the-Year honors in theirrespected sports, volleyball and soccer.

Coach Debbie Williamson-Taylor,Heartland Conference Coach of the Year, ledthe Lady Hilltoppers volleyball team to a 30-7record and a Heartland ConferenceChampionship. Throughout the season, fresh-man Erika Figueiredo was a powerful leader onthe court.

Along with Heartland Conference Playerof the Year honors, Figueiredo was namedHeartland Conference Freshman of the Year.She was also the only player in the conferenceto receive “player-of-the-week” honors twice.Figueiredo led the Lady Hilltoppers in total kills(423) and kills per game (3.99). And sheranked second on the team in total blocks(79), blocks per game (.75) and digs pergame (3.77). By all indications, this brightyoung star will only improve over the next fewyears. Her potential seems unlimited.

While Figueiredo dominated the volleyballcourt, senior Corey White dominated the soc-cer field as a sweeper. As this year’s HeartlandConference Player of the Year and 2nd-teamNCAA all-region selection, he topped off an out-standing career. He was named to the All-Conference First Team in each of his four yearsat St. Edward’s and will undoubtedly be difficultto replace. “He’s simply our best player,” saidmen’s soccer Head Coach Mike Smith. “He’s asgood a sweeper as I’ve ever seen come out ofthis conference.” ■

MMNT UPDATEThe 2001-2002 season began with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, guest-directed by Michael

Costello. Faculty guest artists Annie Suite as the Nurse and Everett Lunning, Jr. as Capulet joineda cast of talented St. Edward’s University theater students to bring this tragic tale of star-crossedlovers to life.

Arthur Miller’s Playing for Time continued the season as a tribute to the courage and survivalof many women who escaped the gas chamber at Auschwitz by being chosen to participate in a prisoners’ orchestra. Playing for Time was directed by Melba Martinez and featured powerful performances by Equity Guest Artists Jill Parker-Jones, Babs George and Jenny Larson, ’01.

The season continues with spring productions of Once on this Island, by Lynn Ahrens, runningFeb. 20 through March 3. Short Stories, conceived and created with guest residents Anne Bogart andThe SITI Company, runs April 10 through 21. Kozmetsky honoredfor philanthropy

Trustee GregKozmetsky, ’70,understands themission of St.Edward’s University— and lives by it.Kozmetsky wasnamed OutstandingPhilanthropist ofthe Year by thegreater Austin chap-ter of the Association of FundraisingProfessionals for his service to St. Edward’sand the Austin community.

“I was very humbled by the awardand very proud to be a part of the univer-sity and the community,” said Kozmetsky.“I feel like I was really just a representativeof all the groups I work with in Austin,and I accepted the award for all of us.”

Kozmetsky joined the St. Edward’sBoard of Trustees in 1981, serving as chairin 1984 and 1994. He has helped guidethe university through many philanthropy“firsts,” including tripling the university’sendowment in the last capital campaign,completing the most successful fundrais-ing year on record for 2001 and creating aprofessorship in applied ethics to honorformer President Patricia Hayes.

“It’s the mission and the people thatkeep me coming back to the university,”said Kozmetsky. “St. Edward’s has helpedto confirm and even enhance my sense ofcommunity and of giving back. Our val-ues have really meshed.”

my semester hiatus started atthe exact time a major featurefilm opened their offices intown. Tom Copeland, the direc-tor of the film commission,made a phone call, and my lifewas turned upside down.

I landed a job as the officeproduction assistant on TheLife of David Gale, a death rowthriller to be shot in andaround the Austin area. I knewthat being a PA was going tobe hard work, and I had heard the hor-ror stories. What I didn’t expect wasthat by the time it was over, I wouldhave my own horror stories.

Working on a film with an approx-imate budget of $60 million, the direc-tor being Alan Parker (TheCommitments, Mississippi Burning,Fame, Evita, Angela’s Ashes) and majorstars such as Kevin Spacey, KateWinslet and Laura Linney is a ton ofwork — especially for a rookie. I had tolearn everything at once and hope thatI got it right the second time around.

I was basically in charge of makingsure that things ran smoothly. I did thegrocery shopping (about $800 a week).I did the office supply shopping (some-times making two to four trips to vari-ous supply stores a day). I ordered andpicked up lunch for 15 to 25 people aday. I ran random errands. I made cap-puccinos, cleaned the kitchen, took outthe trash, made deliveries on set, dis-

At the beginningof my junior year hereat St. Edward’s, Idecided that it wastime to get an internship. I had never had a clear ideaof what I wanted to do, so I went tothe Career Planning and ExperientialLearning office and started lookingthrough binders of internship opportu-nities. It seemed like I sifted through ahundred fliers, but there was only onethat caught my eye. It was for the TexasFilm Commission: “Learn about themakings of film and television produc-tions in Texas.” It sounded interesting,so I followed up.

The next spring I found myselfstarting my first internship at the filmcommission. I say it was my firstbecause, as a result of my experiencesthat spring, I ended up staying on dur-ing the summer semester as well. Thepeople at the film commission hadquickly become my mentors andfriends. They taught me the ins andouts of filming in Texas as well as pro-duction in general. I ate up everythingthey told me. It was as if I was attend-ing my own little film school.

Through a field trip with one ofmy bosses, I got my first taste of a realmovie set. I’ll never forget that moment.I stepped on the sound stage andinstantly knew that I had to be a part ofit. I wanted to pursue production work.

When summer started to winddown, I was also winding down a gruel-ing Capstone project. I felt burnt outand tired of school. I needed a break —badly. I decided to take a semester offfrom school in order to work. Luckily,

tributed memos, made copies, faxed,shipped, answered phones and talked tovendors everyday, all day. In addition, Iwas in charge of taking care of thescreening room, where the director,producers and editors, along with vari-ous department heads, would screendaily footage after wrap. This offeredme the unique opportunity to see thefilm footage before it was put together.During the 63 days that the film wasactually shooting, I was working six toseven day weeks, averaging between 10to 12 hours a day. Believe me — it wastiring, but worth it.

I’m still amazed by the people Ihad the opportunity to work with. Thedirector, producers, actors, editors andTeamsters were all amazing. I was ableto see a feature film being made fromthe beginning to the end. I madeincredible friends and contacts. Andjust think — it all started with a trip toCPEL. ■

Edward’s. While in Austin, he met withuniversity administrators to establish astudy abroad program for Ugandanpriests to earn their degrees at St.Edward’s. Tuition, books and livingexpenses are covered through combinedscholarship funds from St. Edward’s,the Congregation of Holy Cross andprivate donors. The three Sisters are thefirst nuns to participate in the program,which has graduated seven priests.

On one wall of the modest on-campus apartment the three nuns sharehangs a large map of Uganda. “Here,”said Gertrude, pointing to a spot nearthe lower left side of the map, “is FortPortal, our home.” The three nuns aremembers of the same order, theDaughters of Saint Therese of Lisieux,but they each hold different jobs withinthe diocese and community. Gertrude

y the time she was six years old,Gertrude Kabanyomozi knew what shewanted to be when she grew up. Likethe nuns from her order in Ugandawho would occasionally gather forlunch at her parents’ home after Mass,Gertrude wanted to dedicate her life toservice as a Catholic nun. Now, 30years later and nearly 9,000 miles awayfrom her East African home, SisterGertrude is learning new skills to betterserve her community as a student at St.Edward’s University.

Gertrude, along with fellow nunsFlorence and Stella, are the latest bene-ficiaries in a near 20-year relationshipbetween St. Edward’s University andthe diocese of Fort Portal, Uganda. In1984, the Bishop of Fort Portal wasinvited to speak at commencement andreceived an honorary degree at St.

holds an office manager-type positionat their order’s general office, whileSister Stella Kanyunyuzi works as anaccountant at a Catholic-sponsoredgovernment school for boys and SisterFlorence Kajoina teaches science at asimilar school for girls.

Inside the sparsely furnished apart-ment are the usual college supplies:stacks of books, notebooks and pensspilling over from the desk to the coffeetable and a small television in the cor-ner. There also are several Bibles and awell-worn English dictionary. “The lan-guage is the hardest part,” said Stella, a35-year-old New College student study-ing business administration. “Althoughwe are taught English from the time weare children, the dialect is quite differ-ent. It isn’t a real problem thoughbecause the classes are small enoughthat the professors know me and don’tmind helping me when I have questionsor problems.” Far away from home, theSisters also take comfort in the routinesof religious life. “We enjoy being able toattend daily Mass on campus and hav-ing the support and community of the

Congregation of Holy Cross,”she said. “And, we are gratefulto have each other.”

Florence, at 40 the oldestof the three, considers theopportunity to study at St.Edward’s a blessing. “When wecommitted to a religious life,we dedicated our lives to serv-ing others,” she said. “Here, weare learning how to do our jobsbetter, how to serve our community bet-ter. Once we return to Uganda, we canshare our new knowledge with others.”Florence is working toward a degree inbiology, though she hopes to learn otherskills as well. “I like sports and want tolearn how to play basketball before Ireturn home,” she said, laughing.

Sisters Stella, Florence andGertrude are not the only ones learningfrom their experience. With their paleblue suits and gray habits, the nunsinevitably spark curiosity among stu-dents, which usually leads to conversa-tions. “Many students ask us questionsabout our lives. They want to knowmore about religious life,” Stella said.

“Sometimes they ask us how to pray orif we will pray with them. It is a bless-ing to share with them.”

Without transportation of theirown, the Sisters depend on the buddingfriendships with other students, facultyand staff to help them explore Austinand Central Texas. “It is obviously verydifferent here,” Gertrude said. “Butthere are similarities.”

Though much of Uganda is con-sidered rural, Winston Churchilldubbed it “the pearl of Africa” for itslush, green land and numerous varietiesof native flowers, plants and animals.Because of its proximity to the equator,Uganda enjoys a moderate climate year-

round, with days evenly split betweenlight and dark. Despite the inherentbeauty, Fort Portal is not immune totrouble. Rebel soldiers from the nearbyCongo border are a constant threat tothe students at the schools where Stellaand Florence work. To protect the stu-dents from being kidnapped and forcedto join rebel forces, the Ugandan armymaintains a group of soldiers on theschool grounds.

Still, the Sisters miss their home-land, their fellow nuns, and friends.“We live simple lives,” Gertrude said.“We belong to everyone and are eagerto return home to continue to serveGod and our community.” ■

St. Edward’s University and AustinPolice Department now have two thingsin common: leadership and ethics.

Chief of Police Stanley L. Knee hascommitted to sending a number of topadministrators through the Master ofScience in Organizational Leadershipand Ethics program (MSOLE) on anannual basis. Michael C. McDonald,’95, assistant chief and chief of staff, isthe first participant and started classeslast fall.

McDonald is no stranger to St.Edward’s. He received his undergradu-ate degree in criminal justice throughNew College in 1995. In fact, twoother assistant chiefs and the assistantdirector for the police department alsoattended St. Edward’s University.

McDonald called his undergradu-ate experience very good and noted that“SEU has always been a giving institu-tion, very committed to public service,and very flexible for students who arealso professionals with time constraintsand multiple responsibilities.” Hepointed to this past summer as anexample, when a modified police acade-my was held on campus with officersliving in the dorms and attending class-es. “St. Edward’s stepped up to the plateand recognized they could assist us withthat.”

So it was natural that APD turnedto St. Edward’s when they began inves-tigating graduate programs to send theirofficers through.

“We looked at a number of differ-ent programs in public administrationand in criminal justice,” McDonaldsaid. “Most of them seemed repetitiveto skills officers learn on the job. Butleadership principles — learning how tomobilize a group and how to effectchange, applying ethical principles indecision-making — are not somethingnaturally learned on a job. The

MSOLE program serves our needs inmany ways.”

One way is financially. BecauseAPD is using grant monies that supportstaff development, they wanted to payan officer’s tuition for the entire pro-gram in one fell swoop. So St. Edward’scame up with a special pricing optionequivalent to the last two courses free atlocked-in tuition costs.

The Master of Science inOrganizational Leadership and Ethicsevolved partly as a result of the MBAprogram reorganization in the spring of1999. Allan Pevoto, associate professorof management, had his 1999 Capstoneclass conduct a survey of Austin busi-ness community leaders to ascertainwhether they saw a need for a programon organizational leadership and wouldsupport it. Not only did business lead-ers say yes, they encouraged a focus onethics as well.

The program was launched in thespring of 2001; currently 34 people areenrolled. The 36-hour curriculumincludes courses such as Leadership andTeam Development, Leadership andImagination, Organizational Ethics,Global Leadership Perspective and evena Leadership Capstone. MSOLE stu-dents attend two seven-week sessionsper trimester and gain competence inanalysis and action through discussions,group and individual work, case studiesand simulations.

“Students engage in experientialexercises that cause them to grapplewith the same issues a corporate leadergrapples with,” said Pevoto. “We havepeople from Motorola, from variousstate agencies, from nonprofit organiza-tions, even entrepreneurs enrolled in theprogram.” Pevoto believes the unique-ness of MSOLE lies in “the type of fac-ulty we have, our delivery methodologyand the passion that both students andfaculty have for the program.”

Marsha Kelliher, dean of theGraduate School of Management at St.Edward’s, noted that what sets this pro-gram apart is that “it’s so closely tied tothe mission of our university, andbecause of that, other institutions can-not deliver this program in the way wecan. This is yet another opportunity forSt. Edward’s to reach out and have apositive influence in our community.”

McDonald already sees how whathe’s learning in school will have a posi-tive influence in his work. “The expo-sure to the other participants is verybeneficial. In some ways, how we(APD) operate in the public sector isdifferent than the private sector.Learning how private sector leaders dealwith issues is something I can bringinto our department. Even this earlyon, I can see I’m going to get a lot outof the program.” ■

gen edfor gen ygraduate students complete the sixCultural Foundations courses as part oftheir general education curriculum, theset of non-major classes that studentsmust take to graduate. The CulturalFoundations classes are designed to fos-ter an understanding of the arts, societyand the world at large, “to create liter-ate, involved people,” said Kennedy,who coordinates the Appreciate the Artscomponent.

In Literature and HumanExperience, for example, students learnhow literature becomes a tool to conveya culture through sensory images. InBarbara Filippidis’ class, students readand write vignettes about life-shapingexperiences, from working on aCalifornia orange farm to walking afirst girlfriend to the corner dime storefor a piece of chocolate.

In The American Experience andAmerican Dilemmas courses, studentsdiscuss the diversity of American societyand how those differences affect theirlives. In Michael Farrall’s class, stu-dents play a modified version of theboard game Monopoly. The simulationquashes students’ “pre-conceived notions thatsocial problems nolonger exist for theirgeneration,” said Farrall.

“Take out a blank sheet of paper,”photography professor Bill Kennedysays as he turns to his students andsmiles. Eyes squint. Pens drop. Browsfurrow. One student exhales audibly,and another shifts uncomfortably.Kennedy’s class is not in for a pop quiz.He is about to teach them how lookingthrough a camera lens can change theirperspective on life.

“Write this down: The perfectexposure equals time multiplied byintensity,” he says. “This is the languageof photography, a language invented byhumans, just like musical notation andthe periodic table. If we can understandthese languages, then we can begin tosee patterns, to understand what we’reseeing — in a photograph, on a musicalscore, in a microscope, in our lives.”

And thus begins another day,another lesson in one of St. Edward’sUniversity’s Cultural Foundations class-es. But the Cultural Foundations classesare far from ordinary. In fact, they areon the cutting edge of higher educationcurriculum as universities seek to teachtheir students not only reading, writingand arithmetic but alsoreason, respect andresponsibility.

In Identity of the West andContemporary World Issues, studentsstudy the emergence of Western civi-lization and current events in countriesacross the world. In Lou Heenan’sclass, students look at the fifteen formerSoviet republics, discuss why shadowsof Marxism and Leninism still linger intheir new governments and talk aboutsocial and economic problems plaguingthe region.

The common thread in all theCultural Foundations classes, of course,is the idea that each person can pro-foundly impact the world, just as he orshe is inevitably impacted by it.

“The Cultural Foundations classesteach an understanding of how otherpeople live and what society as a wholehas gone through to get where we aretoday, an understanding of where wehave come from,” said Veronica Rink,’01. “My classes pushed me to writewell, to find things in the library and doresearch. I have learned how to get mypoint across, to be straight to the point,to answer the question athand. It was tough butreally good.”

And Rink’s peers echo her assess-ment — Cultural Foundations classesare demanding but worth it. “Morethan anything, the CulturalFoundations classes have taught mehow to organize, how to analyzeresearch material and figure out howvalid an argument really is, not to men-tion how to write,” said marketing stu-dent Lindsey Duncan, ’02. “What I’velearned from the Cultural Foundationsteachers, and many other teachers here,is very real-world, very relevant andwith a clear purpose.”

But it was not always that way. Inthe 1970s, a very free-form general edu-cation core reigned at St. Edward’sand at universities across the country.Students chose courses from a cafete-ria-style list, with most of the struc-tured education occurring in the stu-dents’ majors. “What we found outis that we couldn’t say much aboutwhat our students knew and coulddo,” said Marianne Hopper, dean ofthe School of Behavioral and SocialSciences and director of university pro-grams. “We couldn’t demonstrate thatour students could do the things thatour mission statement said they shouldbe able to do. We had to do somethingabout this.”

Throughout the 1980s, St. Edward’s administrators infusedstructure back into the general educa-tion curriculum and, in 1991, intro-duced the Cultural Foundations classes.With the help of the Ford Foundation

and the Associationof AmericanColleges andUniversities,

St. Edward’s began comparing its newprogram to those at peer institutionswith widely acclaimed general educa-tion programs. After only 18 months ofrevision, St. Edward’s began serving as amentor to institutions like central Texasneighbor Baylor University.

And the program continues tothrive. Hopper and her team present atconferences, workshops and trainingprograms across the continent fromTucson to New Brunswick. What keepsthe program fresh, said Hopper, is vigi-lant evaluation and revision. Facultymembers meet every spring to discussthe previous year’s classes and figure out

how to make them better.From such rigorous evaluation

come innovations like the Cluster class,a challenging mélange of three classes— Literature and Human Experience,The American Experience and a com-position and rhetoric class — in whichfour professors teach the same group of40 students. Students write personalessays, research papers and literaryanalyses that count for two, sometimesthree, of the classes in the Cluster.

mock town hallmeeting about slav-

ery. They come to

the meeting in character, having exten-sively researched the person they havechosen to play, from the president ofthe United States to an illiterate houseslave. The town hall meeting is “leadingedge and totally experiential, and therereally is no better way to learn,” saidFarrall.

Bianca Aguilar, ’04, calls theCluster the most challenging class she’sever taken. But also the most rewarding.“The class challenged me to do what Ididn’t think I could do: to write, rewriteand rewrite papers, to look at an issuefrom many sides,” said Aguilar. “I’velearned to think critically, to express

myself, to believe in myself. I think theCultural Foundations classes are thebest requirement at St. Edward’s. Theyflip your brain around. They opendoors, make you open to other cultures.You leave wanting to talk to other peo-ple and find out their stories.”

And that personal and socialawareness is what Cultural Foundationsis really about. It’s more than award-winning programs, top-notch facultyand innovative courses, though St.Edward’s most certainly has all of that.

It’s about the university’s verypurpose — preparing

tomorrow’s minds fortomorrow’s challenges. ■

What makes the South CongressMarket really unique are the dailyspecials. Undoubtedly, there is alwayssomething great at the sauté station.“My favorite is the Pacific Rim,” saidSara Gallagher, ’05. “I get it at leastevery Monday.” The Pacific Rim is astir fry of assorted vegetables, fruits andmeats spread over a bed of rice ornoodles, and topped off with eitherteriyaki, sweet and sour or Scheswansauce. Along with the sauté station, therecent additions of a gourmet grilledsandwich bar and a salad bar, nearlydouble the size of the one it replaces,have quickly become popular choices.

New additions and daily specialsare simply a result of brainstorming andthe willingness to take risks. In decidingon specials, Morgan and his staff holdbrainstorm sessions. These sessions arenothing more than a few people sittingdown and asking, “what do we want todo?” And as the university grows andthe number of students increases,Morgan and his staff will stretch theirimaginations in order to maintain thequality of food and service that the St.Edward’s community has becomeaccustomed to.

While the food is what originallyattracts the students to South CongressMarket, Morgan hopes the service willbring them back. “It’s very importantfor St. Edward’s to please the studentbody,” said Morgan. “There’s a lot ofplaces around where you can get a goodmeal, but we’ve got to have somethingthat the students will come back to.” ■

As you walk through the larger-than-life, propped-open doors, subtlewaves of chatter and a soft aroma greetyou. Friends smile and you’re invited tosit down. But for a moment you’redistracted by the seemingly endlesschoices. Long lists of possibilities hangon the walls near the stenciled animalillustrations. mind. He doesn’t condone terrorism,but he understands it. He isn’t sympa-thetic to the terrorists’ cause, but isempathetic to their motivations.

“It’s almost a curse to know toomuch [about terrorism],” said Louis.But his students wouldn’t have it anyother way. Each spring, Louis teaches aspecial topics course on terrorism.While the course’s assigned texts andvideo documentaries give students asolid knowledge base for terrorism, it’sLouis’ stories that really fuel class dis-cussion.

Student Erin Black, ’02, saidLouis’ class made her take a long, hardlook at terrorism. “The most importantthing to remember is that one man’sterrorist is another man’s freedom fight-er,” she explained. “Paul walked usthrough both sides of the issues we cov-ered. His outside experience gives him adifferent perspective on terrorism, andhe tries to help his students see that.”

“Paul teaches more than what’s inthe book,” agreed John Pickett, ’02.“He teaches what’s reality.” And Pickettshould know. A Marine currently train-

Next to the quotation istaped a flag of the Republic of Lebanon,two red horizontal bars bordering awhite middle bar and green cedar tree.The quotation, the preface from afavorite book, keeps the volatile worldin perspective for Louis, and the flagreminds him of his Lebanese heritage.

But the verse from the Koran andthe Lebanese flag tell much more aboutLouis. While quite meaningful person-ally, the two objects are also interna-tional icons from a troubled region thatLouis knows well. Intrigued with ter-rorism and a scholar of the subject formore than 25 years, he has developed athorough knowledge of terrorist groupsfrom the Middle East and across theglobe. He strongly objects to terroristviolence, but his research and experi-ence on the subject make him keenlyaware of the workings of the terrorist

ing for deployment to the Middle East,he signed up for Louis’ class not expect-ing to learn much more than he alreadyknew. “I had a lot more backgroundthan the other students because ofbeing in the Marines — terrorism andcounter-terrorism training, John Waynekind of stuff like what groups existed,how many members, who was on themilitary’s watch list and tactics forcounter-terrorism.”

What Pickett didn’t expect, howev-er, was to gain an understanding of whyterrorist groups act out and why somany turn to fundamentalism and vio-lence. “Going into a situation like theone I might be headed for, I’ll reallythink about why people are like this,what led them to do what they’re doingand why they respond the way theydo,” he said. “Not to justify theiractions, but to understand why peoplefelt like [terrorism] was their lastresort.”

And to personally involve studentslike Black and Pickett in his lecturesand classes is Louis’ top priority. Heknows that each class has its own dis-tinctive personality, and he is constantlyrevising his teaching strategies to reachhis students. “I am interested in theclassroom experience,” Louis said. “Myprimary role is to connect with stu-dents, whether inside the classroom orout. For me, it all goes back to the ideathat teaching is about telling a storyand painting a picture.”

Telling stories captivates students,as Louis learned early on in his teachingcareer. “I started pacing back and forth,lecturing, and turned to look at theclass as I finished up my prepared notes,” he said of his first classroomexperience. “The class just stared at me. I looked at my watch and only fifteen

minutes had gone by! I was sure that I’dprepared enough material for at leasttwo days of class. So I started tellingstories, a story about a terrorist groupin South America, why members joinedit, how it affected them. I talked until15 minutes after class ended. Andnobody moved [because] they were sointerested.”

Storytelling works well for Louisbecause it allows him to interact withhis students in a very personal way. Hisstories often spark emotional responsesand intellectual interest in students thata textbook chapter would not. Louisasks students to examine their reactionsand include their own perspective inwriting assignments. “I want them towrite with their own voice,” he said. Inshort, he wants them to tell their ownstories.

Sadly, though, making classes per-sonal through storytelling may come alittle too easily now that students haveexperienced terrorism on home soil.The events of Sept. 11 “changed the

complexion of everything,” said Louis,who spent much of that day analyzingthe attacks on Austin television.“Everything happening now is in myclass materials. Except now studentshave more experiences to draw on.They’ve felt it personally.”

And Marine John Pickett may feelLouis’ lessons most personally of all.“I’m supposed to graduate [from St.Edward’s] in May if I’m not deployed,”said Pickett. “Then I was going to go toOfficer Candidates School for theMarines over the summer. I asked Paulto come and pin my rank on me whenI finished. My dad will put one bar onmy collar, and Paul the other.”

Whether or not Pickett graduatesin time to attend OCS, the impact ofLouis’ guidance both in and out of theclassroom makes a powerful statementabout the kind of learning going oninside the walls of St. Edward’s. PerhapsLouis himself puts it most eloquently:“When I think about my job, I thinkabout my students.” — S.P. ■

explained Hill. “We have our own wayof going through life and are threatenedwhen we’re confronted with [a behav-ior] that we don’t think we do.”

Consider aviation pilots, withwhom Hill has worked extensively.According to research, pilots tend tobelieve that they are effective, efficientproblem solvers and decision makerswith both their aircraft and their crewmembers. When given a list of leader-ship styles to match to their own, anoverwhelming majority selects the stylethey intend to practice but not the onethat most accurately reflects theiractions.

Until Hill works with them, thatis. “Pilots have a wonderful technicalvocabulary but virtually no behavioralvocabulary,” she said. “They just don’tknow the words.” Once Hill leadspilots through an intense feedback ses-sion where their peers and other crewmembers evaluate their performance,their self-evaluation often shifts dramat-ically. They understand how others perceive them, how that affects theirjudgment and, in turn, how to commu-nicate with other crew members moreeffectively.

“If people learn to work togetherand can trust each other, they willbegin to trust the feedback they arebeing given,” said Hill.

And she applies the same conceptto her classroom. Hill coordinates the

“I, of course, thought I was driven,motivated, a perfectionist, efficient andenthusiastic,” said Hill, who is an assis-tant professor in the St. Edward’sGraduate School of Management. “Itwas an unbelievable revelation.” Theidea that being called a “pushy broad”could lead to a personal epiphany mayseem odd, but to Hill, it reaffirmed aconcept that she had built her life’swork around: emotional intelligence.

An invaluable skill, emotionalintelligence is easy to recognize but difficult to apply. The concept involvesbeing constantly aware of one’s ownemotions as well as the feelings of oth-ers, and then controlling personalresponses to make relationships moresuccessful. The catch, as human naturemight suggest, is recognizing when personal behavior needs to be modifiedin order to make a situation run moresmoothly.

“Our intentions are not alwaysreflected in our actions, and resolvingthe incongruence between intentionand action is not always easy,”

Capstone, the final course for studentspursuing their master’s degrees in busi-ness administration. In the MBACapstone, teams of students work onconsulting projects for local organiza-tions and companies. To prepare students, Hill introduces the concept of emotional intelligence, and theCapstone teams create and sign teamagreements that clearly outline thegroups’ expectations of their members.Each student also completes a self andgroup evaluation at the midpoint andend of the semester.

“The agreement and evaluation area way of structuring feedback for eachother, of highlighting areas for improve-ment and continuation,” explainedHill. “That feedback is extremelyimportant, in this course especially,where students are consulting and inter-acting with corporations, representingthe university and themselves.”

And they represent well. “Businessis all about the bottom line, the ‘hardsell,’” said former Capstone studentKelle Odom, ’99, MBA ’01. “There’snot much of a ‘soft sell,’ not enough ofthe emotional thinkers, the feelers,which is why emotional intelligence isimportant. Through the feedback fromDianne’s class, I realized that I have theskills I need, can easily apply them andhave confidence in myself.”

“Dianne is a remarkable womanwho has a sincere desire to help her

students achieve their personal best,”agreed Odom’s classmate and Capstoneteam member Ramona Rohrer, ’99,MBA ’01. “She is a dedicated teacherwho truly inspires her students. I’m afirm believer that if you put your mindto something and move forward withtenacity, you can accomplish anything,and she reinforced this belief.”

Students like Odom and Rohrerare gaining more than self-confidenceunder Hill’s tutelage. They’re gainingthe confidence of the Austin businesscommunity. Together with team mem-bers Bill Jones, MBA ’01, and RandallTobey, MBA ’01, Odom and Rohrerworked with the Greater AustinChamber of Commerce to redesign thechamber’s employee handbook last fall.The team spent many hours pouringover the old handbook and puttingtogether a final presentation for cham-ber president Mark Hazlewood and

volunteer finance chair EugeneSepulveda. Very impressed with theteam’s work, the chamber has signed on for future Capstone work and isinterested in an expanded partnershipwith St. Edward’s. “We couldn’t haveasked for a better outcome,” saidGraduate School of Management DeanMarsha Kelliher.

It is the successful partnershipsthat students form while they are inHill’s class — with their team members,the local company they work with andHill herself — that underscore the les-sons she teaches. “Emotional intelli-gence allows you to know what’s appro-priate in each setting and to betteranticipate the impact you’ll have,” Hillsummed up. “You can wrap everythingabout emotional intelligence into trust,respect and empathy.”

And that’s business sense even a“pushy broad” would endorse. — S.P. ■

Rainwater began her academiccareer at the University of Texas atAustin with dreams of becoming a scientist, possibly a biologist. But herlove for reading prompted her to takeliterature courses. With time, she decid-ed to become an English major, and afew years later, a scholar in her ownright. Rainwater went on earn herAmerican literature doctorate fromUniversity of Texas. Her fields ofexpertise include American literature as well as British and Native-American literature, a topic she explored in herfirst book, Dreams of Fiery Stars: TheTransformations of Native AmericanFiction. Her articles appear in suchpublications as American Literature and

Science, Encyclopedia of American

For Catherine Rainwater, a greatsociety would be one in which peoplecould be students forever.

Of course, she knows this is not areal possibility. But as you talk toRainwater, you come to understandwhy she would have such a wish forsociety. A scholar and professor, she hasenjoyed creating such a world for her-self, and she hopes to serve as an exam-ple to students who desire the same.

“Some of my student will reallywant to go for a scholarly life,” saidRainwater, professor of English at St. Edward’s University. “I think it isimportant for students to have anexample of what it’s like to go into aprofession academically rather than into

Literature and English Literature inTransition. She is the president of theEllen Glasgow Society, which seeks topromote keeping the Pulitzer prize winning author’s works in print, amongother endeavors.

“Sharing ideas about literature withother people is just about the best jobyou have,” she said. “I think literatureis instructive, just on a fundamentallevel, about what it means to be ahuman being. How do we face terriblesituations we find ourselves in? What isthe human condition? What are thecrises that we have in our developmentas individuals? As a collective? Whatdoes it means to be a decent humanbeing? What it means not to be? All ofthose questions are relevant to anyonewhether you are an accountant or aneurologist or a lit major.”

Even in the case of teaching non-majors, Rainwater says the importanceof a background in literature is critical to success. “You can go to a bookstoreand find authors like Oliver Sacks andRichard Seltzer whose writing isinformed by literature even though theymight be physicians or physicists,” shesaid. “The ones who really can commu-nicate something profound to the intelligent lay person are people with abreadth of knowledge who can talkabout philosophy, literature, art and science and understand that they arereally not completely different. There arereally basic and important connectionsbetween all the disciplines, and I try tohave my students see those connections.”

Many students describeRainwater’s courses as challenging. ForAmanda Balagia, ’01, former Englishwriting major and current MBA stu-dent, Rainwater’s class had a lastingeffect. “It changed the way I read,” she

said. “In her literary crit-icism class, she was sowonderful at teachingtheories of literature thatI found myself applyingthem all over the placethat semester. Doesn’thappen with every class.”

For Hunter Port,’01, now a law studentat the University ofHouston, the demandingnature of Rainwater’sclasses has helped him inways that stretch beyondhis major coursework.“When I first enrolled at St. Edward’sin the fall of 1997, I hoped only tostruggle through college and earn adegree,” he said. “I had been a fairlyunsuccessful student up to that point. I had not developed any real interest inschool and did not expect much out ofmy college career. Dr. Rainwater’s pas-sion for academic endeavors, her dedi-cation to the pursuit of knowledge andher encouragement of others to applythemselves has been a dramatic factorin my success. Without her help andinspiration, I know I would not haveachieved the level of success I havetoday.”

For Rainwater, her life as an educa-tor and her life as a scholar are not separate activities, but part of one largeventure.

“I can’t separate it,” she said. “Icould be a scholar without being ateacher, but I can’t imagine being ateacher without writing or at leastdoing a lot of reading and studying. Idon’t think there is validity to the argu-ment that you should be a teacherbefore a scholar. I don’t even knowwhat that means. What do you teach if

you aren’t actively engaged and alwayslearning about your discipline?”

And her example has inspired students.

“One of the main things that Igained from knowing Dr. Rainwater isthe influence of her scholarly life,” saidMary-Claire Little, ’01, a former lib-eral studies major and a currrent stu-dent in the Master of Liberal Arts pro-gram at St. Edward’s. “I’m applying todoctoral programs in philosophy —very much so on her encouragementand guidance. It’s been a significantinfluence… She changed my expecta-tions of education and she changed myapproach to questions and ideas. Shehelped me clarify what it means to bean authentically intelligent, committedperson.”

If there is one thing Rainwaterhopes students take away from herclasses, it’s not just a better understand-ing of literature. She hopes they alsogain a better understanding of them-selves. “One of my favorite students ofall time said to me once, ‘The real issueis what you expect of yourself, isn’t it?’

what it means to be spiritually “well” orspiritually “distressed,” particularly inthe context of everyday work activities.

“Spiritual wellness has to do withthe sense of meaningfulness, connected-ness and satisfaction you have in yourrelationships with others, with God orwhatever value might guide one’s lifeand with yourself in a given moment,”he said. “If individuals can link theirpassion with their work, the likelihoodthat they will exhibit these things isgreater.”

For those in the business world,the theories are a useful tool for humanresources. “Most businesses have pro-grams for other factors that are typicallyseen as contributors to employee well-ness: physical well-being, psychologicalwell-being, emotional well-being andsocial well-being,” he said. “A possibleoverreaction to the concept of separa-tion of church and state led workplacesto veer away from addressing the spiri-tual side of well-being. But now, manyorganizations have realized that bykeeping religion at bay, they have neg-lected the spiritual needs of employees.”

Judi Neal, director of theAssociation for Spirit at Work and cre-ator of the web sitewww.spiritatwork.com, said Trott ishighly respected in the academic com-

For nearly two years, David Trottcarried a small piece of paper in hispocket bearing the words of Pope JohnPaul II. Spoken in Rome in 1991, thequotation begins, “By means of hiswork man commits himself not onlyfor his sake, but also for the sake ofothers.” One might guess that a manwith such a quote in his pocket mightbe a spiritual person. But for Trott, thequote was more than a statement offaith. It was the inspiration for his doc-toral thesis in business.

While in graduate school, Trottwanted an original topic of study in therealm of business leadership, humanresources development and adult educa-tion. After some reflection and research,he realized that although the businessworld had historically addressed thephysical, mental and social needs ofemployees, it had woefully neglectedthe spiritual side of employees’ lives.

Today, Trott is an assistant profes-sor of organizational development at St.Edward’s University and one of a hand-ful of scholars addressing the relation-ship between an individual’s spirituality,or a person’s sense of journey or pur-pose, and his or her life’s work. Pullingfrom theories found in the nursing pro-fession and countless one-on-one inter-views, Trott has sought to further define

identify someone from their workplacewho is willing to talk about spirituality.By conducting an interview, transcribingit and analyzing it, they get a taste ofwhat qualitative research is all about. But,they also raise to the level of discussionwith another person the whole domainof spirit, spirituality, spiritual well-beingand spiritual distress. For some, it is thefirst time such a topic of discussion hasever been broached, especially against thebackdrop of their work.”

The effect, said Trott, is that thestudent, in listening to and respondingto questions, is having his or her ownsense of spiritual well-being and spiritu-al distress explored.

“I learned that we cannot separateourselves into fragments,” said KimmNickerson, ’05, of her New Collegeclass with Trott. “All aspects of our livesare with us all of the time. If you are aspiritual being, you cannot leave thataspect of yourself at the door when youare at work. By integrating our variousselves into a unified whole, we arehealthier physically, spiritually andmentally. So, I think the class made merealize that you can actually hurt your-self by being in the wrong profession.When you are on the right path, yourwork will be a joy.”

Trott hopes that kind of spiritualawareness serves students well.

“It’s an intentional goal that whenstudents leave my class, they have abroadened awareness of spirituality,” hesaid. “And, when they go in theirrespective professions, I would antici-pate that this might influence careerdecisions that they may make. Theywill be able to bring into the realm ofdecision-making a different dimensionthat may not have been there before.”— S.W. ■

munity for his work on spirituality inthe workplace. “To my knowledge, he isthe first person to do an empiricalstudy in our field, and his work hasinspired and informed many otherresearchers,” she said.

And it is research like Trott’s that isgetting the attention of businesses. Forinstance, Memorial Hermann Hospitalin Houston has incorporated a SpiritualLeadership Institute that helps health-care workers integrate the spiritual intotheir work. American Express offersprograms for their employees like“Grounding and Centering,” “Personal

Mastery/Finding Your Calling,” as wellas classes in yoga and meditation.

As for Trott’s calling, it is clearlythe classroom. He teaches courses bothin the New College and Master ofLiberal Arts programs and challengeshis students — who are mostly workingadults — to consider the impact ofspirituality on one’s work life. He alsoregularly engages entire classrooms ofstudents in the research process.

“The backbone of both courses,Spirituality and Work as well as TheSpirit of Life’s Work, is a field researchproject,” he said. “Students are asked to

Brother Larry Atkinson, CSC,career counselor for CPEL, saidstudents usually first seek out mentorsto help them make better decisionsabout declaring a major. “Let’s say astudent isn’t sure whether she should gointo, say, accounting or marketing,”said Atkinson. “In many ways, thatstudent needs more information thanyou can give her through academicplanning and advising. By giving thestudent names of potential mentors inthose two different fields, she can goout and find out what it’s like. Wethink this practice helps students makebetter decisions about majors, andultimately, their career choices.”

Being partnered with a mentorhelps them begin that process evenbefore graduation.”

Hollis Bone almost 10 years ago.Today, Bone is vice president forBusiness Banking for Wells Fargo Bank.“Because of Gary’s willingness to shareadvice and information with me, I waswell positioned for my post-graduatejob search,” Bone said. “It really had animpact on me, and I try to do the samefor other St. Edward’s students.”

Having watched Bone advance inhis career, Valdez says helping a studentfind his or her way can be rewarding.“The part you don’t always see is theimpact you are actually having on thatperson’s life. If that person goes on tobe a mentor, your influence spreads. So,mentoring may influence even morepeople than you might realize.” ■

Lynch to be remembered in biographyHe rescued many of our St. Edward’s trees from withering away. As a rec-tor, he even waited up nights until all the boys of the Holy Cross Hall dor-mitory were in the building.

Brother Daniel Lynch, CSC, touched the lives ofmany at St. Edward’s, including Brother Gerald Muller,CSC. Lynch’s endless contributions to the university haveinspired Muller to write Lynch’s biography under the work-ing title, “Lover of all Things Living.”

Lynch, professor of biology, joined the St. Edward’sUniversity faculty in 1954 and continued to teach at St.Edward’s until he retired in 1996. He died one year later.

“Brother Daniel Lynch did a lot for the community andis not recognized,” Muller said.

From observing plants in their natural environment tohelping prevent oak wilt on St. Edward’s trees, Lynch found ways to com-bine his passion for botany with service projects. While at St. Edward’s,Lynch was awarded the Brother Lucian Professorship Award from theCenter for Teaching Excellence. He also served as a mentor for over 50physicians who were former students.

“He was a personal friend, and I admired him,” Muller said. “He wasunassuming — a workaholic and a poet.”
